These days it's less "inching closer to fascism" and more like "walking at a leisurely stroll towards fascism"
Which, to me, makes it even more wild that people want to sit around and respect norms and procedures, or treat this as some sort of team sport.
It’s honestly really frustrating watching US politics, on two levels. Firstly, I don’t want to see anyone suffer under the boot heel of fascism (see also: India). Secondly, with the tentacles of the US reaching all over the globe, meaningful socialist changes at home will be fucked with ruthlessly and unceasingly until such a time as the US is aligned with socialist outcomes, or cannot effectively project power to the other side of the globe
He very much is a Nazi, but at this point I think many Democrats are pretty sure that he's just going to get destroyed by Trump in a debate because while Desantis is hateful and effective in his hate, which are two things the Republican party loves, he also has the personality of a wet paper bag and many Trump cultists hate his guts just for existing in the same breath as him.
It would have been great if the Florida Democratic party hadn't have rolled over entirely for him, it's not like he won his first term by a landslide. It's awful to think of what he could achieve with a national platform, but he's doing plenty of awful shit now that can and should be actively fought
I am extremely concerned about DeSantis, but I honestly don't think I can do much about him from literally the opposite corner of the country, so for the sake of my own mental health, I'm trying to focus on the things I need and want to do in my own life and community and quietly hoping that he and Trump end up destroying each other or something.
Is is great how obvious it is that community notes is never going to be trusted for the same reason as a lot of fact checkers that split hairs on certain things and just ignore all context
Absolutely nothing in that note contradicts the assertion about the second amendment
It's not great that the Democratic Party saw a bunch of Left leaning amendments pass in Florida when Biden won the presidency and has voted Democrat in my lifetime and then when it came to run somebody against DeSantis chose a former Republican with a milqetoast personality to go against the future of the Republican Party.

Trump has already started lashing out at DeSantis, and it's pretty funny in a let them fight kinda way
But like no matter what happens there, the Democratic party are world champion class losers and I don't doubt their ability to fuck it up no matter who the GOP runs against them
The Florida dem party is the worst in the country, this isn’t a recent phenomenon, it’s always been that way for as long as I’ve been paying attention to them, which is since around 2009….I would bet a fiver on them being awful going back to at least 2000, too
It seems to me that Florida Dems are terrified of the The Villagesification of the state instead of looking around going “huh, we’re like the 3rd most dense and urban state in the country and progressive policies individually poll as well here as you’d expect given that” and then Charlie Crist gets to lose both a senate and governor’s race as a dem after being pushed out as a Republican
The one year the Florida Dems went with the candidate that you’d expect to appeal to the many millions of dem demographic voters in the state, he lost in a squeaker after some obvious election fuckery by the Republican SOS and after many elections of neglect by the dem party, and the lesson they took away was “welp, see, can’t win here, our plan of enriching ourselves as the comfortable minority party was right all along”
Edit-tion- working on a brain theory about the fash being most fashy in a state where they control everything despite the electorate containing so many of their political opponents- that latent insecurity is an incredible organizing and radicalizing force
Desantis also just enacted a revenge bill against Disney for doing the bare minimum and putting out a statement against that don't say gay bill. He's putting in a state control to oversee Disney's self controlled district
What I want to know is what makes the Democratic Party of Florida different from say, the Democratic Party of Georgia, which has actually turned a state that was fairly solidly Republican into a real battleground state.

To explain this somewhat more, when Disneyworld was being built they basically said "hey we need an absurd amount of our own municipal infrastructure. We will pay for it if you let us run it instead of having the local governments pay for it given that would bankrupt them and make it impossible to do our thing."
DeSantis's original suggestion was to end this special setup and fold Disney into the local municipalities... putting them on the hook for $1 billion+ in debt servicing for all that infrastructure, plus the costs of maintenance. Because that idea was obviously stupid after even a seconds worth of thought, within a few days they changed their strategy to keeping Disney's special status, but letting the Florida government appoint people to control that district instead of letting Disney do it themselves. It's an extremely stupid move that has absolutely no value besides allowing him/Florida to directly fuck with Disneyworld whenever they want without the need to pass legislation.
E: You could make a principled argument that Disney having its own little corporate fiefdom with privatized municipal services is inherently a problem, but the cat's so far out of the bag on that that resolving it would, y'know, require loading billions in debt to the local governments to take things back from Disney or doing a very, very long term wind-down that nobody actually wants.

i am surprised that disney isn't just using their immense control over florida politicians to kill this, as it seems like a worst of both worlds situation for them.

Reportedly they tried to kill it and nothing doing.
i guess fucked up culture wars somehow jumped bowing to their corporate overlords in republican mental hierarchy.
they forgot that the culture wars were not supposed to be real and just something they used to distract voters.
Only need to raise campaign money if there's an opposition party and there isnt one in Florida. Disney isnt ever going to leave either so their levers are limited.
The impetus for all this was DeSantis and the legislature finally being overtly shitty enough that Disney had to go "we're not giving money to these guys anymore" for the sake of PR, so their usual leverage is diminished a bit. DeSantis can't back down on his culture war shit because that's his path to the national stage so that takes priority over his re-election funds.
Apparently the original Disney district thing actually gave them the authority to build their own airport and even a nuclear power plant if they wanted to
I kind of wish Disney had built their own nuclear plant, that's hilarious

So this thread that got boosted onto my feed succinctly puts a lot of my frustration with Liberalism as a practiced ideology in a handy little column of sorts
One thing I absolutely cannot stand about many liberals is the way a big switch turns off in their hearts the second that a Democrat becomes President.
A lot of liberals just stop caring about (and stop showing up for) just about every major struggle during a Democratic Presidency. It’s Activist Hibernation.
The brief moments liberals posture as caring about a systemic issue are only when Republicans are engaging in some fuckshit on that issue, whilst ignoring the fact that Democrats are often just as complicit. This hypocritical selective outrage serves as fuel for the rightwing.
Notice how a ton of liberals just went dead silent on ICE concentration camps, police violence, climate crisis, capitalist exploitation and US imperialism the second Biden got into office?
Liberals need to wake the hell up.
Over 100m gallons of toxic fuel remain in the US Navy’s leaking Red Hill facility, continuing to contaminate O’ahu’s aquifer.
East Palestine is contaminated with vinyl chloride.
People in Jackson and Flint STULL lack access to clean water.
The pigs are trying to build a Cop City in Atlanta.
The Biden admin has already approved 6,430 permits for oil and gas drilling, outpacing the Trump admin.
The Israeli occupation is bombing Gaza again.
The Pentagon continues to escalate tensions with both Russia & China.
To all the liberals waiting for the next Republican ghoul to become President before reactivating themselves: we can’t wait until 2024.
The fight is here.
The fight is right fucking now.
For so many liberals, at least the way they behave so much of this shit is entirely team sport bullshit, they’ll only get fired up about the cause and issues of social justice when their team is the one out of power, and when their team is in power, and even when their team is actively an enemy against social justice, they go radio silent, or, when people critique their side’s leadership for complicity in these injustices will then finally step up to bat against the critics, because god forbid you ever critique the leaders of Liberalism, that just empowers the right wing!
It all just reeks of being utterly performative and reflective of personal comforts and safety from injustice and it’s so fucking exhausting that the only time they want to even appear to care, let alone show up, is when they can fucking dunk on a Republican with it, despite social injustice long being a frankly bipartisan value in America.
What I want to know is what makes the Democratic Party of Florida different from say, the Democratic Party of Georgia, which has actually turned a state that was fairly solidly Republican into a real battleground state.
I think a lot of it comes to Atlanta growing so much. Georgia just stopped looking like what a deep red state looks like.

Not even just Atlanta, either. I work in Rockdale county and lived in Newton, about an hour outside of Atlanta, and both of those went blue. Those two counties also have/had multiple film studios at the time of the election, and more being built. It's why MTG has rabidly attacked the film industry, she knows that areas with major film production tend to become more progressive as people move to where the work is.

Wanna know why Georgia turned blue? It's because we now have a get out the vote network that is the envy of every state. We knock on doors and talk to neighbors for weeks then drive people to polling stations. And the shit stank ain't gone until we get rid of kemp and his cronies.
Georgia has a weird blend of being the hub of several industries and educational resources while avoiding being the kind of place a rich person would want to take over

Disney World didn't need the municipal district to function. Universal Studios doesn't have it, and they're able to operate just fine. The reason they set up the municipal district is that the original plan for Disney World was for Walt Disney to run his own experimental corporate town, but then he died and everyone else in the company was like, "what the fuck was he talking about." They're entrenched enough now that canceling the municipal district entirely would cause a lot of fucking problems, though

Just off the top of my head have all been cited for violating the law by voting in Florida while residing in another state
Florida by all rights should be a battleground state, but the Democratic party is astonishingly incompetent
My implication is it’s widespread and those are just hilarious examples
