I very almost gave in to temptation to buy the game last night, so I'm taking this Hot Fix Hot Mess as a divine sign that I was right to resist. I'm waiting until my holidays begin and I can take the lack of sleep that is inevitably going to ensue when I start playing.
I love this game but breaking everyone's save games of multiple hours and then not getting even an ETA out 12 hours later is not a good show, I hope they fix it soon and handle it better in the future.

The issue wouldn't affect you anymore. They reverted the broken hotfix 4, so if you get the game right now, you get the working version (hotfix 3), and will only get an update once the hotfix 4 is working as intended, which means there's no way to get locked out of your saves temporarily.
It only affects people that downloaded the original, broken hotfix 4 yesterday already, and played & saved with it, since they now have save games for a version of the game that was un-released.
Unfortunately that's tens of thousands of people probably.
Remember ye days of olde, before Steam took control away, when we just didn't install patches until they'd been out a few days and deemed safe by the community? Good times.

Yes, that’s the point. If I’d started last night as I was tempted to do I’d be caught up in this as well. By staying strong I dodged the bullet.
What's this about a Hotfix borking saves?! I. . .certainly played during a time when there was no "update." Did I manage to dodge it (I haven't updated my game since Hotfix 3).
Actually. . .wait, STEAM says BG3 got updated at 930PM last night. Oh dear. And damn I had this on "automatically update." I'm too afraid to look. Feel like I'm about to see a corpse.

the 9:30pm update was the reversion to an earlier build, it's more if you played yesterday between when hotfix 4 initially released, which I want to say was in the morning, and when they rolled it back, which was at night
Oh I absolutely did. So no progress was saved; what's the fix to not start the game until the hotfix is fixed?

You have two options if you got the hotfix that came out yesterday and saved DURING that time (before it was pulled):
1. Wait for the hotfix to come out again.
2. Load a previous save that occurred before you downloaded the hotfix.
I think it doesn't break the game so you can launch it and see if the save still loads.
Try my next-level gamer strat of "be at work all day when the hotfix drops and then gets recalled" and you too will avoid having any lost progress due to unloadable saves

Hah. My fix turned out to be "get briefly obsessed with an entirely different game".
This is in addition to my cunning strategy of avoiding all the late game bugs that are still in the game by cleverly starting over and over again because I can't settle on a character.
Yesterday we had to rollback hotfix 4 because of a rare compiler issue. To avoid this from happening again we’re changing the way we deploy patches.
Players who had downloaded hotfix 4 were unable to continue from their hotfix 4 saves once we had rolled back the patch. While this is not ok, rolling back the patch in order to diagnose the problem and limit those exposed to it was the lesser of two evils. We truly appreciate your patience & understanding while we worked to understand the problem.
This situation is remedied now with the re-release of hotfix 4 but we recognize the frustration caused by this and want to apologize. That’s why we’re changing things up.
All of you should now be able to continue your adventures, but essentially, here’s what happened:
Hotfix 4 went through a rigorous QA pipeline and was confirmed as a candidate for release yesterday. However, we triggered a rebuild of the version relatively last minute to change the version number. The version that was cooked was unfortunately plagued by compiler corruption, which was causing certain exceptions that normally wouldn’t cause crashes to - you guessed it - cause crashes.
Since compiler issues like that are extremely rare, we weren’t prepared for it. We should’ve been. We messed up.
It didn’t help that it happened at the worst possible time of day but luckily we have studios in multiple countries. Overnight (for Europe), our teams in Canada and then Malaysia worked to diagnose what went wrong, so that work could begin on redeploying a fixed version of the hotfix
To avoid this from happening in the future, we’ll make sure that any change made to future version candidates - no matter how small, or innocuous - will always go through our full & comprehensive QA pipeline, which include a global in-house QA team, automated testing, unit tests, and save-game compatibility testing.

since my campaign with the Dragonborn Monk is approaching the endgame I of course already started thinking about what character I'm going to play next so before bedtime I rolled up a Tiefling Sorc who is probably going to be a bit selfishly evil in that looking out for number 1 comes first and everything else is a distant secondary concern.
She's probably going to be like "I can get cool psionic powers? from snorting tadpoles? sign me the fuck up" whereas my monk, as monks are, highly averse to such and never touched a single tadpole and maybe only picked 1 of those sorts of options after getting a sense of what was going on

My in-character assumption when multiclassing into Warlock is I was always a Warlock, but the tadpole was dulling my powers and memory. That works right?
Actually what I'm interested in, after talking to Wyll about his patron, is how much patron interaction there is. I assume whichever one you pick you never actually like, meet or see them and they're just a generic version of each one, but it would be a fun thought if dialogue and choices you make throughout the game could later on determine the specific nature of your pact patron (Demon or Devil, Evil Star or Aboleth Ancient, Summer Court or Winter Court, that sort of thing)

I'm nearing the end of act 2 and I've gotten plenty of Warlock dialogue but only a couple of Great Old One options, usually drawing on them for more power in a creepy occult situation
Instead of playing for a little bit before bed last night, I ended up downloading Vortex (the new version of Nexus Mod Manager) and messing with the DIY Font mod I found to try and make the text bigger/readable from further away from my TV. Didn't seem to work, so I'm flummoxed and still left squinting at item names.
Something everyone probably knew but I didn't: When you click on an item you're wearing (aka on the item slot), it shows you all items of that type in your party.

On the eye colour selection screen, there's a box named Heterochromia. And if you tick that box, you get to choose a different colour for each eye. Then when you're in the eye colour selection screen, you can tick another box to give you all eye colours instead of just the race-restricted ones.
Larian promised this build and future ones will pass through QA even if theres a very slight change, unlike last hotfix, so I would say it should be safe now
Well the new version no longer allows borderless fullscreen windows on my PC, it still shows the Windows taskbar/start menu at the bottom. And changing it to fullscreen causes CTD so....not a great patch for me lol

If you played during hotfix 4, those saves won't work. I just loaded an earlier save and kept on truckin'.

The saves you made with hotfix 4 should work once that hotfix is re-released.
Apparently it's coming "end of day, EU"
Now, the end of a usual Belgian work day should be in about 2 hours, 39 minutes, at the latest, without overtime.
The actual end of the day in Belgium would be in 8 hours, 39 minutes.
