[Thanksgiving] is but once a year (mostly)

It's time for Thanksgiving! The best holiday.

The best holiday.

In fact, Thanksgiving is so wonderful, I believe it should be held every month between October and March.

Why is Thanksgiving wonderful you may ask?

Simple!

Food. Lots and lots of glorious food. and the calories don't even count! I read that somewhere.

Turkey! Which according to one Benjamin Franklin (inventor, and hider of countless treasures) should have been the symbol of America (I am inclined to agree)
veqobx9t5em8.jpg

Mashed Potatoes! Bonus points for frying them in bacon grease the following morning (unless you're camping out waiting to trample your fellow man in order to get a new TV)
z3gbivxdupwv.jpg

Peas and Pearl Onions! The superior way to serve both peas and pearl onions (be sure to slather this in the following picture)
41e7wv88qfd9.jpg

Gravy! I like mushrooms in mine. However, the year has been poor for mushrooms due to lack of rain which I am not thankful for.
wloncdt4sehy.jpg

Stuffing! Yeah yeah, I know it's called dressing if it has never felt the inside of a dead bird. I'm still calling it stuffing.
t9soa3ywugsz.jpg

Stuffed Mushrooms! Because they're delicious!
jacvm6qi6pt7.jpg

This Stuff! Not my bag of tea, but hey, you do you.
mhr9a3scquhg.jpg

Sweet Potato Pie! or Pumpkin Pie .... as long as it's got a healthy dose of fresh whipped cream, I'm good to go.
180yaggodfzp.jpg

The most Important Part of Thanksgiving! Add these to any of the dishes above. Or just eat them from the container because you're an american and no one can stop you! Not even your doctor who is obsessed with your sodium levels. Get a life guy, geez.

What are your plans for Thanksgiving this year? Aside from stuffing your face and lapsing into a food coma?

I plan to watch MST3k and take a nap!

Thanksgiving has never been the same since I moved out of state from my family. Not only do you no longer have family nonsense, you also get to cook all that shit yourself and fuuuuuuck that I'm just going to buy some hungry mans or something.

Gettin' a rare treat this Thanksgiving, as we're having it at my brother's place again, but my oldest brother and his wife will be joining us this year!

It'll be nice for mom who doesn't get to see us three together in one place as much anymore

That is, of course, if my oldest brother doesn't decide to cancel at the last minute and fuck off somewhere else

Halloween thread? More like the Canada thread, you Americanocentric silly goose!

No, seriously, why you have Thanksgiving weeks after the harvest is done is beyond me. Nothing is fresh anymore!

Deep fry a turkey after brining it. You won't be able to go back afterwards.

Got my Turkey, got my brine ready to go. Have enough propane to run the fry burner and enough charcoal to run the smoker. I am ready for my friendsgiving trial run of smoked and fried turkey.

Going to be making a vegan shepard's pie, vegetarian stuffing and gravy, and biscuits as my sides, and, and if I'm feeling saucy I might go for a Dutch baby for dessert. My wife is going to make devil'd eggs and a big pot of mashed taters.

As I have said my brother forcefully has taken cookie dough from me and baked it
In his words you can do that when you live by yourself

So deep frying the turkey turned out to be more work than it was worth. For actual thanksgiving I'll just smoke the bird the entire time. It was still super tasty though, so live and learn!

So when it comes to the Thanksgiving centerpiece there are a lot of options to choose from

Personally, I'm a big fan of Field Roast's cranberry roast:

    5lj58iu7c0bk.jpg

The flaky crust and cranberry filling are both delish. But the old standby, Tofurky, is good too:

    auukm7ep2ngk.jpg

Actually I like basically every fake prepackaged turkey brand that I've tried. You can't go too far wrong here.

It's important to note that a lot of these turkeys benefit from basting, but the cranberry roast doesn't! (It makes the crust soggy.)

One year we tried making Serious Eats's very complex "Vegetables Wellington" recipe. It didn't turn out well, but also my brother screwed up the mushrooms (you're supposed to pulse the mushrooms a few times in the processor to get them chopped, but he just left the processor run which made mushroom paste. Mushroom paste is, as it turns out, gross!)

I've also made Isa Chandra's "Sweet & Smoky Glazed Tofu Ham" several times, which is kinda weird but also pretty and delicious. Recommended!
