So USWNT were a post width away from being sent home?
Can't wait for Sweden
Edit: fuck, 2am PST? Well at least it's Sunday morning and not Tuesday morning. Still....oof
Yeah its not great. Though they outshot Portugal 17(6) to 6(0), Vietnam 28(7)-0(0) and Netherlands 18(4)-5(1). Their xG is 8.0(3rd), xGA 0.6(t-1st), xGD/90 is +2.46(3rd). Both 3rds are behind Japan and Spain, who got to light up Zambia and Costa Rica.
The finishing is just poor + maybe some bad luck, but that will kill you in a single elimination tournament. Also only 1 meaningful sub again.(The 84th and 90+6 minute ones don't really count).
Yeah, it's weird because they're not playing poorly, they're just not converting on really good chances.
Actually today's game was kind of bad with how many times a Portugal player would slip past the defense. They would manage to stop them from getting great shots out of it for the most part, but there were several times where it definitely looked like Portugal was going to convert with a goal.
My dad (a goalie in his school days) is lamenting the lack of availability of a proper Earps shirt. Apparently Nike are refusing to make goalie shirts for the public to buy, but of course only women goalies. This feels like it should be a bigger scandal than it is.
I'm "merely" lamenting the sold-out-ness of a proper England WT shirt my size... they must make about twelve of the things. Apparently they learned nothing from the Euros last year. Thinking I'd be down for a Kelly or Russo shirt, but it's all academic if I can't fit into the sodding thing.
And Italy is out. First time for South Africa to make the last 16.
Sweden meanwhile continues their walkthrough
That Italy own goal was reallllly bad. I get it, it's a big stage, mental mistakes and all that. But geez.
+1

Yeah. It happened right in front of us and we were all just "WTF just happened?!".
Then the second half unfolded and the crowd was insane. Great game to be at.
Except for the cold. It actually started hailing briefly at one point. And the players were absolutely freezing waiting on that VAR check that went on and on after Italy's second, desperately flailing arms and running on the spot trying to keep warm while someone in an indoor booth sat and watched footage over and over.
That's unbelievably cool. Your new name is cool guy. Let's have sex.

Klaksvik from the Faroe Islands are guaranteed group stage European football after knocking out Ferencvaros of Hungary and Hacken of Sweden in the Champions League qualifiers
we better get our shit together or Sweden will send us home on Sunday
hopefully they can figure out why we've been sucking so badly and make the adjustments

And Lavelle is out too because of that yellow card? Can anyone explain that? I saw the highlight reel and even the commentators were surprised by the yellow card. I'm still kinda newish to football so I still don't quite get what is a foul/not a foul/yellow card/red card. the whole "you're not kicked out for this game, but you are for the next game" thing didn't make sense to me either.

If you get two yellow cards in one game it becomes a red card, a send off, and an automatic one game suspension.
If you accumulate two yellow cards over different games (one card each game) you stay in each game, but you are suspended for the next game. They don't have to be consecutive games, it could be game 1 and 3, or 1 and 4, or 2 and 3, etc, once you get that second yellow you will be out for the following game.
All yellow card accumulation is wiped out after the quarterfinal, so if you make it to the semifinal and get one yellow you won't be suspended for the final.
As for what is actually is a foul/yellow/red?
Lol
LMAO
No really though, there are guidelines, but also plenty of "that should have been a yellow/red" complaints when one wasn't given, or "never a yellow/red" after someone gets carded.
In the case of Rose the argument is she was shoved by a Portuguese player and that's why she ran into/took out the player she did, so it shouldn't be a yellow on her, as she didn't have any intent and was pushed into the position. But again, reference Lol, LMAO for consistency in refereeing.
She mistimed a lunge that missed the ball and hit a player. That is a yellow all day long. Thats assuming she was lunging and not going down to get a foul after feeling the slight push on her back, also a yellow.
ahh I remember her other yellow card from the previous game so that at least makes more sense. Didn't know they had rules about accumulating penalties across multiple games till now though so I learned something new today. Thanks

also worth noting that the yellow card accumulation rules vary from competition to competition
in the PL i think it's 5 yellow cards in the first 19 games of the season leads to a one game suspension, in the CL its three yellow cards between the group stages and the semi finals
its kinda all over the place tbh, you'll never be able to keep track of it. If you watch the prematch commentary when they're showing the teams, they'll usually have a yellow card next to the players name if a yellow card in this match will lead to a suspension in the next one and the commentators will mention it every time they're involved
The accumulation rules vary per tournament and/or season, for example in the NWSL season it's 5 yellow cards accumulated that leads to a suspension, but there are more games in a season than a cup, so it's usually worthwhile to check the specifics of whatever format you're watching.
As for Rose, it's possible it was a completely justified card, I only half watched the lowlights to see how close they came to getting dumped by Portugal and that's what I recall the commentator saying might be her argument against the yellow, but they're hardly unbiased.
However, I don't think it's controversal to say that there are often arguments about missed calls or overly harsh cards, especially for *insert my team here* which never gets the call when fouled, compared to *insert rival team here* that gets away with murder every game and never sees as much as yellow.
Edit DAMN YOU TAV, FOR YOUR SUPERIOR SPEED AND KNOWLEDGE OF FOOTBALL.
Just rewatched the challenge. She was definitely shoved by the first player but dunno if it really mattered, she did go down and her legs do collide with the 2nd player, but only barely. If anything the 2nd player's knee goes into Lavelle's side which probably hurt more than the leg collision.

No clear plan for finishing, just using their overall (slightly now) average superior skill levels to beat their defender(s) and create hero-ball shots that sail wide
They have an xG differential of like 3 per match based on the number of opportunities but haven’t found the net
Andonovski is cluelessly chalking it up to bad luck and relying on a reversion to mean, but the issue is he can’t find an effective lineup, make effective substitutions, or provide effective tactics
I will say the reffing has felt a little all over the place with what is or isn't a card in the US matches I have watched. That is just the game, but it has stuck out more to me for whatever reasons. This includes stuff that favored the US but meh. The team's level is the much, much bigger problem so I ain't worrying about it.

One thing that has stood out to me watching this tournament is how bad the positioning of the refs at FWWC23 is. And I don't mean 'too far away/not in the right place to see the action', I mean watching this tournament I've seen a really high number of instances where the ref has been in the middle of the play; either getting hit, blocking a pass, or being right where a player needs to move. It's been multiple occasions, in multiple games, and sure it happens now and then, but in this tournament it just seems to have been excessively high and I haven't been able to work out why.

It did not go to extra time. No regrets.

France vs Morocco
All three are matchups of former colonizers with countries that they once colonized.
TBF, most matches England play fit that description.
