[ALL ASSIGNED] D&D Secret Santa 2012: Being Classy for Beginners and Experts Alike!

Father ChristmasFather Christmas Registered User regular
edited November 2012 in Debate and/or Discourse
Hello and welcome to Secret Santa, also known as Cryptic Christmas, Hidden Holidays or X-filed Xmas! It's coming up to that time of year where society paradoxically compells us to flex our "think of others" brain meats and our "buy stuff" brain meats. These brain meats can come into conflict if we don't exercise them properly. During the Arctic Civil War which ended in East and West Greenland, I used the chaos to escape from the cultural assimilation of this "Santa Claus" guy and I'm currently holed up in Northern Finland. I'm going to celebrate my freedom from giving you gifts by guiding you in exercising those brainmeats properly. Teach a man to gift and he'll be classy for the rest of his life!

So how do you sign up for my traditional gifting program? Post "!Sign Up" in this thread. Also think about adding some stuff you like as an idea for your eventual Santa. Or even what I am told is a "wheeshlisst" that one leaves in the Amazon. A curious ritual, I dunno how one can afford to travel to Brazil, but I'm not one to judge. This wreath pricks sometimes!

You'll have until November 7th 11th (Giving people extra time to sign up is an example of being classy) to sign up, where concerns like All Hallow's Eve and political obligations shall have subsided. Then I shall be asking you to PM me with the following details:

-Your real name and address
-Whether you can find it within your heart (or wallet) to post to those beyond the shores of your own lands
-Whether you wish to receive adult-themed gifts, also known as Ennesseffdoubleyou.
-Whether you wish to be on the reserve list for ungifted Santees (see below)

Ideally I'd like to have all the assignments sent to their Santas before the American tradition of Thanksgiving, which should give everyone thirty days to figure out how best to be classy to your fellow man before the agreed upon date of Christmas. Problems can happen however, and I shall not be disappointed in you if by Christmas Eve your gift has not reached its recipient, especially if you've explained this to your Santee and myself. I advise you all to use tracking numbers when you send them in case something goes wrong. If you have failed to send me notification of any actions you have taken by January 20th, I shall be in contact with the Moderators of these boards. They understand the importance of being classy, and frown upon those who ask for the responsibility and then shun it. Also, never display disappointment in what you receive. People are being classy and sending you gifts, and it is bad form to complain about what you receive and forget the reason behind the gift. In the event a Santee goes without gift, I will be asking someone on the reserve list to make it up to them, preferably by the end of February.

Remember, it's now what you give or get, but how classy you are in doing it. <3

I like Piña coladas and getting caught in the rain.

More relevantly I like boardgames (although never have a group big enough to play them), cooking, JRPGs and Strategy games(with my 360, 3DS or 3PC). Gin is good. Cooking things are great. I fucking love pokemon to my eternal shame (although I lack the new one) and JRPGs (like Disgaea and whatnot).

With books, I largely use my eReader. So that makes things a bit of a pain. But I do love fancy editions of books too. So it's not hopeless. Comics are an exception and I've only read a few (Watchmen, V for Vendetta, OotS: The Origin of PCs, that one with old Batman and a few random bits). RPG sourcebooks are also rad even if I'll most likely never play them.

I'm not really into the idea of geek/nerd culture, so clothes with slogans and meme-related stuff is kind of lost on me.

I can be classy abroad if needs be.

The Material Interests of the Northern Irish Forum-goer

NB: As I am a filthy Socialist European, if you are interested in purchasing things of an electronic bent, please keep regional compatability in mind. My computer can play Region 1 DVDs however.

    The :D
Electronic Gaming - I roll with a PS3, PSP and a PC. Highlights of my collection are the Assassins Creed, Uncharteds, inFamouses (inFamii?), GTAs, Gods of War and Final Fantasy. Growing up I missed a lot of the PC classics of the 90's, and some PS2 games as well, which my PS3 could play. Those recent HD Classic collections are pretty spiffy too. If my Santa wants to send me gifts by Steam or GOG.com, let Santa's Elf know and I'll relay my details. My Brother's job gives me access to all EA games, so I won't need them from other sources.
Comics - I'm interested in reading some of the more interesting one off stories, like Dark Knight Returns (which I have). I'm also interested in graphic novel series like Scott Pilgrim (which I also have). EXCEPTIONS: I'm not interested in reading Y: The Last Man or Walking Dead.
Classic Cartoons - In the interest of expanding my Godson's cultural experience, I have been collecting classic cartoons, i.e. Cartoons made prior to 1970. I currently have Disney Treasures, Looney Tunes Golden Collections and the Complete Droopy and Tom & Jerry, but there are others I'd like to assemble.

    The :)
"Art Of" Books - Know those books which are full of concept sketches and art for major movies and games? I like those, especially for recent animated films.
Other Books - Comedy mostly, especially satire and/or parody. If you have any interesting history books about the 1900-1950 period I won't say no. Don't be afraid to send something that is neither of these.
Webcomic Stuff - I read stuff like Nedroid, Hark! A Vagrant!, Bad Machinery and such. Books or non-clothing merchandise from such places are welcome.
TV Boxsets - Feel free to broaden my horizons. I have or am getting all Doctor Who and most classic British Comedy.
Soundtracks - Think a popular movie/game/TV show sounds awesome? You're free to send some of that my way.
Arts & Crafts - Skilled with a brush or pencil or tablet or knitting needle and want to give something original? I'm down with that.

    The :?
Clothes - I'm well stocked for non-nudity. EXCEPTION: Interesting Hats, although my head is rather big.
Model Kits - I don't have neither the time or skill to assemble them.
MMORPG subscriptions - I don't know how likely receiving this is, but I don't play any MMORPGs.

    The :D:D
These are the wild if-my-Santa-is-a-generous-millionaire type wishes, which I shall spoil for fear of appearing greedy.
    - An SD Card-ready Digital Camcorder, and appropriate SD Card.
    - An unlocked Samsung Galaxy S phone
    - A PS Vita and games

    The :D:D:D actual-millionaire-or-outright-has-divine-powers wishes
    -Pay off my mortgage
-Fund the installation of Photovoltaic Solar Panels on my roof
    -Peace on Earth
-Perpetual Energy becomes viable, widespread and cheap
-Alzheimers and other conditions that degenerate a person's mental condition are cured.

If these are hopelessly vague, I have a cheat sheet you can reference.

If I were able to steer someone getting gifts for me in a particular direction I would make them avoid getting DVDs (because I have a bunch), books (unless you want to plough through my Goodreads list to make sure I haven't already got it), graphic novels or comics (ditto) or green vegatables (because I don't really like most of them - except green beans, those are ok).

Unfortunately, that's pretty much all the stuff I really like, except maybe Lego (I only have a couple of modern Star Wars sets and some Avengers stuff, but I drool constantly over the new stuff) and boardgames (I have TI3, 7 Wonders, Rex, Alien Frontiers, Arkham Horror, Quarriors and Eclipse, and my buds I always play with have Android: Infiltration, Munchkin, BSG and Dominion). Classy and unusual movie posters also delight my cold heart. I am a size medium if you cannot be swayed from buying me a t-shirt. I like real ale. I am in my late thirties, and a guy. Those are super specific things to tell someone buying me a gift. Just get me whatever.

    EXCEPT:

I don't watch the animes or read manga, and find figurines and geeky nick-nacks to be pointless clutter. NSFW presents are funny for about two seconds, so don't bother. Music is always tricky when buying blind, so maybe not.

You may note that this wishlist includes a lot of Complete Series DVD collections. While it would be ideal for me to receive said complete editions, I have no illusions that my Satan is unlikely to be RICH AS FUCK, as thus able to provide such prodigious giftery. :]
    - I have an Xbox 360 and a Nintendo 3DS. I'll make sure to put a link in my sig for my backlog/game ownership list.
    - I really enjoy drinking beer and whisk(e)y. I'm more than happy to try a new beer and/or whisk(e)y if you have a signature brand that you enjoy.
    - I also brew my own beer. I strictly brew using extract kits; I don't have space for the necessary equipment you need for all-grain brewing.
    - I like interesting regional food. In Secret Santas past, I have received gifts of candy and other foodstuffs from different states/countries and I have loved all of it.
    - My wife and I had a baby girl in May; she will be 7-months-old in December. Last year, So It Goes sent us a very lovely wool hat for the kiddo, which we loved. Appropriate baby clothes and/or items are fine.

    :[
    - I don't get geek culture.
    - I don't read or watch the anime.
    - I don't need clothes.
    - I don't need trinkets or knickknacks for my house or desk at work.
    - NSFW.
    - DVDs and music.

Please let Father Christmas or an elf know if you're having a hard time finding a gift for me. I can put together an Amazon wishlist or put you in contact with my wife for help.

Hmm, let's see if I can throw a list together quick

    :D
    - Nerdy whatsits and doohickeys are totally cool by me, all sorts of electrical doodads and diy thingamjiggys
    - local food/drink/whatever
    - Weird cooking stuff is awesome, I've dabbled in some molecular gastronomy stuff and thought it was pretty interesting
    - I'm big into tea, so cool cups/teas/storage/etc. is appreciated. I've got a pretty dope electric kettle so that's about the only thing I can think of that wouldn't be useful
    - I've got a PS3 and a well-equipped PC for playin sweet vidjagames on, but I'm quite well stocked.
    - I love boardgames, although the same applies as above, I've got lots of them, but if you happen to have an obscure game that you just love, I'd definitely love to try it.

    D:

    - I'm not really into books or movies, I don't necessarily dislike them, just neither tend to really pop up as what I wanna do when I'm not busy.
    - NSFW

This list will probably get edited as I steal ideas from other people.

Wanted to go kind of a guideline if my SS didn't want to just use my wishlist.
    Things I love:
    Mics and Headphones
I host a podcast every weekend, and would KILL for a decent mic or headphones. I'd really like a USB condenser mic and\or a decent set of headphones, it would be so awesome to have some decent gear. Also I will mention you every weekend on my podcast (Or won't mention you at all. Your choice.

    Bags
It's really werid, but I have this strange obsession with bags. I have a chrome messenger bag I have used for several years, it's probably one of my favorite material possessions. So cool messenger bags, backpacks, Gadget Organizers are all mondo cool.
    Knives and Tools
Love me some knives and tools, don't really know why. Just feels good having something that you can fix stuff with. A few years back, Ady gave me a Leatherman Skeletool and it has saved my hide so many times. I also used to collect butterfly knives, but this doucher stole my collection when I was 19.
Anything unique or nice, or badass is most appreciated.

    Clothes
While I do like T-shirts, I typically wear button up shirts in the winter, so please be aware if you give me an awesome t-shirt, I probably won't wear it until Spring. With that out of the way, I like Hoodies, and anything lined with fleece, military style jackets, Scarves (Been wanting to pull the trigger on a Keffeyah for awhile, never have. Also really like the fourth doctors scarf), and Levi 501 & Shrink to fit Jeans in Indigo. Also could use a good belt, as I keep buying crappy ones and they fall apart. My shoe size is 11us and my waist is a 38. I wear a large in just about anything.

    Games
I Have a PS3, and only red dead redemption and LA Noire. I'm big into shooters (My favorite being CoD. I know, I know), and I also really enjoyed Deus Ex and the Uncharted Series. PSN is Jokrmein.

    Food
Candys, cookies, chocolates, I love to death. Got something else you want me to try? Send it on over! I'm not allergic to anything and my favorite kind of food is Thai. Please Mark the box if it contains food or drinks so I know to enjoy immediately.

    Beer
I have a serious love for beer. I'm big into Pale ales and IPA's, but I really love amber ales as well. List of my favorite beers under the spoiler. I also dig neat pint glasses.
    Sweetwater 4:20
    Sweetwater Blue
    Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
    Magic Hat #9
    Fat Tire
    New Belgium Ranger

My all time favorite is Three Phillosophers by Ommegang. It will be a holly jolly christmas if anyone got me a bottle of that.

    Tobacco stuff
I have a pipe, and would enjoy another one greatly. I also would love any special cigarettes or tobacco you might could find. I have a hookah, but haven't gotten to use it in ages.

    Things I'm not into

    Books, DVD's, Blurays

Please no physical media. I'm out of room already at my house!

    Socks and Underware
I dislike socks. Doubly so for underware!

    NSFW stuff
Please no marital aids or handcuffs.

    Will update accordingly.

    Yes

Stationery, cool paper craft things. I like to do origami. Origami books, neat origami paper, letterpressed cards, paper ornaments, do it.
Fashionable clothes or accessories. I prefer minimalist and classic designs. I don't wear a lot of jewelry but I do like simple, silver pieces. For sizing, in American Apparel Women's T I prefer a size L.
I live with three cats, simple toys for them may or may not please them, depending on their mood.
TV shows I am into: Game of Thrones, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Parks and Rec, Workaholics, Arrested Development, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
I like booze and food. I am especially interested in local stuff I can't get here. What's from your area? As far as beer, I'm not an IPA person, but like most other types of beer. I like gin.
Put a bird on it. Seriously I love bird imagery. Silhouettes. Owls. Seagulls.
Cute towels/napkins/table accessories. My kitchen hand towels are abominably boring.

Feel free to ignore the above as long as you avoid:

    No

No video games (I have too many).
No DVDs. I prefer not to have many so I buy the rare ones I do want.
No books or comics (I have too many) except origami books, of which I have none.
I am trying to reduce and avoid clutter, so I prefer things that have a purpose or can be consumed (i.e. candles, food).
    No NSFW.

I think I shall partake in it this year.

    As for a wishlist, that's hard :/

Anything really I guess. Always up for something new/old.

    Reading/Watching:
    Science fiction
    Fantasy
    Non-fiction
    Fiction

Lego. I love me some lego.

Computer games. Have many, can have more.

Always wanted something random from ThinkGeek.

    Not that big into sports.

    Move to New Zealand
It’s not a very important country most of the time

I've been participating in these for the last half decade or so, and this year shall be no exception!

Things I love, in no particular order:

-Video Games (not that my Steam backlog needs to get any bigger). Games I've put untold hours into include everything by Valve, the Mass Effect series, untold others.
-Malifaux (table top miniatures game, though I have almost all everything in my chosen faction) and the associated Terraclips terrain stuff.
-Lego (especially sci-fi, castle and fantasy/horror/super hero stuff).
-Books (huge fan of World War Z, The Dresden Files (of which I have them all), Douglas Adams and graphic novels, to give you a baseline idea).
-TV shows I enjoy: The Daily Show, Colbert Report, Suits, Burn Notice, Fringe, Big Bang Theory, etc.

Not that I'm asking for anything from this list in particular, just wanted to give people a sense of thing sorts of stuff I enjoy. Self-pigeon holing, as it were.

An Amazon wishlist is available if you could use a hand!

And if I don't do this now, I will never get around to it. I am an adult living on my own, NSFW stuff is ok.

    Yes please:
Clothing items that are not too embarrassing and relate to a thing I like based on posting history or even just something that looks cool and is available only where you live. (XL, L if it runs long)

Crazy foods, local delicacies, candy, non-beer booze

Your favorite scifi series. Love scifi, have not read much of it. I got the Hyperion Cantos and The Book of the New Sun last year and read the hell out of them. I have read Arthur C Clarke, Douglas Adams, and Neal Stephenson so skip over those.

Some kind of cool toy thing, maybe with magnets. Something to put on my desk.

Wall art that is not upskirt jailbait anime chicks with freakishly large eyes

    If you insist:
Donkey Kong themed stuff. I'm not, like, crazy into it but if there's something rad you've found

Board games, tabletop games that you like

    I couldn't possibly:
I know this is crazy but no video games please. My backlog is the biggest ever and I will likely never finish it

Figurine type stuff, dust collectors, moving box fillers

Wall art that is upskirt jailbait anime chicks with freakishly large eyes

    Donkey Kong on
Thousands of hot, local singles are waiting to play at bubbulon.com.
