Pokemon but it is a game designed to be somewhat challenging for adults rather than being designed to be easily beatable by young children.

Make the maps big enough that piloting a Light or a Medium actually has an advantage due to mobility (because you can get to the safe zones faster and earlier). Make sure there some incentive for using ammo-spending weapons (like ammo supply caches or something) instead of renewable lasers/PPCs (or gradually increase the heat of the map over time so that lasers get less effective in the later parts of the match). I could see it.

the mechwarrior 4 balance was pretty good, I felt

honestly what we're talking about is basically the solaris matches with a much bigger map but that was tons of fun so why not

ammo should be rare. It was a very important part of the balance in MW4, since with very few exceptions, you got no extra ammo. You can unleash a hell of a lot of damage with your autocannons, but every shot spent counts.

I'm not sure how or if looting should be part of it.

but anyway, easy repair and easy rearm should not be a thing. It cheapens the experience of every individual fight, makes them matter less.

honestly this is pokemon, but with no motherfucking hyper potions

as a kid, the one and only approach to a fight was grind the fuck out of those pokeymans

as an adult, I can't be arsed to do that, so now I'm using strategies and expending every pokemon I have to reduce stats a little and barely eke out a chance at victory and I have tons of fun in the battles because they're hard

and then the gym leader goes haha nope hyper potion

Nah, there isn't. Smash* is basically the same game as previous iterations.

    * Can also substitute Kingdom Hearts and any anime dating sim.

Battle royale game where you don't directly control your avatar and instead just give them vague plans and strategies for the custmizable AI to implement.

The avatars are cute creatures and it is actually just a monster raising sim with a battle royale skin.

I would love this so much. If it were a crunchy, fairly complete scripting language and you programmed a pair or a trio of little robots with different abilities, trying to get them to win a battle royale... I imagine it would be hard to prevent people from netdecking. There would have to be randomized /procedural stuff

VishNub Looks like most of the news over Alzheimer's last month was over the drug trials for the drug labeled as COR388 (which just finished Phase I FDA trials). I'm skeptical, but hopeful. The link between periodontal disease and Alzheimer's has been studied for the past decade, but it seems like a stretch that it could be causative. But if it is... I mean, seriously, that's huge news.

    The paper is here:
    http://advances.sciencemag.org/content/5/1/eaau3333

Dunno about the quality of Science Advances. It's a relatively new journal.

    Reading. Thanks.
    Hahnsoo1

Not through the article yet, but I'm kind of wondering if the causality is fully understood.

Well it's a Science sub journal, and those are generally good to very good, but yes. And it's open access, which is interesting in its own right.

    The article is very interesting.

It's a (well supported) hypothesis that essentially: a bacteria normally associated with dental disease is able to colonize the brain, where it secretes several proteases which, among other things, directly and indirectly cause the accumulation of the amyloids associated with AD. At the same time they've developed an apparently (though they're hiding this data), very effective inhibitor of those proteases (that also kills the bacteria by ?mechanism?. Treatment with their inhibitor reduces amyloid load.

They don't have data on neurodegenerative outcomes (ie. mouse behavior studies), nor do they claim that this scenario explains all AD cases.

It does fill in/explain a lot of the oddities of alzheimers progression and origin though. It's certainly interesting. I hope it works, obviously.

Very cool. I wonder if I can get my boss to invite one of these people for a seminar. It's all published/patented now, which is unusual.

I really want to make a game where you have an companion that’s driven entirely by learning AI. Like those experiments in creating an AI that can learn to play a game given minimal direction, only it’s a bit easier because you still have a human player to drag it along through higher level constructs.

The dream is that by the end of the game it has such a mastery of the combat system that it goes all fist of the north star on every enemy onscreen then exploits the movement system to clip through a solid wall and open a locked door for you.

A big part of this was just how well designed and animated all the characters are. And that's a very good way to inspire fan artists to pick up and run with those characters.
