the thing about Republicans is that, if they actually believed in patriotism and freedom for all Americans that so espouse -- civil rights regardless of religion, skin-color, gender, sexual orientation, and the ability for women to not only choose what they do with their own body but also be equally treated in workplaces and etc. and believed in upholding those rights to the fullest extent regardless of what the 200+ year old constitution says -- then the Republican party would be a lot better off. I think we could actually move this country forward at a much better pace if we had two parties that differed on foreign policy and economic goals (both sides of the economist spectrum think fighting inequality should be the primary domestic concern right now, it's just a matter of what policy to put forward) because then we could actually have real live discussions on a lot of these issues and try to find compromises that will allow us to move forward.
but instead the Republican party is stuck in this cultural/social conservatism that is inherently racist, sexist, bigoted, and often downright disgusting with how they treat "other" people
fuck, at this point Reagan and Nixon were probably more liberal than any member of the post-dubya Republican party.
it's sad to me because I can't ever see myself not voting democrat because this party has, at least in my lifetime, always been far more patriotic and willing to uphold liberty than the Republicans. I think there's good reason to discuss and argue over foreign policy and economic issues because both things exist in incredibly dynamic systems with no easy answers at any given time, and I'd rather have a healthy Republican party that's willing to do that (sometimes I could even agree with given my economically conservative friends!) over this just awful, shameful party today.
Nah, I think it would be probably weirder to address them with sir or ma'am. Officer sounds natural.
Then again, the last thing I would want anyone to call me is Sir, so I'm maybe a bad case

I'm kind of glad that Chick-Fil-A is the one fast food chain to declare overt shitty religious ties, instead of one of the various other places I would actually regret never returning to.
In and out?

no
don't do this to me
Nah, they're cool. Their CEO is super Christian, which is why there are Bible verses printed on the bottoms of the cups. But she doesn't appear to have donated to any anti-gay groups or implemented any discriminatory policies. I remember a bunch of pretty frustrated articles during the Chick-fil-A kerfuffle about journalists who spent a lot of time looking into In-N-Out's stance on gay marriage and coming up dry.
It probably helps that In-N-Out is headquartered in California and Chick-fil-A is a Georgia company. Whole different set of regulations.

One of the things I realized over the past few years as I slowly distanced myself from evangelical Christianity is that you could probably put a lot of the blame for how modern Anerican Christianity acts at the feet of Paul.
Because when you look at Paul's letters, there's a theme of him telling people how Christians should act (and calling churches out for not being sufficiently Christian). And the stuff about hating gay people? You'll find that in Paul's letters, not the Gospel.
So I eventually just kinda decided that maybe I should put all the letters that came after the gospel in the "do not take too seriously" pile, because that's the point where you it's no longer Jesus' words but supposedly God "inspiring" people to say stuff Jesus totally would have said (but I guess didn't get around to for some reason?).
Of course once you start to question the integrity of the canon you also start to question which, if any, of the gospels are accurate and suddenly you're thinking "maybe agnosticism ain't so bad."
well and paul is kind of pretty important to christianity
jesus didn't say shit about his message being for anyone other than jewish people, paul was the one with the message that christianity is for everyone
plus even the things paul says against homosexuality and such are in the context of like, drug-fueled orgiastic pagan rituals and shit
committed monogamous homosexual relationships weren't really a visible part of paul's culture and he didn't really have anything to say about them as a result

Difference between w and trump: only one has committed war crimes and legalised torture
I know the present sucks but let's not light a candle for the man who ran the most racist presidential campaign ever or for the imbecile who invaded Iraq and let the economy implode in a way that had not happened since 1929?
Feel free to hold W and his team responsible for wars and their criminality but the most recent financial meltdown was over 20 years of bad policy and deregulation. They bear some responsibility but Clinton and Reagan do too.
I don't know much about his role in the Koran aside from that but if he's much like he is in the New Testament I have no idea where you'd get that he's the kind of guy who stabs people with spears.

I don't see how they kick out that segment of the base without
A. Massively restructuring primaries so that they can pick who votes (which isn't unheard of)
B. Killing a large enough part of their voter base that they submit to thirty years of unbroken Democrat rule
Which maybe they should do! Maybe it's worth it to bring back the party of Lincoln! It's a hard fucking sell for the people in the party though
I mean, it happened before. It's just candidate driven-- you can't be like "Hey guys, we aren't racist anymore, see ya!"
The south isn't majority R or majority D, it's just been majority racist for a while. It's racist enough that a 1948 third party political campaign put together with toothpaste and pine straw took 3 states off of both parties-- admittedly that third party run was helped a LOT by the black people not being able to vote, but the point stands.
Anyway by '64 white racists realized that Johnson and the democratic party wasn't a great friend of white racists and Barry Goldwater was at least a plausible friend of them, and the South started turning red ever since.
So if the democrats get some populist candidate who is mixed at best on social issues, moderately socialist, and sufficiently isolationist when it comes to foreign policy and/or trade, there's definitely a chance for the GOP to flip the script on that one.
It... really doesn't take much to piss off bigots. I mean I know you guys think you really hate Dick Cheney, but honestly you guys are extremely generous compared to the people who accuse him of being part of the gay agenda-- and directly responsible for gay marriage in the United States by failing to represent "the real America."
** extremely generous as in "not vitriolic"
double edit:
Even if you think W is the worst president ever, the difference between him and Trump is that one of them would ruin the world just for kicks. And it isn't W.

The part where you messed up was believing a word Glenn Beck says
Yeah, Glenn Beck is not a super good source. Before I peaced out from Mormonism, debunking Beck-isms was a routine subject of our Elder's Quorum lessons. The actual explicit theology about the End Times is that things are going to get way the hell worse, before Jesus comes down to run the show personally for a thousand years. There is no canon support for any prophecy regarding a Mormon Prophet-King.
The main reason Mormons got so giddy about Romney was that Mormonism still exists in a weird outsider position. I remember during Romney's run hearing a lot about JFK, and the shift in cultural attitudes towards Catholicism that his election kicked off. Most other Christian denominations flatly deny that Mormons are Christian at all, and even non-religious persons tend to assume that Mormons are more "cultish" than other Christians. And then there's the frankly horrifying early history of the church, which yielded a whole lot of Martyrs to venerate, and keep the feelings of being hated outcasts alive. Which... is pretty cultish, frankly. But that makes it extra disturbing that the persecution complex is one of the traits that seems to have echoed out the other direction, into American Christianity at large. There's way more cross-pollination than any denominations really want to admit right now.
For a group with a strong cultural memory of being driven out into the literal wilderness by a series of massacres, assassinations, and an actual Expulsion/Termination Order from the Governor of Missouri, contrasting all that with the possibility of a Mormon becoming President was kind of a "going back to the class reunion to show off how rich I am now" moment.
