If I recall correctly, something like this was mooted during the Rudd-Gillard years as well, but I think it went away? Or was it more recent? My memory of it is not superb.
Anyway, I got no good things to say about this shit. This is exactly the kind of tactics kleptocrats and oligarchs pull in less developed countries to keep things cosy for themselves. There are already requirements for party registration requiring 500 members (and AEC does review parties that may not be maintaining 500 members), and I don't see why this number should be tripled.
And the name thing... Yeah, I get it, the 'New Liberals' failed in imagination when naming their party but 'liberal' is a concept in political science. And the numpties in the major Liberal party right now, frankly, suck terribly at actually being liberal - the (Federal) party's been in the thrall of loony conservatives for years. It's total shit if they want to try to monopolise that word. They could garner marginally more sympathy from me if they actually had any claim to representing liberal thought, but they don't, so I'll say they should go take a long walk off a short pier.

So I'm guessing that we're in for at least 3 weeks lockdown here in Auckland.
A lot of these new places of interest are just too close to my family for comfort. I almost went to the same food store on the same day, but ended up going to a different one.
And one of the bars on the list is the one literally across the street from my office which is frequented regularly by work mates.
One thing that seems to be our current downfall is going to be the ages of the confirmed cases. The majority of them are all in their 20's, and so mostly unvaccinated. Which means this is going to spread quite aggressively I think.
There's one case that's been identified that has links to the border, but isn't part of this cluster. Which they think means that the person they were calling Case A might not actually be the start of the chain.

Not really. I mean, there's a sizeable group because we've seen them do their dumb protests, but it's not exactly a mainstream thing here. I haven't seen much resistance to wearing masks outside of the the usual conspiracy groups. Same with vaccines - anyone I've spoken to who is hesitant on vaccines is more just hesitant on getting Astrazeneca than hesitant on vaccines in general. It's all more general annoyance.
What we're seeing is the usual dumb rule breakers who think 'if I just do this it couldn't possibly do any harm', and then it does, and then it's everyone else's fault.

With a bit of "I have to work or my family and I starve to death, so I'm going to work with this cold anyway" (Can't fully blame them for this one)
You know, capitalism. The places where its exploding the most are the places where work from home isn't a thing for the majority of the workforce there.

Part of the problem with Australia's response (can't speak for NZ) has been that our vaccine procurement and rollout has been... clusterfuck is not sufficient.

"All in on Pfizer! Wait, what do you mean that the timeline is backed up because other countries put in orders well ahead of us?"
I've been literally trying for months, but because of my work schedule and understaffing, I kind of need to do a walk-in when I get a couple nights off work, and walk-ins for my age/employment group were open for literally a week before being closed for various reasons. First for aged care workers, then the age brackets jumped back up due to limited supply, and is now at 60+.
It's been a fucking debacle from the start, and isn't improving.
EDIT - I checked again, and all the slots are at least 12 days out. Except one for tomorrow. Snatched! But that's kinda the issue. If you're not lucky, and not completely flexible, you get screwed.
But also, Delta in particular penetrates the vaccine so yeah I want to get it once it’s available for my group, but it’s not the silver bullet a lot of people think it is

Only partially. Most studies show like a 10-20% drop against infection, which given that the MRNA vaccines start very high to begin with still isn't bad. And so far little to no loss of protection against death or serious illness. So half silver half lead?
Ironically delta kinda makes the vax into the opposite of what was expected. Helps the individual a lot but only helps the community a little. In fact we should expect more unnoticeable transmission in future as vaxed carriers (like the nurse) are more likely to be asymptomatic. And it'll help the virus spread without detection as people don't behave in a safe manner if they don't feel sick (IE are asymptomatic). Which is a bit worrying but at the end of the day the solution is more people getting vaccinated.

Yeah it doesnt penetrate it that much and still means you arent going to die or even get extremely sick unless you are already very frail.
If most people are vaccinated it will work.
To give you some context for all these numbers the flu vaccine is 40 -60% effective.
These vaccines are ridiculously effective. Even the small drop of effectiveness against delta is still almost twice as effective as the lower range of the flu vaccine.
Morninglord on

Big things are that it's confirmed to be Delta from NSW, appears to have come from a recent returnee from Syndey. 11 new cases in the the community today, 21 total. 12 confirmed to be part of the cluster, 8 they're not sure about but have strong links to the cluster, 1 that's not linked and is a border-related case. There's 8 new cases in MIQ, 2 historical.
So, so far so good? No word as of yet on extensions to the lockdown, which surprises me. I'm expecting auckland at least to end up extended to two weeks total just to try and help burn the virus out. Unsure if we'll see the rest of the country get extended - i bet yes if there's any sign it's gotten out of auckland/coramandel.
The part that stands out to me is the vaxxed spreading the disease without symptoms. We're in an interesting transition between "some people vaxed" and "enough people vaxed". And I expect that outbreaks that do not have obvious lines of transmission will become the norm as more people are vaccinated. And since those kind of outbreaks necessitate high level lockdowns, we'll see more high level lockdowns until we reach a satisfactory % of vaxed population.

Gonna go get my brain poked.
While I wasn't technically at any of the location of interest at the same time, I was pretty damn close to a few.

Ugh that sounds not fun.
Brain poking went fine.
Now to isolate at least until we get results. 24-72 hours.
And yeah, they're calling the whole mall close contacts apparently, so getting a test was right.
After bitching about unavailability last night, I saw there was an open slot.
I got my jab of Pfizer an hour ago.
Still waiting for the celluar connectivity, is that only after the second shot?

First for aged care workers, then the age brackets jumped back up due to limited supply, and is now at 60+.
It's been a fucking debacle from the start, and isn't improving.
EDIT - I checked again, and all the slots are at least 12 days out. Except one for tomorrow. Snatched! But that's kinda the issue. If you're not lucky, and not completely flexible, you get screwed.
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better

Only partially. Most studies show like a 10-20% drop against infection, which given that the MRNA vaccines start very high to begin with still isn't bad. And so far little to no loss of protection against death or serious illness. So half silver half lead?
Yeah it doesnt penetrate it that much and still means you arent going to die or even get extremely sick unless you are already very frail.
If most people are vaccinated it will work.
To give you some context for all these numbers the flu vaccine is 40 -60% effective.
These vaccines are ridiculously effective. Even the small drop of effectiveness against delta is still almost twice as effective as the lower range of the flu vaccine.

Gonna go get my brain poked.
While I wasn't technically at any of the location of interest at the same time, I was pretty damn close to a few.
And I've been coughing today.
So, brain poking I go.

I hope you have better luck than I did last time I was brain poked. My GP successfully poked, but then dropped the sample stick, so I had to be poked a second time in the other nostril. He wouldn't stop apologizing the whole time.
Brain poking went fine.
Now to isolate at least until we get results. 24-72 hours.
And yeah, they're calling the whole mall close contacts apparently, so getting a test was right.
I need to get another test by 27 August as well.

I got my jab of Pfizer an hour ago.
Still waiting for the celluar connectivity, is that only after the second shot?
so i'm on hold to get to healthline to make sure i don't have to do much more than what I already did by getting a test today. and not leaving the house.
when i called, there were 344 calls in the Queue. and they said 45 minutes. We're a tad past that, but i'm getting closer!
