Not much confirmed right now. No reports of any deaths or even very serious injury.
Gunman in custody. So far, looks to be the best possible version of a terrible thing.

Please delay discussion of potential political repercussions until we have concrete details on what happened.

    I'd like to delay discussion of political fallout. It's definitely a discussion we will have, but first lets see what actually happened. No deaths (including the gunman) is a good thing and I'll be happy for it.

    Rand Paul, the Republican senator for Kentucky, told MSNBC he was practising in a batting cage just outside the fence to the baseball field when the shots started.

    He heard a succession of five or 10 shots and then realised the Republican majority whip senator Steve Scalise was hit on the baseball field and was “trying to drag himself through the dirt towards the dugout”.

    Two Congressional staffers were also on the ground, with shots kicking up dirt all around them, he said.

    Paul, who hid behind a tree with a staffer who leapt over a high fence, described shots landing in the dirt in the outfield and around them.

    He said at one point the gunman, who he thought was armed with a rifle must have reloaded and then there were 50 or 60 shots.

    “Everybody probably would have died except for the fact that the Capitol Hill police were there,” he said.

    The Alexandria police chief and Capitol police chief have both made statements. All they said was yes there was a shooting, event is over, we'll let you know. See WaPo link in OP for details.

    edit: this is the party that made up a terrorist attack in Bowling Green because "why not!?" .... I'm terrified what they'll do with something real.

    Flake and Duncan have both given statements to the press about the gunman, but they have him dressed two different ways.

    Duncan, who is the one that gave us the "are they democrats or republicans" quote wasn't there for the actual incident, and was leaving early.

    So it's probably best to let this all shake out before start speculating too heavily on motive.

    If the suspect was a Democrat, he'll blame Democrats. If he was a Republican he'll blame the Democrats and their fake news media for turning the man against Republicans with their lies. If he was mentally ill, then it will also be Obamas fault that the ACA didn't get him the help he needed.

    So, no fatalities confirmed. Which is good. Just another one of americas 30000 gun-violence episodes a year. By random chance alone, the odds of one of these involving a republican congres member is about once every 20 years. So, there we have it. Another gun violence tragedy, this time targeting our political leaders. But, with so many each year, no one can be lucky forever. Thank goodness trained officers were swiftly present to deal with the shooter in a professional way. We can only hope that proper gun control will follow.

    If the shooter turns out to be a far-right Trumpshirt that was trying to assassinate the Congressman because he wasn't supporting Trump enough, you can bet that Fox will drop the story faster than the terrorist attack against the IRS building (remember that? The guy flying his plane into an IRS building and killing several people? But because he was a white guy that incidence of domestic terrorism just vanished off the radar?)

    I do, because my father was working as an IRS agent at the time, and the attack really scared me. (Also, the comments that Wesley Snipes made about that attack are why I will never watch anything he's acted in anymore.)

    What qualifies as a major domestic incident?

    Two Indian guys were shot, one died, and a guy that tried to chase down the assailant was also shot, earlier this year in my neck of the woods.

    And the Indian guys were shot because random white old racist guy thought they were Iranians that were taking his job, or some shit
