[Mod On] Oblivion

Long story short a friend of mine just got Oblivion and has never played it before. I watched him play for a weekend straight just enthralled in the game and slowly but surely I got a bug up my butt to play it again myself. Thing is I haven't played it since release and I'm wondering what the best and most necessary mods out right now are that would really make the game A. more playable, B. look better, C. add the best additional content, and D. are just plain highly recommended.
So I'm thinking this could be a thread where we all recommend the absolute best mods for the best Oblivion experience not just for me, but for anybody else that might feel like picking the game up again.
Last night before bed I installed the game and haven't touched it yet. So let's see which mods I should go with. I'd like to try one of the level/scaling mods, and any mods that will make the game look better like the texture and distance LOD mods are what I'd really like as I have a new computer and want to just dial the graphics to 11 in Oblivion with the best graphical mods available. Oh and maybe something that will make all the characters not look like a horses taint.
FCOM has OOO in it. I don't know how much it has progressed since v0.78, but you probably need to download the major mods and their updates according to the instructions, and follow the instructions to the letter. At one point, there were some utilities like Wryebash that were needed as well to get everything running smoothly. The video link is FCOM, and the FCOM page is in my prior post in this thread. It used to take an hour or two to setup and test but it is worth it x10.
One of the first times I played it, I wandered into some weird zombie death march that turned into an all out brawl between npcs, forest creatures vs zombies while I stood back and watched, picking off a zombie here or there with my bow.

I'll go on the other side when I say "fuck OOO."
But, you know, I liked the scaling...
Personally, for any new player, the only mod you should install is BTMod. If the game really pisses you off that much, THEN go for OOO.
Also, for good fun, nothing can beat Hilarity. As a brief description of some of the spells it adds:
POLYMORPH SHEEP - This spell transforms the victim into a sheep. Permanantly.
PICKPOCKET - This spell gives the target a compulsion to acquire as much gold as possible. Use this with the "Hope you got 10 Bux" Spell to make them pickpocket.
SUMMON BANDITS/MARAUDERS - These spells summon a random gang of 6 Bandits or Marauders. Note that Bandits and Marauders attack each other on sight.
SUMMON WEAK GOBLINS - This spell summons a pack of 10 weak goblins who are easily killed by just about anything.
SUMMON TITAN OGRE - This spell summons a giant Titan Ogre. It is immune to spells and highly resistant to weapons. it can be killed, but not without heavy casualties. Sit back and watch!
FOLLOW ME - This makes the target have an irrestible urge to follow you around for 24 hours.
FREE PONY - This spell gives the target a free Pony. The catch is the pony starts high, high above the targets head.
STARK REALITY - Strips a target or group of all their clothing, armor and items. Permanantly.
SUMMON THUNDERSTORM - This calls a magical storm into being. It takes about 90 seconds for the storm to reach
its full potential, but it is well worth the wait.
Version 1.1
Many new spells have been added
Gnomize - Reduces the target to half its normal size for 3 minutes.
Gigantism - Increases the target to twice its normal size for 3 minutes.
Insane Hercules - Transforms the target into an extremely powerful and hard to kill warrior, and makes
them homicidal.
Resurrect - Brings the victim back from the dead.
Failed Levitate - The target suddenly finds themselves 1500 units above the ground. Don't use this inside.
Polymorph Crab - This spell transforms the victim into a common mudcrab. Permanantly. VERY potentially
game-breaking. Did I mention "don't save when using this mod"?
FCOM additions are rarely anything more than recolourings of already existing objects- certainly the only positive impact is the decrease of lev.scaling- but the combat is still unbalanced in a sad way.
What would really improve the game is some interesting, branching quests with well fleshed-out NPCs. That's the thing (missing in Oblivion, maybe except for DB, though it's still linear) that would make me cope up with the poor combat and actually enjoy the thing.
Know of any of these?
Friends don't let friends play Oblivion without OOO and BTMod.
BTMod is old and busted, Darnified UI is the new hotness.
Wow, that makes it actually look like a PC game :!!:
Then does anybody know the mod that makes the far off objects high res as well? I remember there was a mod that extended the detail texture range way out. Actually would it work with Qarl's mod or would it conflict with it?

I use this mod and the one that gives my horses saddlebags. It's my first time through Oblivion, and I think those are the only mods I want to use.
One question, though: after I installed Darnified UI, the cursor no longer changes to the eye cursor when I try to sneak around. Is there any way to fix that? I guess it doesn't matter much with this first character since he's a mage, but it might be useful for the future.

I really am hating how things scale up at the end. I just did the Felldew quest... Man, what the hell was that? I must have killed 50 Elytra. My Armor went to zero condition in no time, and if my Dusk/Dawn sword ever ran out, then I would be stuck summoning deadroths if I even dreamed of dealing any damage... I think I am ready to install these fuckers. Thing is, with OOO, way back when it was just OOO alone, I never did find any of the new quests or anything that it added... Made me feel really stupid...

It moves the stealth indicator to the bottom of the screen instead of changing your crosshair. You can change it back to the crosshair by changing a line in one of the xml files. I don't know which one off hand as I don't have Oblivion installed currently.

Wow, thanks! Now I see why I never noticed it at the bottom. It's hidden by the "you can level up now" indicator. I'd go find a bed to level up, but I've probably built up enough skills to go up about 6 more levels, and I don't really want to deal with more difficult monsters for a while.
"Hey, ya know what's awesome, if we sent Dave a Steam update without his permission, interrupting Oblivion and then crashing it right before he was going to save."
I'm just wondering if these two mods are any good, they seem nice, and they are fairly highly rated but I'd trust actual human posters over a static score any day of the week. I also push the issue because I'm scared that if I do that huge mod that was the first reply other mods like these might conflict with it. Does anybody have any idea if these two mods would conflict with any other mods or even eachother?

The Lost Paladins mod claims to have no known conflicts. Load it after OOO (if using OOO) to be sure everything's ok. I think the Lost Spires (which is pretty well-regarded) has no major conflicts either.
are there any mods that make Oblivion's combat good?
I find it difficult to believe that people consider Oblivion's combat bad. It's such an exponential improvement over Morrowind that it's almost impossible to go back.

A hundred times zero is still zero :P
Dublo- there was a mod that allowed you to lock the camera on an opponent, I think it was just called combat mod.
Deadly Reflex makes the combat a bit more fun. Blocking is actually timed, you can decapitate people, cut them in half, crush their heads, and lop off limbs.

Is Quarl's texture pack compatible with LandscapeLOD?
Also if anything, this question right here is the most important to me in the entire thread. If the Quarl's texture pack is compatibly with the LandscapeLOD one without any conflicts.

You want the inventory mod. Gosh I can't recall what it's named, but it allows you to use tile-based inventory like Morrowind, with tool-tip style item stats, collapsible item categories, and even switch freely between that and the line-by-line style with a button in the window frame. It's also customizeable in that you can choose various item tile borders, sizes, etc, and it's compatible with BTmod/DARNified UI as I recall.

Yeah, you will definatly want both of those. OOO makes the game fun.

Microwave.
If it's just a combination of mods that you need to install separately anyway what's the point?
Just put it in your 360 then shake the system like a newborn baby.
That's done.
Now to convince myself that re-buying Oblivion is worth it just for the mods.
What?
Blood?
Oh, you mean my clothes. No no, katsup stains, good sir. I assure you...

Wraith Blades?
Telekenesis spells that will let me levitate a statue into the air and ride it like a magic carpet?
Magic carpets?

Shivering Isles Spoiler
Those mods all have compatibilty issues with each other. FCOM fixes those problems.
Yeah, that's probably the best texture pack out there right now unless he's started on QTP4. I'm not sure if it includes distance LOD textures though.

2. Deadly Reflex
And the rest is up to you. Seriously, I have around 160 mods. Mods save the game.
