    Intermission Base Report

We may have lost a man on that mission, but we gained enough elerium to build three EMP cannon. In short order all our Firestorms are equipped with the new guns.

    oHjJwoq.jpg

Shortly afterward the Overseer ship shows itself again... In the one continent where I don't actually have a Firestorm based. Ha fucking ha, XCOM.

    vSWwQCE.jpg

A few days later another small ship is detected over the USA again. We send out a Firestorm and with its new EMP cannon it dispatches the ship with ease.

    aVlSRaV.jpg

Sending the amateurs out again. I decided the reason things went wrong last time was due to a lack of explosives, so Sgt. Crawfish is going out in Sticks' place (may he rest in peace) to provide some kaboom.

Let me just take a look at your file... hmmm, interesting. Says here the med team replaced your eyes with... hmm, yes, cow's eyes. And from the look of it they were none too fresh, either.

Funniest part is your eyes weren't even injured. Sounds like one of Dr Vahlen's little experiments. She's such a scamp!

@Brovid Hasselsmof Damn Good Ground, please!

I want to be an Archangel Sniper when I grow up.

    Damn good ground.

    Damn good ground.

Heh. I know your kind, son. Made officer off your test scores. Got in as some limp dicked politician's pet project. You think of this like a science, like a damned career.

You don't love the smell of cordite. You don't know the taste of blood. You kill for God. For country. For whatever reason they shove in front of you, and you'll go home when this is all over smiling and telling your 2.5 children how proud daddy is that he did his part, and how sorry he is there wasn't another way.

Well, good for you. And I mean it. You keep the war out of your mind, out of your soul, never look at what you did, you'll probably be able to get back to regular life after.

But sometimes, that isn't enough. Sometimes, all the knowledge in the world won't save you. You need the beast. You need to take the horrible bit of lizard brain we've all got that tells you to kill or run, and teach it that kill is the only option.

You need to learn to love the war. To love killing near as much as you love breathing. To kill, not because of what you're told, but because deep down, something broke. Do that, and anything is a weapon.

Until then, all your pistol is good for is a quick way out when the Chryssalids come.

    Good luck.

One way or another, you'll need it.

    Intermission Base Report

So we're basically sitting around waiting for the Overseer ship to turn up again. We got a bit of elerium from that last mission, enough that I could research Archangel armour if I wanted to. But right now I'm not that eager for it. The amount of little bugs and glitches I've been getting I feel like flying troops is asking for trouble. Instead I make up some extra sets of Titan armour to hopefully make people a bit less killable.

Before we get another chance at the Overseer, the council contact the project with a special request to extract a VIP from a hot zone. It's Col. Madder's team up in the rotation. They seem to get all the council missions.

I'm sending Fearghaill out with the squad. She's been out on the last two missions, ended up in the medbay after both, got critically wounded and mind controlled, all without a single kill or earning a promotion. I figure this has to be her lucky day.

Flying troops are not uuuusually worth it, in my experience. They offer you a bit of a tactical advantage, but if you get an unexpected pack crawlin' up your bum, that flyer is monkey food. They get the same natural flying defense bonuses as any other flying unit, but, y'know, XCOM.

Most of the time my Archangel Snipers don't even leave the drop point.

With the exception of UFO raids, I can have them elevate for a clear line of sight across the map, then send other squad mates to scout targets.

Add in Headshot / In The Zone, and they can clean up at least two or three targets per round on average.

Yeah, like, that's just plain not true. Even with Squad Sight, there's a maximum range. You're going to have to move up at some point.

I dunno, the whole flying jazz in this game is kinda half-baked.

No distance limit. The only limit is LOS. Which, admitted, can get a bit wonky.

Keeping a sniper in position to play finger of God works pretty well come endgame, assuming the sniper in question is good. It's about the only good use of Archangel armor, unlike original game flying suits, which at least kept your grunts on the bounce.

Now, I'd say our mainstay should probably be ghost armor, once that's possible. Aliens don't have anything to counter it.

Eh, seems like kind of a waste, IMO.

Supports/Assaults get so much more mobility out of Ghost Armor, and a properly positioned Sniper isn't at risk of getting shot anyway, Archangel or no Archangel.

I was going to point out how this was factually incorrect, but then I remembered "Firaxis game" and it is all too possible that it's a bug.

I actually ended up breaking the game really, really bad during the final mission on my ironman impossible run.

You have no idea how annoying it was to do something 'for fun' only to have your entire team be locked in a room and risk ruining all your efforts in the game prior. I had to commit suicide to get around the bug, Thank God the mission allowed for restarts.

Basically, never mind control floaters or heavy floaters and never, never use their teleport ability anywhere in the level.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

Yea, my guess is you were getting screwed by how the engine determines LoS because it's definitely supposed to be unlimited range. It works insanely well on the overpass map and the long, narrow street map. It's a bit hit and miss on forest maps or any building maps though.
