You'd be surprised, Wrench. I just made the mistake of taking working gap year without leaving myself enough time to actually study the subject I was interviewing for. I should have found a time to do the work but, hey, it's all water under the bridge now.
I am going to a totally sweet university in October and it will be straight ballin'. (Yes Durham, Sil).

I interviewed at Oxford and fucked up in the best ways possible:
a) Going all post-modern up ins with the head of English, who was a devout traditional/classic literary kinda dude.
b) Responding to the question "What do you think made Lord of the Rings such a great book?" with "Certainly not Tolkien's writing style because hoo boy he is terrible." At a college whose greatest alumni was Tolkien
I'm about to graduate from an Art school that didn't requite a portfolio to get it.
Hah, yeah, I'm about to finish my course at a guitar college that required nothing but a short demo to get into. I swear, some people on my course just cannot play guitar.
I've applied for a two year Graphic Design course that requires a portfolio. I got a reply from them a week ago saying that my portfolio is good enough, and now I have to go an interview next week and prove that I'm not a complete dolt.

whats with you guys applying for colleges around the country or somethin
here its like, 3 universities in the city that most people go to, or if you dont get in or want something more local you can go to a smaller one around the suburbs somewhere
and most people live at home unless they have come from overseas or another state
so the people you know will be sprawled all over the city and oftentimes talk of doing somethin on weekends will include or conclude with the phrase 'man i dont wanna travel that far' no matter where you are talking about
also yay i got exams starting in 4 weeks and i cant make it to one of the later ones so i spoke to my lecturer and instead of doing it at the normal time of 5 weeks from now, or the normal supplementary time of like a month later for people who were sick or something on the day, i get to do it in 2 weeks! and i jut found out this week
so i will have less time to study for it and its in final week of uni which is obviously the greatest time to have an exam worth 60% because rarely are there 8 assignments and 4 assessments in that week no sirree

I think it is because Sydney is a tiny city so we don't have to travel far to get a good education, since youre never more than say an hour from the city until you get into rural NSW.
But for someone living in Bumfuck, USA they have to travel to one o' dem dar fancy univeristies in the cities because of the massive urban sprawl.

I think it has more to do with pride than with those factors you listed. Most of the people that went out of state in my high school did so because A) they were snobby assholes and they thought that in state schools were beneath them, or they / their families had a shitload of money so it didn't matter where they went.
well okay oden but i would have theorised something more insulting like maybe they flew in 3 educated people to the country and so people try to go to one of the colleges that has those guys instead of one thats staffed by people who got fired from the local dmv
"The term liberal arts has come to mean studies that are intended to provide general knowledge and general intellectual skills rather than more specialized occupational, scientific, or artistic skills."
Oh goody that sounds like amazing fun.
"High I am here to do med science, when does my art history class begin?
And I heard people who specialise in certain fields are called specialists because they have extensive knowledge in topics that cover all aspects of that particular topic, not irrelevant ones.
i think with engineering at my uni we get free choice for like 2 subjects
but im doin double degree anyway so i dont get that, instead i just gotta do a bunch of arts subjects
its kinda crappy cos im studyin language, and i can either do a year of it with the free choices thing, or i can do 5 years of language and then have to pick out a few other bullshit subjects just to fill up the extra credits and waste time

is there some huge pressure on everyone to get a college degree in the states or else you are destined for a life of burger flipping
because here it's like "oh you go to uni, that is nice."
colleges are moneymakers
Actually I think 20 or 21 is average.
that is terribly depressing
for me it was all 'go to uni because thats how you are judged'
"I'm going to university!"
It just sounds dumb to me.
I didnt go to a fancy private school nor am I asian so it was never really expected of me
(not racist)
It was more like "____ youre smart so go to uni"
No you are just an idiot, clearly you didnt go to univeristy.
Yes it is.
And in many cases, if you dont go to college, you are at a significant disadvantage.
land of opportunity!
(if you are smart and/or wealthy)
You know who acts like they didn't go to university?
Ketchem_ash, thats who.
University sounds like one place. There is more than one university.
Fucking freaks from across the pond/border.
see in Australia a college is where you go if you're a dumbfuck drop-out - you can get into any course as long as you pay
whereas with a university you have to have at least a marginal amount of talent to get in
so, ah-hah, it is me who could call you stupid
if we're playing the "apply judgements based on my own culture to other cultures" game
I am reading about universities in america and it is all so stupidly complicated
I just saw the picture on liberal arts colleges page and closed the window.
Oh goody that sounds like amazing fun.

We call those Community Colleges around here.
