I wasn't necessary a big fan of Bioware's stuff on the Xbox (KoToR was decent, and JE was just...less decent), but this seems to be hitting me in my sweet spot of "must buy-ness.
Have they yet shown what the cover art is going to look like? I really hope they do some nice minimalistic artwork, and not just have a picture of Angsty McBroody slapped on it.
I hoped so too. Alas, the cover art is depressingly mediocre.
edit: I AM FAILURE.
Finally got that to work. My code-fu is weak today.
The screenshots look stellar, May 22 can't get here fast enough...!
Where did you get that date from? Did I miss something?
Xbox Australia accidentally put May 22nd on their site as the release date. They took it down and said it was a mistake, but it's a pretty plausible day for release.
I mean, hell, I loved both KotOR covers, but I think they worked because they were so stylised... This cover just doesn't feel like it suits the game, and it's not really stylised at all.
They are definetly going for a Star Wars vibe with that box art.
I like it. It could have been better but its still good. I think cause its a new IP and not Star Wars they would have had to get as much on the cover to get across what the game is about, eg guns, aliens, heroic humans etc.
IIRC the Normandy is supposedly the size of a 747 plane, or thereabouts. And the Citadel, the giant city you see in some of the earlier shots and the first x06 demo, is like manhattan island sized floating in space.
Nah, that's just Bioware refusing to give away details. There's supposed to be tons and tons of different types of guns and armour, like any RPG. We've already seen a couple different types of armour and a shotgun, assault rifle and a sniper rifle.
What I'm excited about is that you can choose whether to clean and repair your armour or not. You can look all shiny all the time, or slowly get more caked in mud and dirt and have scratches and gouges and stuff.
There's a nice 5-minute 720p trailer for Mass Effect on the Jade Empire DVD for the PC that just came out. Dunno if it's already been shown somewhere, though.

This game is totally going in my pants when I get it.

A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
It's worth pointing out that the guys in that top screenie are not the guys that come round and wipe civilisation out every 50,000 years - the guys in the screenshot are the Geth, who are another AI race.
They still really like to shoot you, though.
How do we know that the race of robots that wipe out civilization every 50,000 actually exists? What if there isn't a single race of machines? What if every 50,000 years, an organic race advances to the point where they create an artificial machine race that wipes everyone out, and that is the actual prophecy?
That would be really freaking cool and an intelligent move on the part of the writers. The Geth were created as a slave race that rebelled and are now hostile to everyone organic, which sounds like the start of something similar... Again, we'll see, I guess. But I don't think you'll see the Reavers (that's what they were referred to early in development in interviews and things) at all in the first game - the first game is about Saren, the rogue agent dude in my avatar, who from screenshots seems to have allied himself with the Geth.
Who wants to bet that the twist is, humans (or their ancestors) are somehow directly responsible for the whole machines-wipe-out-all-life thing? Forerunners anyone? What a tweest! But I jest...
Well, it's pretty plausible! Bioware have already said they won't answer whether Mass Effect is set in our universe for story reasons... (which was odd, because at the time I was convinced it was just humanity + a few thousand years)...

A lot like the Ebon Hawk from KOTOR.

It's way bigger than that; it's got a proper military crew and all. But it serves the same function as the Ebon Hawk.
Edit: Shit, let's give you a couple more awesome, very recent screenshots which didn't appear in the OP:
Saren:
And for the guys who like the alien ladies:
Superb.

Nope. It's a big, important prototype stealth ship in the human navy, it's not the kind of thing a dude gets to name on a whim...

I'm going to go for war torn myself.
Hugo McBadass doesn't go around in no shiny armour.
FUTURE MONOCLE
that doesn't even serve any purpose, it's just there because they can put lasers in eyes now.
What other reason do you need?
All this talk of eye beams just makes me want it more.
Picture it.
Mass Effect 2: Exactly the same game as before but with Darkseid.
Score!

Clearly this will be a huge plot point.
Omg could it be? This is actually a Sliders game!
I never asked for this!
It is our universe, Hitler built the robots.
