Rocky is amazing
Rocky II, also pretty good
Rocky III is overrated but still fun
Rocky IV is pretty good
Rocky V is a mess
Rocky Balboa is maybe the best of the first six
And then Creed is probably the best of the seven
It never comes to mind when I think about great film series but it's pretty consistently high
I think other than Rocky V, which is the only straight up bad one, II is maybe my least favorite
Rocky IV is definitely the one I enjoy the most and will watch pretty much at the drop of a hat
I liked Casino Royale and Skyfall, and even enjoyed Quantum though it's not particularly a replay candidate, and I get what they were going for with the way those movies were made, but they just never seemed like Bond movies, they didn't seem like they came from the same franchise that birthed ludicrous storylines like Moonraker, Goldeneye and Man with the Golden Gun.
This movie was just a giant ball of fun that was ridiculous as only James Bond could be.
I thought it was really nice to see Daniel Craig's last bond film showing us how his version of bond would act in the 'typical' bond story. Like, I'm pretty sure this was Craig's first big bad who actually had their own legit evil guy base with henchmen, and it was great.
rocky ii is my favorite of the franchise, by a wide margin. it just speaks to very real fears.
the rocky franchise has always been weird as by respecting it, you have to respect stallone and a lot of popular film discourse seems incapable of bridging that gap.
One of the other things that makes Rocky Balboa a hard character to take is that it immediately became clear to me that my boss has completely modeled himself after Rocky
He does the exact same thing of filling every possible silence with inane shit and repeating nonsense until you respond
his accent is philly brand italian, but his mushed words are because half his face don't work.
between that and the fact he's a short guy, it explains why he became so obsessed with body image. if you see him talk at length about his career, he'll always tell you how insane it was getting into an impossible shape for the role. he's really a super insecure guy, in that respect.
that's why rocky balboa resonates. he taps into that well of insecurity and uses it, instead of hiding from it like he would in his action hero days.
Escape Plan and Grudge Match both came out within months of each other and seemed like pretty much the movies that people wanted to see in the '80s and '90s
Action movie with Stallone and Schwarzenegger, and Rocky vs. Raging Bull
Grudge Match wasn't very good, which dampened some of my excitement on seeing Escape Plan, but now I think I'll check it out
1 thing I think maybe would've made the original Rocky better is have it start with Rocky and Adrian already together
You lose part of a subplot, but you also lose all that creepy shit and they already go from 0 to 60 on "this guy won't leave me alone" to "we're in love and support each other" anyway
On the subject of Stallone and people being shitty about the way he speaks, is the title of this thread in poor taste, do you guys think? If definitely wasn't my intention, but if that's the read people are getting off of it I'd be happy to change it.

nah it's a reflection of a very real east coast dialect
if you jumbled the words together maybe then it mighta been too much

i feel like you need the rocky bugging adrian scenes, as yeah he's annoying, but it reflects his insecurity. today's the kinda guy that gets freaked out by quiet.
it also humanizes him.
rocky starts the movie as a mob enforcer. if he's already dating adrian, then she is tacitly okay with this, and rocky had no impetus to be a better person.
+3

So, this evening I decided to watch a Clockwork Orange.
The last time I watched this was in the 8th grade when my dad said, "I think its about time you saw this."
I think...
I think my dad may have...
He may have made a very bold choice showing his 15 year-old son this film.

That movie is a-okay!
I was pleasantly surprised by how into the last match I was, even knowing how it ended
Does it look like your fucking birthday
YES
And man... Man, my buddy here hates this film series.
He hates everything about it to the point that he is rooting on Donald Sutherland's character.
From a certain point of view, yes.
I'm obviously rooting for the real hero of this film series...

I'm going to try to work my way through all of them but V before seeing Creed
Rocky IV is definitely the one I enjoy the most and will watch pretty much at the drop of a hat
He never shuts up
The only likable people in that movie are Adrian and Apollo Creed
and the fish and the turtle
I really enjoyed it!

Turtles! Plural! Cuff and Link!
Even The Party at Kitty and Stud's
Like in my mind he is what popular culture portrays him as, a mumbling dumbass who makes action schlock
And then I watched some of the interviews with him for Creed and he's a super smart goodhearted guy with a lot of eloquent things to say
It's actually really nice that he'll be the first person to give all the credit for Creed's success to Ryan Coogler
even the zookeeper?
i mean the reason he speaks the way he does and has that lip curl is because half his face has been paralyzed since birth due to a forceps accident.
Alright, I'm gonna go over his filmography and list all the Stallone films I've seen (but no I haven't seen The Zookeeper)
Actually
Here are the Stallone films I haven't seen, this will be way quicker:
No Place to Hide
Staying Alive
Taxi 3
Shade
Kambakkht Ishq
Zookeeper
Escape Plan
The Expendables 3
Reach Me
Most of that is stuff from the last fifteen years but yeah
I saw Spy Kids 3D in theaters because Stallone was in it

escape plan is secretly a brilliant movie that examines exactly what it means to be sly stallone.
check it out.
It also had the only instance I've seen of Schwarzenegger actually speaking German, which was kinda bizarre
