The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Valve knows what they're doing, all you other backburner pyros just eat that shit up while valve giggles in delight at their newest masterful nerf of the backburner.
Airblast with the backburner is a waste of time and ammo, and makes you play in a way that isn't conducive to using the backburner to its full potential.
This is my stance. I am my own test subject. My first round sans airblat was top of the chart. I didn't have time for more tonight, but there will be more!!
PS: You're welcome in advance to all backburner(and regular) pyros that will still use airblast, as my play style will condition soldiers and demos in such a way as to make your silly play style easier.
I've been meaning to make a video of me running people over with degreaser+axetinguisher for awhile. This is more motivation. Plus airblasting scouts against props or into corners/ brushwork to catch them and axe them a question.
I know you see those rookies airblasting people up in the air for 10 seconds and go "see, air blasting isn't good at all!" but you aren't seeing how useful it is for maneuvering people to set them up for an axe. Yes my flamethrower does shit damage. I rely more on weapon switching combos and get more flare/ axe kills than anything. The airblast is the utility to set both of those up, defense to push them away/ around corners, reflect rockets and pipes back, and clear stickies away from trap spots.
Honestly I see your videos and it looks kind of boring to play to me. No weapon switching, no control over your enemy, literally just w+m1. I understand there is a lot of tactics to position yourself to get the sweet sweet butt crits, but I could do the same, get the drop on a class and kill them just as fast with a puff-axe combo.
You do have a knack for surviving though, I'll give you that. I tend to kamikaze myself into the juiciest targets and go all out.
edit: as for backburner airblasting, I understand that it is a huuuuge cost for you, but you have so see that you are not always in combat needing 100% of your ammo. And occasionally you might be next to a full ammo crate and a burning ally. Or say about to screw yourself on a pile of stickies and a quick airblast would be the difference between being alive to get more ammo or respawning. It's not like you only get that much ammo in a life and have to deal.
Not to mention that you will encounter people running TO you to get put out, with mere seconds left to live. "sorry bro I unbound M2."
If I am not currently engaged in combat and in need of my ammo I am on my way to combat and in need of my ammo. And my way to combat is different than that of the majority of classes, ideally.
And since my name is literally "No Airblast" allies'll catch on quick. Every item in the game puts out fire now. Deal w/ it.
Is the Direct Hit that bad? Why do I never see other soldiers with it?
It's not that the Direct hit is bad. It's that the majority of people who play soldier cannot aim. And rely on splash damage to kill targets. In the hands of a soldier who can properly aim and lead targets it's nightmare fuel. The flipside of that is that the thing can't do anything that the normal launcher couldn't anyway. Aside from the mini crit airborne targets. I thought they got rid of that though.
Welp, Heavies seem lame nowadays so I am basically just playing Scout or Medic. I don't think I will get any Medic gear but I wouldn't mind picking up some Scoot stuff. I made myself a jar of milk-like substance and will go on to make a fish on a stick eventually. I picked up that extra damage but no clip pistol and it seemed kind of lame. If it were more accurate, maybe.
Pyros do not need all 200 ammo at once, you can easily airblast twice without being affected at all. It's not much help for spamming projectile reflects but it's extremely useful for retreating from a fight that you're not going to win, particularly against Heavies. And against a Soldier, I generally let them fire once and point-blank reflect the second one, which by that time is pretty much a guaranteed kill.

Except for all those maps where you can't take 10 steps in any direction and find something.
Umm
I...
what maps are these? None of the default ones, certainly.
I know the original maps were good about health kits being everywhere, seems most of the maps that get picked that are newer though are pretty sparse, and they like to not put them next to ammo kits.
Also theres the fact there are 11 other people who may need that same exact health kit for some reason. So really, just do your part as a pyro and put out people who are on fire. Same as a sniper with jarate should lend a hand.

Also, the fish is a horrible waste unless you are going for the milkman set bonus. Which requires a hat.

Unfortunately, axetinguisher kills look stupid in replays.

So to be clear.
You are saying having an option of doing something.
With no downside what so ever for having said option.
Is worse than them just not giving you said option?
That's it we are done here.
You also play different with said option at your disposal. You play WORSE.
Kritzed Loch 'n Load Demo.
And by funny I mean "why did you kritz me!? :x"

Firing a rocket launcher takes a 1/4th of your ammo, that must be awful too right?
If you can't handle not clicking on a button when your playing w/e, but that doesn't make the gun awful.
I tell medics to never kritz me when I'm a demoman, Loch n load is not good for it.
Well, maybe on a good night I'd do ok.
I was the demo, toolbox
Actually that's two pyros.
Which could have done a total of 3172 damage to another class in that time!!
edit: I know you're all gung-ho about your set up and have been a long time, but you are really starting to sound paranoid about it.

*plays payload some more*
It'd happen less if he airblasted me awaaaaaaaay
Also the pain train is a shitty melee weapon of shitty awfulness.
Think its demo/soldier, +1 capture +10% bullet damage.
1. Switch to heavy and equip natascha.
2. Laugh at their feeble attempts to close the distance
3. Get killed by everything else.

"...only mights and maybes."
I can't aim with the thing so I never use it, but it can be an effective sentry sniping weapon.

@gamefacts - Totally and utterly true gaming facts on the regular!
Uhhh ... black box?
I cap like a boss and push the cart like a champ now. I love that thing.
Getting a Strange Pain Train was the best thing that has happened to me!

All you can see is the soldier igniting, and then he dies instantly?? It takes a couple replays to figure out what happened.
Maybe when Valve puts in slow motion for replays, or lets us use dingalings it'll be better.
