So, I like the idea of the science side being able to target specific subsystems. Is that science ships who get that ability, or is it science characters? Is it all that useful?

The bridge officers get those abilities and they are assorted through everything. They seem pretty good from what I've seen.
Also Cruisers do more damage when they explode... Soooooo...
Steam is up and running, I got my key and download started. Everybody gogogo
Man, and like i predicted, nothing from Amazon for me yet. I shot them another email, hopefully i can get this resolved by tomorrow afternoon. If not i guess ill preorder on Steam, even though their preorder bonus isnt that great.

Sub System targeting is science ships.
Yup, while Sub System targeting skills do (or at least, used to) pop up on a tactical(?) BO skill set from time to time, flying a Science vessel gets you the whole range of them just for flying in one.
So after reading the official forums a bit, every thread is either about "STO vs Random MMO", an "honest opinion thread" or "how I get in beta???" and of course "lol the naming contest suxxors!!!!11"
Smells a lot like the WoW forums.

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.

Yeah I'm not a super MMO vet or anything but I have learned that you should never ever read the official forums. It will hurt your soul.
So I didn't even know about this game a week ago and now I'm getting crazy hyped for it. Just watched Wrath of Khan just to get even more into the Star Trekky mood. Good times.
I was on my way to bed and thought I'd run the patcher one more time tonight. It looks like I'm getting another patch, and the server status indicator at the top says the server is up. Has anyone else tried recently to play? This patch is going very fast. I'll report again when I'm finished in about 2 minutes.
Awesome, finally got my beta key from Amazon. Apparently it was already assigned, the email just didnt go out.
For anyone else having trouble, just keep emailing. Took me 4 tries, the support guy eventually just emailed it straight to me, no waiting. About 15 minutes turn around time on the support emails, which is pretty impressive.
Patching up now, so glad the patcher isnt as slow as the downloader. I have no idea how im gonna be able to work tomorrow, its gonna be such a long day... i have a feeling im gonna get stomach flu around lunchtime... :winky:
You have to sign up, but theyre handing out open beta keys. I just got a bunch for my friends. A legit email is required, because theyll mail you the password so you can login to your account. You can even use mailinator (i did). Keys are reported working despite the comments on the site, ive got a friend who signed up and is downloading now.
*edit* apparently the keys that werent working were from the first batch last week, all the keys handed out now should work.
Steam running yay. It's going to take me the rest of the day, and probably a bit of night to download it though, boo. Still I suppose given how busy it's likely to be tonight it's not all bad.
Now I just hope the client I downloaded is correct.
Damn, I'm still at university, I wanna play!D:

I think I'm going to try a Tac officer in a Science vessel in the open beta. The science vessels are maneuverable enough, and the sci BO powers seem pretty sweet.
That's... bizzare. I have no idea why they'd cap it like that, or that low. It isn't like the higher-level content is even totally unready - they were testing content well into the high 20s in closed beta.
I'd almost be skeptical of that, if only because it's comically low and Cryptic has nothing to hide. I'd expect testing of at least the mid-20s content to take place.
EDIT: wait, yeah, if I'm reading this right, they're capping levels as they go - they want people to flog the content in stages and not try to race to max level and ignore stuff like episode content (this was a problem at times in CB). I severely doubt it'll be capped at 16 all the way through.
Well there's nothing on there that says how long that cap will be in place. It seems fine to me. Will probably push more people in testing out the exploration content, which is still kinda buggy, or the pvp stuff.

You can name two ships the exact same; it's the registry numbers that must be different.
Nova/Aurora/Quasar Science Tier 2, 11-20:
Olympic/Hope/Horizon Science Tier 3, 21-30:
Intrepid/Cochrane/Discovery Science Tier 4, 31-40:
Man those later tiers are way different.. Must make for some pretty crazy mix and matches.
I never asked for this!

I cant imagine why not if you have the patcher.

You are correct, sir!
Gonna leave the patcher to run overnight then I'm hopping online at 10AM PST!
SO HYPE, as they say in the Street Fighter thread.

I finally got my Engineer in one of those right before closed beta ended. Was fun. You turn sloooow but you can take some fire.

Most important, it seems the start of Open Beta will have a level cap of 16.
