Looks like on 8/8 GameStop is having a special preorder event for a 3 pack of Duck Hunt, R.O.B., and Game & Watch (the three pack seems to be GS exclusive but not the individual figures).

Have to be there in person, 30 per store. "Early morning" -- this isn't midnight, is it?
I'm too old for this shit.
Why the crap did I ever make my original name "cloudeagle?"

Ugh, of course the three I most want out of the next wave. This hobby is frustrating at times.
That 3 pack is the prime example of Amiibos I don't NEED because I don't play as any of them in Smash, but I really want because having a figure of any one of those characters on a shelf is pretty awesome.
Snagged a dark pit this morning. Are the store exclusive ones rarer?
The only store exclusives that tend to be really rare are the ones that released earlier in the year...Meta Knight, Shulk, Lucario, Gold Mario, and to a lesser extent Rosalina are still rare, but Jigglypuff, Ness and Greninja seem to be a bit more common, though not ridiculously so.
If you're referring to Dark Pit, yes. The usual local Amiibros made up a signup sheet so you sign up, you're given a number, and you're good. I was able to get there around 8:15, get assigned #14, and then I went to grab an Egg McMuffin and came back around 8:45.
Currently undecided whether I want to keep him or pass him along to someone here.

I have been skipping the Icarus figures. I liked Uprising, but I wasn't worried about the Amiibo for them all.
The ones I probably most regret not being able to get at retail are Ike and Lucina, but that's just because I love those characters. At some point I'll probably be able to grab them, I just won't spent crazy prices for them.

Yeah, the only figures left that I want are the 4 Fire Emblem ones. There's an ebay listing with all of them for $100 including shipping, but I don't know if I want to spend that kind of money. That'd basically be the end of my Amiibo hunt, though, so it might be worth the peace of mind to never have to search for them again.
I initially wanted to go for the whole set, but then kinda backed off of that idea when I realized that probably wasn't happening.
At this point I'm trying to get at least one of each as they become available, so if I decide later on that I don't want it I can sell it off without issue. Better to get one for normal price out of the gate and decide I don't want it later than to decide I want it later and potentially not be able to get one.
I've inadvertently gone for the entire Disney Infinity lineup though, against my better judgement, but I'm applying the same logic there.
I'm limiting myself to Amiibos from game series that were created/released in the U.S. during the Super Nintendo era or earlier, plus Pokemon.
...though that doesn't really narrow things down.
I've been trying to only buy the characters I play as (unless it's a sale like my used Yoshi). I really, really like the design of Dark Pit though and I'm tempted to see if my Best Buy has any left after work since wifey didn't get there this morning.
Now Twitter reports are saying some, but not all, Gamestops will open an hour early for ore-orders on the retro set -- but only for paid members of their rewards program. Gaaaaaah.

Yeah I believe this was confirmed. I'm so confused though, do stores have a certain allocation? Because if it's a local thing, ok, that's fine, I doubt there are THAT many pro whatevers here that collect amiibo. What I don't want though is to find out they've all been sold before I can even get in the store because it's some national allotment that went 100% to pro people.

In a lot of areas, expect this to happen.
Thinking about it, I fully expect a surge of scalpers and non-scalpers alike to sign up for the paid membership because of this news.
I'd probably go for that. I have 3 Gamestops close to work and I'm already a paid member so why not. I don't really need Game & Watch but Duck Hunt Dog and ROB would be really cool to have.
It's only $15 a year and I always get my money out of it. Heck the b2g1 coupon you get with membership is worth it by itself.
One advantage of this is that if it requires paid membership they can strictly limit it to 1 per account. This means Bobby Scalper can't go between three stores and preorder multiple sets or bring along 3 buddies to buy extras unless they spend $15 extra each (which would make profit pretty slim if it's one per account). Having it linked to a paid membership sucks for folks that hate Gamestop and don't want to join - but it could really help reduce scalping on the set.
You don't need paid membership to have an account with Gamestop. I have two non-paying ones that I got my complete accident, so not hard to imagine a scalper making several.
The second one got made because I forgot I had one and them checking the number brought up nothing (because I gave them my home number, not the cell number the first is under).

Its internet-confirmed to be specifically restricted to the Pro-level members, the ones who paid the 15 bucks for the year or whatever. Not the free rewards members.
Edit: For the stores that open an hour early. I imagine any pre-orders not taken during the first hour will go to first come first serve.
The hope is that plenty of stores will opt-out and open at the regular time for everyone -- numerous accounts indicate Gamestop never allocates enough manhours for each store. Maybe plenty of managers will say "fuck this."

I mean, if the supply is local then I'm not even really worried about it. But if everyone is competing against each other ala Ness? Doesn't matter if *your* store doesn't open early if the ones that do eat through the entire allotment.
I didn't get Dark Pit but someone is going to trade me one for Shulk and a busted-up Diddy Kong so that's not too bad. He originally wanted Shulk plus one other rare.
Yeah, what's going on with this specific amiibo is hilarious.

I doubt it's the character himself that is creating the demand. It's the lack of supply!
This. I counted around 30-40 people in my local Best Buy.
pretty much this.
