Game of the Year 2010 Poll [VOTE HERE]
Posts
It is. And it's awesome.
But I'm talking about the games that are 9.99 new, and have like college undergrad art on the front
But I guess everyone likes different things
It's not like I slobbered all over the game, though. It's my #20.
...for these:
1. Heroes of Newerth (PC)
2. Starcraft 2 (PC)
3. Mass Effect 2 (360,PC)
4. Scott Pilgrim vs The World (360*,PS3*)
5. Monday Night Combat (360*,PC)
6. Fallout: New Vegas (360,PC,PS3)
7. Bayonetta (360,PS3)
1 Minecraft (PC*)
2 Halo Reach (360)
3 Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (360,PC,PS3)
4 Robot Unicorn Attack (iPhone,Flash)
5 Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)
6 Just Cause 2 (360,PC,PS3)
7 Beat Hazard (360*,PC*,PS3*)
8 Just Dance 2 (Wii)
9 Poker Night at the Inventory (PC*)
10 Alien Swarm (PC*)
Realized afterwards that I forgot to missed Chime in there, though. Damn shame.
I almost put Robot Unicorn Attack at #1, but had to recognize some others first.
Thanks! You voted for:
1. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
2. Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)
3. Sonic Colors (Wii)
4. No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle (Wii)
5. NBA Jam 2010 (360,PS3,Wii)
6. Sonic 4 Episode 1 (360*,iPhone,PS3*,Wii*)
7. Goldeneye 007 (DS,Wii)
8. Red Dead Redemption (360,PS3)
And thus, from this small selection of games that I have listed I hereby declare 2010 to be The Year of the Platformer! I submit the following anecdotal evidence:
Also, I kinda cheated on a couple of the listed games in my top 8. I haven't actually had a chance to play No More Heroes 2 yet, but I loved the original and imagine that the sequel would have ended up being at least my fourth favorite game of the year. Red Dead Redemption I also haven't played, but I just think its fucking awesome that Rock Star made a open world Western game and if I did play it I would undoubtedly most likely would have loved it (I'm a fan of GTA too).
I expected Goldeneye 007 to be more of a contender for game of the year, but I didn't really get into it that much for some reason. I do recognize that it is a very well made game though and what I played when I rented it was fun and entertaining enough. NBA Jam is probably the single most underated game of the year among the bigger names because of the whole "lol, it looks like an XBLA title" thing and poor sales. However, goddamn that game is a blast to play.
It's basically what you would get if David Lynch presented his version of Shenmue.

The top 3 is set in stone, the rest is inter-changable.
I still need to play my copies of GOW3, Nier and Heavy Rain properly.

19. Rock Band 3 (360,PS3,Wii)
20. Toy Soldiers (360*)
DP is essentially one of the best Dreamcast games ever to be released in the last decade. It's certainly a solid enough game (surprisingly deep and fun to play), and the "last-gen" aesthetics give it a charm that I can't quite describe.
2. Bit.Trip.Runner (Wii*)
3. Ufouria (NES)
4. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (DS)
5. VVVVVV (PC*)
6. Robot Unicorn Attack (iPhone,Flash)
7. Limbo (360*)
8. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS)
9. Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth (DS)

He's running it until January 8th
Anyway, I put VVVVVV at the top of my list. Yes, above Mass Effect 2 and Bayonetta and so forth.
Out of curiosity, is that because you genuinely think its a better game or out of some misguided attempt to give an indie game recognition?
In my mind, I looked at the (short) list I had and asked myself, if I had failed to play one of these, which one would I have missed out on the most.
Bayonetta was excellent and extremely well polished, but let's face it, fundamentally it's not doing anything we haven't seen before in Devil May Cry. ME2 even more so (I mean, it's a sequel). Super Mario Galaxy 2, same story. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, and those other games were certainly enjoyable, but VVVVVV brought something to the table that I haven't seen in a long time.
I still prefer to rank games based on pure enjoyment, but your way is totally cool too.
My 3DTV is delivered on the 12th, thus I am wishing time away like there's no tomorrow.

1. Mass Effect 2 (360,PC)
2. Super Meat Boy (360*,PC*)
3. Bayonetta (360,PS3)
4. Resonance of Fate (360,PS3)
5. Final Fantasy 13 (360,PS3)
I'll probably be the only voter for that last one.
Dishonorable mentions:
Darksiders - After playing Bayonetta, the combat felt clunky as hell. I just could not get into it.
Red Dead Redemption - GTA without the cars or the fun. Good move, Rockstar. Well, I guess it was since people circlejerked all over it...
Heavy Rain - If you voted for this I shake my head at you so hard. A full-of-plot-holes, incoherent, terribly voiced, pretentious excuse for a "game". This is a terrible game, game reviewers are terrible people, and David Cage is a terrible person.
Steam | Live
I don't think it's fair to compare the combat engines of those two games, one is pure combat and the other is just one of many parts of platforming, dungeon crawling, exploration etc.
" Mass Effect 2. The state of the art in grand-scale, two-disc space operas, Mass Effect 2 picks up two years after the end of the first installment of its galactic-noir story line. With beefier combat added to the role-playing, it's the Avatar of video games — except it's better written. "

20. Joe Danger (PS3*)
Last year had a lot of games I liked, just nothing that really stood out from the crowd really, so it was a bit hard sorting the top 5.
Dishonourable Mentions:
1. Dante's Inferno - A cheap God of War replica from a bunch of people that really don't seem to understand its formula at all. The combat is weak, the level design poor, the camera angles are constantly terrible, the QTE button symbols take a second to even recognise and I think Dante may be the most unlikable douche I've seen in a game. Also, giant goat dick on the main boss. Who honestly thought that was a winning idea?!
2. Final Fantasy XIII - What a mess of a game.
3. Splinter Cell: Conviction - Took a series known for its strategy and stealth and turned it into a bad third person shooter.
4. Call of Duty: Black Ops / Medal of Honor - Both have their good points (in particular I like some of the settings in BLOPS and the more realistic tone in MoH) but both had stupid set pieces and storylines. Neither were even remotely as good as BC2.
5. Enslaved - I liked the characters but everything else? Meh. I've mentioned it a couple of times elsewhere but Ninja Theory's hard-on for long winded animations really hurts the gameplay.
1. Mass Effect 2 (360)
2. Red Dead Redemption (360)
3. Pinball FX2 (XBLA)
4. Halo: Reach (360)
5. Limbo (XBLA)
6. Darksiders (360)
7. Bayonetta (360)
8. Hydro Thunder Hurricane (XBLA)
9. Call of Duty: Black Ops (360)
I actually just bought Assassin's Creed 2 on the cheap and loved it, I'm sure Brotherhood would rank highly had I played it.
I'm starting to think that CoD might just not be fore me anymore; I just can't get into it like I did w/ CoD4.
Special Awards:
Best Game I Bought Super Cheap: The Darkness (360)...this was a great game for the price. There are pockets of great gameplay in there, but a tacked on hub world and some annoying mafioso voice acting held it back from being truly great. Mike Patton's voice work as the titular Darkness is outstanding though.
Biggest Wasted Opportunity: Game Room (360)...could be amazing, but a fairly lame game selection coupled with a poor interface is hugely dissappointing. I can imagine navigating my avatar through my arcade, walking up to some truly classic cabinets, and having a great time. Instead I have to scroll through endless Atari 2600/Intellivision console ports to get to Battlantis or Jackal.
All of your dishonorable mentions are in my top ten list
Don't shake your head at people that voted for Heavy Rain, it tried something new and in a way succeeded. I'll agree with your criticisms but despite the plot holes, the terrible acting and the rest of it's flaws I enjoyed it more than pretty much any other game this year. It got me emotionally interested, it was tense and it was damn fun.
It's also the ONLY game my wife has ever picked up a control pad and played, I've tried her with others (she loved watching Uncharted) but she's either struggled or it hasn't held her interest. For this and this alone I could hug David Cage and the rest of the Heavy Rain dev team.
Also RDR is pure fun, but then again I've always wanted to be a cowboy.

I think this overall was an offyear with 2011 being a big title year.
1. Bioshock 2 (360,PC,PS3)
2. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (360*,iPhone,PC*,PS3*)
3. Darksiders (360,PC,PS3)
4. God of War 3 (PS3)
5. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (360,PS3)
6. Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale (PC*)
7. 3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3)
Mass Effect 2 was my number one, however.

Uh, no, the instructions say to only pick games you liked. Any game that you vote for at any rank is getting kudos, in a sense. Putting a game at 6 instead of 2 means you liked it less, not that you didn't like it.
2. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
3. Halo Reach (360)
4. Darksiders (360,PC,PS3)
5. Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)
6. Bayonetta (360,PS3)
7. Metroid: Other M (Wii)
8. Heavy Rain (PS3)
9. Pac Man CE DX (360*,PS3*)
10. Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth (DS)
11. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction (360,iPhone,Mobile,PC)
12. Limbo (360*)
13. Sonic 4 Episode 1 (360*,iPhone,PS3*,Wii*)
14. Angry Birds (Android,iPhone,mobile)
Didn't play as many games as previosu years, I guess, even thoguh I have a few (KIrby, Nier, Dot game Heroes, and a few more) that I haven't even tried yet. And I caught up on a bunch of last year's games, since I'm playing Assassin's Creed 2 now so I can see what Brotherhood's all about.
