I'm even more happy that I didn't start my LP in December now. I love Holiday Hangout, but it sure sucks the momentum out of stuff like this.

Operation Devil's Ring Mission Debrief
Civilians Saved - 1/18 (pretty sure this person just wandered past the Skyranger and the pilot offered them a lift)
Maj. Label promoted to Colonel. He may train in Mayhem (increased damage to AoE and suppression attacks) or as a Rocketeer (carry one extra rocket) @Label (though I think I can guess which one you'll pick)
Maj. Rankenphile promoted to Colonel. She aquires either Resilience (immunity to critical hits), or a Killer Instinct (critical hit probability increase when Run & Gun is activated.) @Rankenphile
Sgt. Sim promoted to Lieutenant. Training is in Revive (return critically injured soldiers to 33% health instead of just preventing their death) or Rifle Suppression (fire a shot which impairs the targets aim and grants a reaction shot if the target moves) @ASimPerson
Cpl. Scherbchen promoted to Sergeant. Nicknamed Lady Grey. May be trained in Disabling Shot (disables the target's weapon; weapon can be fixed using a reload action) or carry a Battle Scanner (throw an item which grants extended visibility for 2 turns; 2 uses per mission) @Scherbchen
Cpl. Crawfish promoted to Sergeant. Nicknamed Road Block. May be trained in Suppression (fire a shot which impairs the targets aim and grants a reaction shot if the target moves) or carry a Shredder Rocket (weaker than a regular rocket, but causes all enemies hit to take +33% damage from all sources for the next 4 turns) @ElderlyCrawfish
Sq. Kathulu promoted to Corporal. She can be trained in Aggression (confers +10% critical chance per enemy in sight up to max +30%) or Tactical Sense (confers +5 Defense per enemy in sight up to max +20) @Kristmas Kthulhu
Col. Label additionally attains an extra rank in Psionics. He may learn how to create a Telekinetic Field (creates a temporary field that greatly reduces the Aiming accuracy of anyone firing through it, friend or foe) or develop the power of Mind Control (if successful, allows the psychic to control an enemy unit for 3 turns; does not affect robots or inorganics)
I have not been reading this for ages. Do you still have 100% critical with flanks? If so, then I'll take Tactical Sense. Actually, I'll take it either way.

Yeah sorry I totally brain farted and wrote your name instead. clearly I got confused between my two most murderous ladies.
@Brovid Hasselsmof Commander, I think I'd like to cause more Mayhem out there, and training for Mind Control sounds like an awful lot of fun! Probably best to tell the troops it only works on Xeno scum, though. Just so, you know, they're not worried.
What's the groupthink on Revive vs. Rifle Supression?
I always figured revive was a bit of a double-edged sword, since 33% health isn't really that much, whereas a stabilized soldier can't do anything but they won't get re-killed either.

Suppression's really useful. Revive gets you someone half out of their mind on pain meds and panic.

Uh, actually, they can still be killed be explosions and suchlike.
Trust me, there is nothing worst than stabilizing a guy who went down next to a car.
I did forget that detail that stabilized soldiers can still die, though. In that case revive at least gives them a chance to make it back to the Skyranger. I'll stick with Revive.

Ideally you are gonna wanna have at least one Suppression dude, but Revive really is exquisite, especially into the late game if you wanna field two Medics, which I often do. You're gonna have more than enough healing to go around to make an unlucky soldier useful without burning all your heals.
Obviously, you should never go down near a car then. Suppression is a tool you can use to keep people from going down in the first place.
Hi there. Hi. Maybe you've never played this game called XCOM.
If there is one thing this game has taught me, it's to be leery of using things that explode as cover. Things that have already exploded however... those make excellent cover.
Honestly, I don't think I've ever lost a stabilized person to an exploding car. I've lost three or four outright to exploding cars, but that's about it.
I dunno what to tell you then man. Maybe you're playing too aggressive? I've logged several hundred hours in the game and exploding cars just really aren't a problem I've had to deal with.

It usually takes a turn for a vehicle to blow up unless an explosive is used, so you usually have time to pull soldiers back to somewhere else. The only aliens that have explosives are Mutons, Muton Elites, Heavy Floaters, Sectopods, and Cyberdisks. And none of those enemies use their explosives except under very specific circumstances (particularly when your guys are all grouped up together). I've played this game a ton, and honestly only lost a soldier maybe a handful of times due to an exploding vehicle, and half the time it was probably my fault (e.g., being too aggressive and activating additional enemies).

Woop woop commander Smof is getting a bit slack. Apparently I never did the last round of promotions before going on hiatus, and I'm too lazy to look back through the thread and find what people chose sooo, these people currently have promotions waiting:
@Rankenphile - colonel - resilience (immunity to critical hits) or killer instinct (run & gun gives +50% damage for that turn)
@Feriluce - captain - dense smoke (grenades have increased aoe and +20 extra defense) or combat drugs ( +20 will and +10% crit chance for those in the cloud)
@Balefuego - captain - executioner (+10 aim against targets with <50% health) or opportunist (reactions have no aim penalty and can cause crits)
@Munkus Beaver - captain - close combat (free reaction vs any enemy within 4 tiles) or bring em on (+1 crit damage for every enemy in team sight up to max +5)
@Alagante - lieutenant - heat ammo (+100% damage vs robits) or rapid reaction (extra reaction shot if the first is a hit)
Also @scherbchen I got yours wrong, your choice is actually gunslinger (+2 damage with pistols) or damn good ground (+10 aim and +10 defense vs enemies at lower elevation)
Also also @ASimPerson make a decision. Revive or suppression?

So after that terror abduction mission we managed to scrape together some elerium, mostly from shrapnel the med team dug out of Sgt. Crawfish. Which enabled us to do some research on a gun that will hopefully let us finally shoot down that bloody overseer ship.
While that was going on, we detected a new type of UFO over the US.
Unfortunately we were unable to shoot it down. Our Firestorm was almost destroyed so I aborted and sent out the Interceptor in its place, which was never really gonna work. And it got shot down! In like 3 hits! Which totally took me by surprise. I don't think I've ever lost an aircraft before. Oh well, at least our pilots don't have names so we can't become attached to them.
The science team complete their research into EMP cannons, which is good. But we can't build any due to (say it with me) lack of elerium. Which is bad. Look how unhappy Dr Shen is about it. Right there with you, Dr Shen.
Council report for this month rolls in.
Man what's got the USA so upset? Everyone else is cool. Oh, right... gigantic spaceship left free to terrorise and abuse their citizenry. My bad.
A few days later another UFO is detected, this time a little teeny scout ship. As is my preference, the vets get a break on easy missions and less experienced troops are sent out to try and rack up some kills. So it's a full-squaddie team going on this one. Go get us some elerium, guys!

Operation Brutal Pyre
November 4th 23:48 USA
Sq. Escutcheon, Sq. Thirteen. Sq. Fearghaill, Sq. Sticks, Sq. Nickety, Sq. Vulgarity
Sq. Thirteen: Tangoes sighted!
Sq. Fearghaill: Shit, they disappeared.
Sq. Thirteen: They must be on the other side of this rise. Just keep advancing, and be ready in case one does a suicide run around the corner.
Sq. Vulgarity: I'm going to advance and get a better look. I don't want these guys flanking us.
{plasma pistol shots}
Sq. Vulgarity: Well, found one! No sign of his buddies though.
Sq. Thirteen: Nickety, can you get a better look?
Sq. Nickety: No problem.
Sq. Nickety: Still can't see them. But our friend here is mind-melded with someone, and if I had to guess I'd say they're about... ten, fifteen metres north.
Sq. Thirteen: I can work with that. Frag out!

Sq. Vulgarity: Bingo. That's two down.

Sq. Escutcheon: Guess not.
Sq. Vulgarity: All right, nice clean start to the mission. Nobody's dead yet!

Sq. Sticks {laser pistol shots}
Sq. Sticks: That was a hit. I think. I'm not sure these things take much notice of pistol fire.
Sq. Thirteen: Damn, they're hunkered down good. Not sure a frontal assault is the brightest idea here. Vulgarity what say you and me go for the flank?
Sq. Vulgarity: Roger that.
Sq. Nickety: I have this weird facing a firing line feeling here. I'm repositioning.

Uhh, I mean @Brovid Hasselsmof of course.

November 4th 23:48 USA
Sq. Escutcheon, Sq. Thirteen. Sq. Fearghaill, Sq. Sticks, Sq. Nickety, Sq. Vulgarity
Sq. Thirteen: Tangoes sighted!
Sq. Fearghaill: Shit, they disappeared.
Sq. Thirteen: They must be on the other side of this rise. Just keep advancing, and be ready in case one does a suicide run around the corner.
Sq. Vulgarity: I'm going to advance and get a better look. I don't want these guys flanking us.
{plasma pistol shots}
Frag out!
{explosion}
Sq. Vulgarity: Bingo. That's two down.
Sq. Fearghaill: Nice job. Now get your ass into cover before the third shows up and shoots it off, Nickety.
Sq. Escutcheon: Speaking of - Fearghaill you have a tango moving up on your flank!
{plasma pistol shots}
Sq. Escutcheon: Nicely dodged. Let's see if he can do the same.
Sq. Escutcheon {laser sniper rifle fire}
Sq. Escutcheon: Guess not.
Sq. Vulgarity: All right, nice clean start to the mission. Nobody's dead yet!
Sq. Sticks: That's probably going to piss off a few of the guys in the betting pool back at base.
Sq. Nickety: I have eyes on the craft.
Sq. Thirteen: All right, let's form up and-
Sq. Sticks: Hostiles!
Sq. Sticks {laser pistol shots}
Sq. Nickety: Ah, that's much better.
