For what it's worth, what we see in the trailer really looks like it's some kind of vertical slice of a tutorial level. Metroid Prime 3 had a fairly similar thing going on with its start, and only branched out into the less combat-heavy exploration once you'd gotten off that first tutorial planet.
(But also it's a vertical slice made for a trailer, so who knows where or how or if it'll show up in the actual game.)
I don’t want to make a mountain out of a molehill, but I just wasn’t “wowed” by that trailer. Metroid Dread’s trailer wowed me with its action and themes. This seems like I’m watching an unflattering version of Metroid Prime 1. I’m happy to let them cook awhile longer, but I’m a little disappointed that this is our first look at the game.

Yea, the reaction form some just seems bizarre to me. We saw like a few seconds of gameplay and it looks amazing, even with the horrible youtube compression.
Really wish we could have moved past the "metroid prime" name, since 1. The name has a lot of, probably unfair given 2 and 3, expectations behind it and 2. We killed the Metroid Prime. She's dead.
Just call it Metroid Beyond. But we can't do that these days because the Metroid Prime name is popular and so we got to trot it out whenever possible.

Technically you are correct, but I've always figured they call it this due to the fact that so much of what happens revolves around the Space Pirates study of the Metroid Prime. Phazon and the mutations and experiments caused by it were all due to the effect the Metroid Prime had on the Talon IV ecosystem. On top of that, Dark Samus is a new living being caused by the merging of the Metroid Prime DNA and Samus' DNA. She kind of carries what is left of the Metroid Prime in her. I know she died at the end of MP3, but I wouldn't be surprised if Sylex has something to do with recovering what was left of her after Samus destroyed her and the Mother Brain unit.
It looks exactly like Metroid Prime 1 but at higher fidelity.
Which is really not great 20 years later. Nintendo is usually known for its innovation, even within franchises. Even Metroid Dread seemed like more of a leap forward. I guess it could be misleading, but this is what they chose to show us. It doesn't seem great.

So the name does make sense in a narrative way.
I'm not sure you can say the name makes sense when you're basing your justification on it on unfounded speculation.
And I was referring to Dark Samus when I said "She's dead." as Dark Samus is Metroid Prime. I wasn't just talking about the end of MP1. The Prime Metroid, as Dark Samus, exists in all three of the non-spinoffs. (Spinoffs which probably also shouldn't have been named "Metroid Prime" imo.)

I was mainly saying it made sense for MP 1 - 3 as I thought you were meaning the Prime Metroid died in 1. As for MP4, it is just speculation but I guess we'll see if there is a reason for it when it comes out. Speculation is all we got!
But complaining they named it that is all from speculation as well.
Check and match!
Edit: Just messing with you...you probably know that but just wanted to make sure.

Ah, I was wondering who this strange new character was. I hadn't kept up with any spin-offs.
Nah he’s an apprentice, but he does go to work with electricians between college. Sometimes you gotta condense a life story to make funny post.

I think MP4 looks great given the limitations of the system it's on. Also it appears to be 60FPS which is something the new Zelda didn't do.
I really wish someone would create a FP Metroid but with actual next-gen technology but no one seems to want to try.
Makes me sad that two series I really like either go a huge amount of time with no content (Metroid) or switch to a model that doesn't really do it for me (Zelda).

Pet metroids? ...petroids.
Well, you see, Sylux was introduced in Metroid Prime Hunters (2006, DS) as one of the titular Hunters - with a strong grudge against the Galactic Federation and Samus for unknown reasons.
His ship then showed up in the ending of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (2007, Wii; also 2015, WiiU), as some sort of hint that he'd appear in the next game.
He also showed up in a post-credits stinger for Metroid Prime: Federation Force (2016, 3DS), where he hatches and steals a Metroid egg from the Galactic Federation.
Sylux being the villain of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (2025, Switch) is a long time coming, in other words.
I really wish someone would create a FP Metroid but with actual next-gen technology but no one seems to want to try.
Nintendo has their first party franchises on harder lockdown than any other company. There's no way Metroid, or Mario, or Zelda, or Animal Crossing will ever be on any console/hardware other than Nintendo made hardware. And Nintendo has proven time and again that they are not interested in pushing the envelope with cutting edge tech. They are interested in hitting that $200-$250 price point and selling a shitload of units. The install base of the Switch is absolutely huge. They have sold over 100 million consoles.
I guarantee you that when the Switch successor comes out in '25 or '26 or whenever, it will not be cutting edge next-gen tech. It will be low to mid range tech that they can bundle and sell for cheap. That has always been their way.
It's not that "no one seems to want to try" so much as it is "it's impossible to make a cutting edge first party Nintendo game because the hardware won't allow it."
This is not a matter of trying or not trying. This is a matter of doing what is feasible on the hardware that Nintendo creates. If you want a Metroid game that is cutting edge by today's standards in 2024, you will probably need to wait until a new Nintendo console drops in 2034.

Trailer did nothing to set this apart from the 3 that came before it. I have to say it's a little baffling they've spent what, 7 years and this is all they have to show for it?
I'm hopeful there will be something incredible that we just haven't seen yet, but man this makes a pretty stale first impression. Maybe they just don't know how to cut a trailer? Who knows.
I have absolutely no idea what folks are talking about? I just rewatched it and it looks exactly what I hoped it would have. Did MP3 look that much better than MP1? What are we looking for here? Bloom? HDR? You guys do know the Switch is old as fuck and was outdated when it released. I think the trailer is fine if a bit short.
I have to say it's a little baffling they've spent what, 7 years and this is all they have to show for it?
They did scrap the entire project like 3 or 4 years ago and have to start from scratch with it.
Yup. It was originally contracted out to a third party developer. And after like 3 years of work, the internal reviews at Nintendo were really bad. They pulled the licensing/contract from the third party, and moved the development back in-house to a first party developer.
Here the trailer sets up the game right from start with the wordless introduction of EMMI and showcases that this is going to be a new and unique experience in Metroid: needing to run from an invincible enemy. The first half sets that theme of 'dread' with the music and gameplay shown. The second half shows off the returning mechanics, the snappy gameplay, and shows some new unique power-ups we haven't seen. This is a good trailer, and that's in no small part because it's showing off a good game.
I'll admit, I'm not super invested in the lore of Metrioid, so the story elements aren't as appealing to me, but the trailer still does a great job of building hype by introducing the basic story background and emphasizing that this game will be more story focused and that there will be multiple characters involved. It then shows some new gamplay; IIRC, this is the first Metroid game on the Wii and I would think they would have put more emphasis on the motion controls, but it does what it needs to. Overall, this is a decent trailer for a great game.
This trailer opens up with "This is a Metroid game: recognize this iconic intro theme?" and then what? We're responding to a Space Pirate attack? Okay, but what's going on? Why is this exciting? Then the gameplay it shows off is that the morph-ball and missiles are there, and so is the lock-on and side-dodge mechanics from Prime 1, which were fine 20+ years ago but seem quaint at best now. And then the big reveal... Metroids? Okay. Note exactly unexpected in a Metroid game. Yeah, they're behaving and there's that masked guy which might be a character from one of the portable titles. This isn't a good trailer. The only elements shown off appeal to nostalgia, and it's devoid of the new mechanics/experiences I can expect in this next installation of the series.
Not to project, but when I think "This looks like Prime I all over again." I'm not complaining about the graphics. I'm complaining that this doesn't seem to have anything new or even updated from the gameplay I've already experienced multiple times. That's what's worrying about this trailer.
I'd expect a deeper and more hype trailer down the road. They might not have had any of the extra cool shit to show off yet, but knew they needed to get a trailer out to prove the title is actually coming out. Kind of screwed whichever way they went honestly. I'm glad they showed off something though. A lot can change in a year.

Not projecting for me at least. I don't expect next gen graphics for a Switch game, I expect a unique and captivating new art style, or innovative gameplay ideas. Metroid Prime was one of my favorite games of all time, but I got bored of 2 and 3 pretty quickly. Prime 1 just feels like a moment in time that can't be recaptured ya know? It's been so long that I am not entirely clear on what was so captivating about the first game anymore, but it doesn't seem to carry forward.
I'll be honest, I feel like there's a big chunk of people who were so disappointed in the latter two games that they do, in fact, want Prime I all over again.
...But also to me this feels way more Prime 3 intro than Prime 1 so, y'know, your mileage may vary.

Finally. The game will be out next year. Yeesh. It exists!
Wasn't the reciept all faded? It was actually getting hard to read.
I hope!
(But also it's a vertical slice made for a trailer, so who knows where or how or if it'll show up in the actual game.)
I mean its clearly the opening setpeice not like six hours into the game or something
I do wish it wasn't attached to Nintendo's horrendously outdated platform, though.
