i'm baffled by people's dislike of being satisfied
if i were trying to break the world record in the hundred meters that would be one thing but
being INCREDIBLY DRIVEN when you're basically average and probably would never amount to much even with an enormous amount of effort doesn't sound enjoyable at all
I
hm
first of all, success is, in my opinion, much more a matter of practice and determination than being born somehow inherently not-"average"
second of all
who is to say that one wouldn't amount to much?
it seems weird to say "if you're already talented then I respect your determination, but if you're average then just give up now"
haven't you ever seen a high school football movie
I do agree that one shouldn't always be grasping after goals, but it isn't such a bad thing to see the potential for growth and accomplishment
that's admirable in the abstract but i would find the gradual plateau of progress toward whatever long-term target i was shooting for pretty disheartening especially when compared to folks capable of more, either through natural capacity of some form or a more devoted work ethic
e.g. i'm running a 5k on friday, and if i set a personal record that's cool, but a PR would still be slightly north of twenty minutes so in the grand scheme of things who gives a shit, which is why most likely i'll turn in a 24:00 and be satisfied
i exercise to keep my arteries supple rather than any notion that i would ever be a Totally Bitchin' Runner and i feel happier as a result
For some people the small things in life matter, because if you want to look at it from the 'grand scheme of things' then what really matters? Sure you could turn in that 24:00 and be satisfied, but for some people that might not make them happy knowing that they could've possibly turned in a better time.

Oh and Larlar said we can't have our own book club thread.
Talk about first world problems
I didn't say that. I said you can't have a book megathread and book club threads about specific books. Because that's dumb! Try to tell me that isn't dumb. You can't. It's impossible.
So go hold a secret reading meeting with everyone who doesn't own a television and decide which one you'd rather have, because I'm about as apathetic on this subject as the current understanding of human psychology allows.

Can we have a thread about how stupid it was for him to want both of those?

So, I want to have a happy, healthy family. This includes me owning a home, having kids with my wife, and being able to provide both emotionally and financially for them. There are quite a few roadblocks for me on this path that I am working on, but every single day I make a list of things that I can improve on.
One of my friends told me "If you wait until you are ready to have kids, you will never have kids", but I really want to make sure I don't bring a baby into this world until I am prepared to support another life.
Currently I live in an apartment with my fiance, and we are saving up to get married and have a home together. This isn't cheap in Los Angeles, for sure, but I'm going to make it happen.
your friend is dumb that's dumb don't just plop a kid out whenever

Yeah, for sure. Not ploppin' out babies hopefully. Still, I want a family, so I have things to work on.
So, I've noticed that if I take a goal that I want, and apply the action plan to another person, it seems to work out better. For instance, if I want to decrease my debt, I say "How would the guy in the cubicle next to me decrease his debt?" Then I follow that plan. It seems to work fairly well.

You yuppie. I'm just saying I bet the kids stitching my nikes in the Philippines would enjoy the discussion of our fears of comfort and stability.
I actually laughed pretty hard at that so I see what you were saying about funny.
and sure why not. The separate thread was to stave off the spoilers. Just have to bite the bullet on that one.
