My thesis was about using computer vision to track cells under a microscope and create a control law to turn on and off the illumination in a way that minimizes their exposure to light while collecting all the necessary data.
So none of the key components were actually about biology, but I wanted to give a nice intro and motivation to the paper. So I'd write something like:
Visually studying the division of cells using a microscope can be extremely difficult. Most types of animal cells are translucent, their internal structures near invisible to the human eye. To make the internal structures visible, cells are injected with special fluorescent dyes or genetically engineered to produce fluorescent dyes attached to specific cellular structures. The cell can then be exposed to ultraviolet light, which causes the dye to fluoresce, highlighting desired features inside. Unfortunately, the fluorescent dyes begin to break down when exposed to ultraviolet light. The toxic byproducts from this breakdown damages the cells and causes them to self-destruct. This effect can make studying behavior difficult.
I'd get back notes like:
Difficult to observe in what way? Difficult to whom?
Most types of cell? What types are not?
This is subjective, make it objective.
Which structures, which dyes, name techniques
The cell CAN be exposed to light? What does exposure mean? What frequency of UV? How long?
What does the light do to the dye? What do the byproducts do to the cell?
Self destruct is vague. Cells aren't robots, what is really happening?
OH MY GOD MY PAPER IS NOT ABOUT THIS AND IF I ADDRESS ALL THESE QUESTIONS THE TEXT WILL BE UNREADABLE.
And so the text became unreadable.

That's the dead give-away that you are reading a modern scientific paper, when the introduction (which is the specific section of the article that is supposed to provide background to help the reader appreciate the paper and put the research into context) is as unreadable as the results section.
It stems from a bitter hatred of language and communication.
I am writing this post to inform you all that my next kataner goal is the black katana mkII. Be aware that after I hint all the little bugs, you will all be asked to help me destroy a hyper seltas queen

Stupid bullshit cheesemaking update:
I read the instructions for aging cheese and it said to dip the cheese in wax, wrap it in parchment, and place it in a wine cellar. Which was like, way not helpful because I am definitely not doing any of those things, nor do I have the means to do some of them. So fresh cheese it is!
I refrigerated the cheese for a day, then cut it open to taste. This is the curdled milk disk I made. It's a jack cheese recipe filled with fresh jalapeño.
it was amazing. beautiful, perfect cheese. fucking shit. GOD DAMN IT.

To my credit I didn't constabtly grab the prof, I kept waiting for him to check on me. Several times tho I had to say 'I understand that you want me to so and so, but I don't understand how to apply that at all'. Pretty humiliating. Wish I had the ability to ask better questions when frustrated. I think I basically get the topic now tho. Very painful.

Good job! You stay in there and you humiliate yourself over and over until you realize that it's not humiliation at all but this is what learning feels like.

Chu, the number one complaint of all my professors is that students do not show up to office hours when they are struggling. You're actually doing the thing that they want you to do that most students don't. That humiliation is what it feels like to be an actually good student. Quietly failing on your own is easy, and it's what most students do.
