The Secret World - Legends out 6/26/17

The Secret World (TSW) is an MMORPG created by Funcom (Age of Conan) which launched July 3rd, 2012. It is currently in a buy-to-play model (purchase the game itself, subscription is optional). Having a subscription does entitle you to certain perks and benefits but they are not necessary to enjoy the game, and unlike other models of this nature, not having a subscription doesn’t impose limitations on your account (such as a smaller inventory space).

So- just what is The Secret World?
TSW is set in the modern day, with the following premise: “Everything is true.” Things that we normally associate with urban legends or fairytales and scary stories are real, though the reality is usually darker and/or more twisted than the stories they inspired. Everything from vampires and werewolves to giant spiders and fairies live in our world, but they are not common knowledge.

You are what’s called a “bee” or a “Chosen of Gaia.” Events are unfolding which require the Earth Mother to initiate countermeasures, and turning you into a bee is one of them.

What does this mean for you? You get a crash course in handling anima- life energy- and channeling it through various foci into many different effects- from the ability to shoot elemental energy from your eyes to curving the bullet fired from your pistol so it hits five targets, and many more besides.

Neophyte bees are in demand, and upon creating your character you will be asked to choose one of the factions available. They are:

"They lost me at 'Harmony'. Harmony is terribly boring."- Mary Stuart
A whisper of a rumor of a shadow, this Asian group is the most secretive of societies. With no fixed territory or structure, the Dragon have dissolved and reformed throughout history. They believe that a closed, controlled society is a sick society. Only through collapse and rebuilding, the natural chaos of life, can the world be in harmony. Recently, they have taken root in a nameless district of Seoul, Korea. To an outsider, their strategies are incomprehensible. Fractal patterns, chaos theory, random numbers, unrelated events. The Dragon understand that there is no pattern, only acts of great change to be committed. From a whisper to an explosion, they divine that an incident here, a disappearance there, can change the course of everything; acupuncture applied to a paralyzed planet. In the order of the Dragon, you are given the entire cosmos in potential. They have practiced martial and mental arts attuned to the true harmony of the world. The most dangerous and unpredictable of magics bend to the wills of those who are dangerous and unpredictable. In the approaching dark times, things will never be the same again. You are in the Dragon's element.

"The Roman Empire II: Rome Harder."- Mary Stuart
The Illuminati may have ancient roots, but they remain forever young and hungry. In every growing empire they have played for it all. And they play for keeps. Stealing the Americas from under the Templars' noses, they grew with the United States to become a shadow superpower. Their corporate headquarters, the Labyrinth, is in an undisclosed location beneath Brooklyn, New York. Acting silently, unless the occasion calls for a gunshot, the Illuminati push for a New World Order. It will be empowering and ruthless. Failure is not an option. Complacency is worse than not an option. Their arsenal is the ambition of a new media startup, the rhetoric of a congressman and a mogul's business sense. Working hard, playing hard and fighting dirty. The Illuminati's golden agents enjoy power, money and glamour – but the real power they offer you goes beyond that. Information worked from every civilian, government and clandestine organization in the world. Advances in modern magics, in the 'New Magic', that the secret world has never seen. They can give you everything...and they can take it all away.

"The noble art of 'Gotta Catch 'em All'."- Mary Stuart
Proudly tracing their royal lineage back to Babylon, the Templars are the lions of the secret world. When they roar, everyone listens. Old Europe is theirs, and the Templars' marble hall dominates the old London borough of Ealdwic - historic capital of the secret world. It's not just a show of strength. Nothing is just for show with the Templars. At the forefront of the war against darkness, they decide for themselves what counts as darkness. Never backing down from a fight. Never forgetting a grudge. They have tradition to uphold. For thousands of years they have been single-minded in their mission to obliterate evil in all its forms. Where angels fear to tread, the Templars kick down doors. As a soldier of the Templars, you will benefit from their military might. They have hoarded vast occult libraries and the hard-won knowledge of battles throughout time. Their traditional magics, the old mysticism of sorcerers and priests, of life and death, are powerful still. And the loyalty between Templars may be old-fashioned, but it is absolute. You will not stand alone.

Faction plays a role in how your experience in TSW plays out. Each one has a different take on the goings-on, which you’ll see as you interact with your handlers and read mission debriefings. Note that you can create up to three characters (without paying for more character slots), so if you really want to experience the game from all three societies, you can.

Also note that faction does not limit what you can do and with whom, outside of PvP. A Dragon can walk around Ealdwic, London (Templar territory) and talk to people there, just as the Illuminati agent in Kingsmouth can group up with a Templar to tackle a mission or three. The only places that are off-limits are the faction headquarters.

As far as playing with friends goes, you can be of any faction. However, cabals (TSW’s equivalent of guilds) are faction-specific, so if you want to be in a cabal together, you must all be from the same faction.

What is the gameplay like?
Unlike many other MMO’s, TSW does away with the concept of “experience levels.” You still earn experience, but there is no such thing as a “level 50 player.”
Instead, as you gain experience, you earn Ability Points (AP) and Skill Points (SP).

AP is what you use to purchase your abilities from the Ability Wheel:
tsw_wheel2_1336762300.jpg

These represent the actual abilities you have learned during your adventure. The ring is divided into an inner and an outer section, and then divided like pie into three slices, each with three subslices:

The red “Ranged” section represents the (nonmagical) ranged weapons available to you: assault rifle, (dual) pistols, and shotgun.

The orange “Melee” section represents the close-combat weapons: blades (swords), hammers (which includes axes and polearms), and fist (claws).

The blue “Magic” section represents the three ranged magical types: elementalism, chaos, and blood.

SP is what you use to purchase skills from the skills menu:
jb2KIM2.png

This represents your, well, skill with each weapon. Each weapon has two skill lines: one for damage, one for their other role, which varies per weapon. In the image above, you can see that this player has put in one skill point in fist’s damage line, and two points in its healing line. Skill also determines the Quality Level (QL) of gear you can equip. The game uses whichever line you have more points in to determine this, plus one. So in this same example, this player can equip a fist weapon of up to QL3 (healing line is the one with more points, 2. 2+1 = 3). QL ranges from 0 to 10.5 (higher QL is better).

At the bottom are your lines for your talismans. Also unlike most MMO’s, TSW does not have “armor.” Instead, you have things like dice, rings, amulets- gear that does not show up on your character. The talismans house the vast majority of your actual statistics, and knowing what you need and when is part of the fun.

Finally, since gear does not equate to appearance, fashion tends to be a major part of TSW. You can obtain clothing from various sources: the in-game shops (biggest one being Pangaea, in London), the Item Store (AKA cash shop), or via achievements. There have also been other vendors added since launch that sell clothing.

Okay… What’s the gameplay like, outside of my character?
TSW uses missions (quests) that are either given to you by interacting with someone (or something) in the game. Sometimes you’ll even get them called in to your cell phone (modern day game, remember?). Upon completing a mission, you don’t need to return to the NPC/item that gave it to you- you just click the “Send Report” button that appears every time you complete one, and you can do this anywhere- even in a dungeon, right after defeating the final boss.

TSW has several mission types:
Story (icon is a film reel, on a blue background): These missions denote the ones that progress the “main” storyline of TSW.

Action (a running man wielding a weapon, on a brown background): These are your generic quests, such as “Kill ten zombies” or “Take these items, find a way to combine them, and use the finished product at this location.”

Investigation (a laptop computer, on a green background): These missions are more puzzle-like and require you to figure something out. Unlike other missions, which typically tell you exactly what you need to do and where (with a helpful marker on your map), Investigations give you some information to start, and that’s it. You’re on your own, but you do have the resources of the Internet at your disposal (TSW even has an in-game browser, default hotkey is “B”.)

Sabotage (AKA Stealth- a time bomb, on a yellow background): These missions require you to get from point A to point B, and/or retrieve some item, all without being spotted or caught. Some people complain about missions with mobs too difficult for them to fight; chances are, they’re doing one of these, and fighting is not the “right” way to approach these missions.

Side missions (a package/box, on a teal-ish background): These are smaller missions you ideally pick up while doing one of the other types. For example, an Action mission might require you to kill 20 zombies. A side mission may require you to take some zombie parts back to the NPC for research.

PvP missions (crossed swords, on a brown background): Only available in PvP arenas. Typically follow the Action mission template.

Dungeon missions (group of people, on a purple background): These indicate content meant for groups, such as the game’s eight main dungeons: Polaris, Hell Raised, The Darkness War, The Ankh, Hell Fallen, The Facility, Hell Eternal, and The Slaughterhouse.

In TSW, you can have the following active at the same time: one Story mission, one “main” mission (one Action, one Investigation, or one Sabotage), one Dungeon mission, and up to three Side missions. PvP missions count as “main” missions as well.

So, what’s the PA presence like in TSW?
Most of us are on the dimension named Arcadia. It is an RP server- consider yourselves warned.

However, you can roll on another dimension and still play with the PA crew. Most game functions (such as chatting) are cross-dimension, and you can group with anyone from any dimension (the game will temporarily move you to the party leader’s dimension). The only limitation is in PvP- if you’re not on Arcadia, you won’t be fighting alongside the PA folks (of the same faction).

Way back when TSW was still popular with PA, we had three(!) cabals set up, one for each faction. Sadly, our numbers have dwindled, and the cabals are defunct. However, because of the chat system, we are still able to connect with each other in-game.

In your chat window, type /chat join PA Wang and you will see a channel called [#PA] pop up. You can then type /chat list to see who’s online and in the channel. Feel free to say hi or ask questions!

    Issues
TSW’s equivalent of patches for new content, issues introduce a variety of updates, tweaks, changes, et cetera to the game. When you buy the game, you automatically receive the base game plus issues 1 through 4; from 5 on, you have to purchase them with Funcom Points.
    One: Unleashed
    header_issue_one-612x337.jpg
Among other things, added a mission involving Carter, an NPC in the Academy located in the Savage Coast.

    Two: Digging Deeper
    header_TSW_Issue_2-612x337.jpg
Introduced the barber shop and plastic surgeon (allowing you to change your character’s hair and appearance, respectively), as well as the first Auxiliary Weapon- the Rocket Launcher.

    Three: The Cat God
    header_tsw_issue3-612x337.jpg
The first holiday event, centered around Halloween.

    Four: Digging Deeper
    header_issue4-612x337.jpg
Added the second Aux Weapon, the Chainsaw.

Five: The Vanishing of Tyler Freeborn
    header_issue5_updatenotes-612x337.jpg
Who is Tyler Freeborn? Where did he vanish off to? What lies beyond the black fog surrounding Solomon Island? This issue helps answer some of that. Also added the third Aux Weapon, the Quantum Brace.

Six: The Last Train to Cairo
    header_issue6_e-612x337.jpg
Added the fourth Aux Weapon, the Whip. Strong Indiana Jones theme.

    Seven: A Dream to Kill
    header_issue7_notes-612x337.jpg
Added the fifth Aux Weapon, the Flamethrower. Very strong James Bond theme, and a focus on children.

    Eight: The Venetian Agenda
    header_issue8_update_notes-612x337.png
We finally meet the head of the Council of Venice, and are told to prepare for what’s coming next. Very small issue, but it does add Scenarios (think the X-Men’s Danger Room with objectives to complete) as well as the Augment system.

    Nine: The Black Signal
    ISSUE_9_COVER_600.jpg
This one has been anticipated for a long while, and for good reason. We are finally taken back to where it all began™: Tokyo. In this issue, we start in Kaidan, and are treated to how things are like in this quarantined area.

This issue also introduces the AEGIS system.

Ten: Nightmares in the Dream Palace
    ISSUE_10_COVER_insertt.jpg
Part 2 of going back to Tokyo, this issue adds a few more areas to Kaidan: the Orochi Tenements (you just know it’s going to be Filthy), the Docks, and the Dream Palace Love Hotel.

We are also given AEGIS shielding in this issue.

    Eleven: Reaping the Whirlwind
    ISSUE_11_COVER_insert.jpg
Part 3 of going back to Tokyo- with the focus on finally being able to access Orochi Tower. Which has so much lore in it. It's one big phallic symbol of lore.

Oh, and we finally have a concrete "reward" for those choices we made while going through the story. You know which ones. You should.

Twelve: To The Dark Tower Below
    Issue_12_insert.jpg
Currency update. Revamps of lairs and raids. New dungeon in Tokyo- the Manufactory, which is beneath the Orochi Tower. New Social/LFG window/tool. Daily/weekly achievement rewards.

    Updates
With the release of Issue 9, there has been a rather large changelog to our abilities. Rather than listing it all here, please visit this link for more info.

And shortly after Issue 10, there has been yet more changes to the game. This one is more of an overhaul, and is called the Enhanced Player Experience. Essentially, Funcom tried to streamline things for new players to have a better trek through the storyline. This necessitated a ton of changes, which you can see here.

    Events
No events as of this time.

    The Augment system
    TSW_Augment-Wheel.png
Introduced in Issue 8 (The Venetian Agenda), the Augment system is a glorified sink for all those Ability Points and pure materials you’ve been sitting on since finishing the main storyline up to this point.

It’s also a nice system that lets you customize your abilities even further.

Augments are items that drop as loot in Scenarios. You then need to combine them with items (typically, the augment itself, the basic augments of the right type, some pure materials, and an Augment Attuning Kit. This converts the augment into something you can consume, which unlocks the augment as something you can now use.

As shown in the image above, there are four types of augments:
Damage augments make your damage skills hit harder, crit more often, penetrate more, et cetera.

Support augments are a mix of things. Some trigger a damage bonus, others a healing one, or they can reduce cooldowns.

Survivabilty augments help you outlast enemies. You get additional HP, more evade, more block, that sort of thing.

Healing augments support your healing abilities. You heal more, your leeches drain more, your HoT’s tick for more…

Once an augment is unlocked, you slot them onto your abilities in the Ability Wheel menu (default keybind “N”). Note that you also have to unlock the ability to use the four augment types as if they were weapon skills, using Skill Points. As you fill in their skill bars (default keybind “K”), you also gain the ability to store more AP before you cannot gain any more. (Which is a good thing, because even tier 1 augments cost a lot of AP.) Without the augment system, you can store a max of 175 AP. With it, you can eventually store up to 525 AP. (Considering that our most expensive abilities only cost 50 AP, this should show you how much AP the Augment Wheel requires.)

The AEGIS System v1.0: Weapon Controllers
    TSW_Aegis_system.png
Issue 9 (The Black Signal) introduces the first part of the AEGIS system. For all intents and purposes, this system only affects things in Tokyo.

In very basic terms, the Filth in Tokyo has evolved to a point where they can now shield themselves. These shields must be destroyed before any actual damage can be done to them.

Mobs can have one (or more) of three shields:

Psychic (purple) shields, which can be recast.

Cybernetic (blue) shields, which regenerate over time (but if broken, takes a short while before coming back).

Demonic (red) shields, which do not return once broken.

There are a few ways to tell what type of shield protects your target:

    1. Their HP bars will be covered by a color, corresponding to the shield type.
    2.
    2. The type will also be spelled out next to their HP (as shown in the image above, where you see “275/275 DEMONIC”).
    3.
    3. Mobs with multiple shields will have dots to the right of their HP meter, with a color corresponding to the shield type. So for example, if you see a mob with a blue HP meter and a red dot to the right of it, it has a (primary) Psychic shield and a (secondary) Demonic shield beneath that. You have to break shields in order (so even if you have a Demonic controller on, you cannot bring down the Demonic shield until the Psychic one is destroyed).
You get AEGIS controllers that you can equip on either weapon slot. (See the upper-right portion of the image, and the icons beneath the words “WEAPON AEGIS.”) There is a system to swap them on the fly- even during combat, but switching puts a 4-second cooldown on all your abilities. (Note the upper-right part of the image, with the two icons hovering above the ability bar.) You need to match your controller(s) to the shield you're trying to break (so, Psychic vs Psychic). Until that shield breaks, you deal 0 damage to the mob's HP. You receive a set of controllers when you first arrive in Kaidan and you can earn more from other missions (notably the one called Tower Defense).

Right now, the controllers only convert a small percentage of your outgoing damage into the corresponding AEGIS type. (Which should be okay, since most shields don't have many "hit points.") But any abilities that require you to deal damage to the target won't proc if you're hitting a shield (such as leeching abilities). Other things that just require hits, or crits, etc., can and will still proc (like Advantage Me or Circulation).

When AEGIS-shielded mobs die, they leave (as part of their loot) data that your controllers absorb. This is tied into their upgrade system, so make sure you loot everything.

Also, we gained two new SP lines on our Skill Wheel: AEGIS Speed and Efficiency. Speed reduces the cooldown you experience when switching AEGIS controllers during combat, and Efficiency increases the amount of damage you convert to an AEGIS type. Both lines also increase the amount of SP you can store at a time, to a new maximum of 130 once completely filled in.

Upgrading controllers is done by having them collect data until they reach 100%. You then purchase a kit from the Orochi vendor (who stands near the Agartha portal in Ginpachi Park) to upgrade it. Upgraded controllers convert more of your damage to their AEGIS type. This also determines which QL Capacitors you can equip; Capacitors come in a variety of types, all having something to do with the AEGIS system.

The AEGIS System v2.0: Shield Controllers
Issue 10 brought us the next iteration of the AEGIS system. We can now generate our own shields. You need to complete the mission One for the AEGIS to receive a set.

The shield controllers go into the head slot of the AEGIS UI. Like mobs, we can generate three types of shields. Unlike mobs, our shields behave differently.

Our shields are only effective against the mobs introduced in Issue 10- which is to say, mobs beyond the containment wall. Mobs here deal AEGIS damage, plus normal damage to your HP. If you have an AEGIS shield, the damage they deal is reduced (and your shield is reduced/takes damage). If you don’t have an AEGIS shield, the damage the mob would normally deal to it is instead dealt directly to your HP, on top of the normal HP damage you’d receive.

Shield use is simple: Match your shield to the icon that appears to the left of the mob’s HP meter.

We gain a third line in our AEGIS skill menu: Shielding. This increases the amount of HP your AEGIS shields have. Note that this line does not increase the amount of SP you can store.

Upgrading shield controllers is exactly the same as upgrading weapon controllers. You can swap your shield controllers out by clicking the round icon next to your HP bar, but unlike weapon controllers, you cannot do this in combat.

    Chat Channels
You might find yourself having to type the /chat join PA Wang line every time you log into the game, and you might be wondering- there has to be an easier way!

    Well, there is!

Creating Auto Login for Custom Chat Channels

    1) Find your Secret World install directory, this is typically “C:\Program Files\Funcom\The Secret World”.
    2) If you do not already have a scripts directory, create one aka “Scripts”.
    3) Inside the “C:\Program Files\Funcom\The Secret World\Scripts” directory, create two new files: “auto_login” and “auto_teleport” with no extensions.
    4) Edit each file so that it contains the following line:

    /chat join PA Wang

    5) Rejoice!

This will automatically let you join the [#PA] channel when you log in, as well as keep you in it when you zone.

Here are some useful channels to know:

#PA: Our very own Penny Arcade channel.
#noobmares: Great channel to find other NM-ready players just starting out.
#event: Set up by community to be the catch-all channel for anything event-related.
#OOC: For those interested in the RP part of things, this is where many players chat Out Of Character to set up RP meetings and events.

    Builds

    -Build Guides

He no longer plays last I heard, but Yokai has an excellent site which includes a suggestion for what weapons/abilities to start off with for questing/progression. Note that this is a suggestion only and you are free to take whatever build you like into the game.

    Guide here.

    -Soloing/Questing

Chaos/fist Burst: Arguably one of the best Wolverine (aka, self-healing) decks out there, this deck is expensive but well worth the investment. Only real drawback (if you consider it such) is a lack of AOE; if you have Issue 7, the Flamethrower aux weapon will fill that nicely.

Nope. It's just the prep for the Halloween event (which goes live tomorrow) along with some updates/fixes.

This includes the "fix" to Deadly Aim and Breaching Shot, in that (like Short Fuse) they now have a 90-second debuff that prevents you from gaining their effects within that time frame.

I like the stories but damn I would have appreciated some more proof-reading.

There is a difference between you're and your, and between its and it's. Please learn it, guys.

Could be intentional, since technically these are all hand written by regular people in the game world.

I read somewhere that there is a hard mode for the Cat God dungeon- is this true?

Tried to summon him earlier, seems bugged. Have you guys tried it yet?

    I have a Happy jack-o-lantern.

EDIT: Got both versions and kills today, woo!

And @amnesiasoft is an awesome tank. Just saying. (Really. That was madness.)

Got some lame Smiling Gourds for my trouble. Meh. (Game's like LEECH HARDER!)

Anyone hunting Incognito? I wanna see if I can get the kill and pumpkin head from him...

Okay, got all the weapons, talis, glyphs, and blue signets for my healtank set in order. Now I just need to make it all .4.4. A test run in Polaris Elite with 2 undergeared DPS and a way overgeared DPS was fairly promising!

Oh, also, razor wire no longer works on NKL-107. So, uh, be mindful of that if it's how you usually finish Slaughterhouse.

    Awww.

if you can read this i hope you have a good day partner

I wanted other people to worry about holding aggro, and as a whole went in with about as much DPS as four QL10 blue people should be pulling.

Actually, I was mistaken. Razor wire just doesn't work, period.

According to the devs, it was slowing by 80% when it's meant to slow by 30%. The effect it has on some bosses like SH2 is intended, and they're not going to be changing that.

Yes, I know. But right now it literally doesn't work on ANYTHING. Zombies in Kingsmouth? Nope. NKL-107? Nope. Other players in PvP? Nope.

Yeah. I'm not sure how they fucked up the slowdown effect, the tooltip has always said 30%, and I'm not sure how they managed to make it 0% instead of 30% this time. Twice they've gotten it wrong and I'm not sure how it could possibly be that hard. Also I'm not sure how setting it to 0% got through any degree of testing.
