I tried to pace myself but I just binged to episode 13. It's interesting that the show feels a lot more...light hearted? with the introduction of Asuka. Like there is still interesting stuff being revealed slowly but it seems less focused than the first 7 episodes and more like a regular mech anime.
However, this kinda implies that the only translation Khara cared about was the English one, because believe you me, a lot of other languages translated a bunch of things in very different ways. Which, again, is a posibility, but rather adds to the fuckmuppet points.
IIRC it's been confirmed that the English translation was the only one (save for the Italian one I think?) translated from the original Japanese. The others were translated from the English translation.
And yet the Spanish translation has a lot of points where the lines are translated very much not like the English translation. So either someone in the translation team went "...the heck is this" and looked up the original source material, or I don't know, man.
Okay but is that how the japanese line is written, or was that a flourish of the old english translation?
People keep saying they changed it from X to Y but really X and Y are both being separately derived from Z
No, it's in English in the original japanese. It's in the NERV logo. It was at no point in Japanese. And unlike a lot of the English in the series, this one is no Engrish, it actually works perfectly as is!
I thought the ending felt a little rushed because it had a cool set up for all of the different episode styles and discordant plotlines that they could've gotten into a little more, but altogether it was still fine and hilarious. Kinda bummed it was only 26 episodes. I'm hoping the "may be continued?" at the end is an actual "to be continued" someday.
On to rewatch Samurai Champloo to finish out my Watanabe run through. After that I dunno I'll probably never watch a goddamn anime ever again.
Speaking of mecha anime, anyone else watched/watching Space Battleship Tiramisu?
I just went through the first six episodes (they clock in at 6m each) and it's... interesting. Super Ace Pilot only feels comfortable where he can be alone, in his cockpit. They're definitely trying for some kind of comedy, mostly absurd situational stuff... just with the backdrop of almost entirely in the cockpit of a mech.
edit: There is some nudity so far, in case anyone needs that warning, but it's entirely the main dude's butt. The female pilot introduced a bit later is dressed about how you'd expect, though.
Ok I found the ending of EoE weirder than the original end, if anything
Also I feel like watching it right after the end of the series had some crazy tonal whiplash
Also I think I need to lie down for a bit now
the important thing to know about End of Evangelion is that it was made in reaction to fans hating the ending of the original show and being disgusting otaku creeps in general
Also can I just say that I feel that as someone who's understanding of Eva for years was based on its extensive merchandising, now that I've watched it, I find the whole concept of wanting any Eva merchandise utterly bewildering.
Not because it's bad, mind you, but because it almost feels antithetical to the nature of the show as I perceive it.

would you mind explaining that a little? I never thought of Eva as particularly anti-consumer.

It's less of an anti-consumer thing, and more of the series beating the viewer over the head over and over again that despite giant mecha being cool in theory, holy shit is it kind of a fucked up terrible thing to have literal teenagers piloting these nightmare machines in practice.
Like, I could not look at a lunchbox of Rei without feeling sad. Which, maybe I'm weird, but I don't want my lunchbox to depress me.

To me it basically feels like the achewood 'I'm the guy who sucks - plus I've got depression' shirt
Ah gotcha. I think I bought some of the robots when I was younger, but the real draw for me was the manga and well, this was before the internet, so I would stay up all night and...
try to translate it with 3 different softcover dictionaries. I had one that was just for Kanji and I remember making lists of all the different meanings “Rei” could have.

Devil Blade definitely has a wonky pacing, but Im still enjoying the show. I would propably start reading the manga if not for the fact that we still have te second cour before us.
I really appreciate Tanjiro being a main protagonist because he is a good person, not him being a good person because he is a main hero so he should be good by default.

that polygon article from a few pages ago is a good read for those who have finished both the series and movie

this is like one of those situations where you do a machine translation of a phrase back and forth and end up with a different phrase or gibberish because of lack of understanding of the context, where the context here is just looking at the original english phrase in NERV's logo

I mean,
This is every Gundam show ever made not named G or Build *something*.
In the original Gundam, Amuro is a barely responsive mess who isn't eating, stays awake for days, and never really recovers, even into other shows.
Hell, early in Victory gundam
An enemy soldier sees the gundam is piloted by a like, 13 year old, has a mental breakdown and blows himself up with a grenade while sobbing.
Even a more lighthearted shows like ZZ ends with
Judea being so disgusted with his commanding officers and the Federation that he punched Bright Noah in the face and fucks off to Jupiter for the rest of his life.
But they sure make a lot o gundam models.

why do you think his dialogue is a reference to that famous line from pippa passes, other than that the old translation made it to be
So your suggestion is that this is the one time they weren't referencing Paradise Lost or other famous Judea Christian stuff, they just strung words together at random that one time? And used that random string as a logo? That strikes me as unlikely. In the extreme.
