So you can pretend that an actor is a prince of a foreign country but speaking English for some magical reason, for a role, but not that he isn't white?
Oh, it's not that. It's mostly that Kenneth Brannagh makes a terrible Hamlet.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

If the movie is being sold primarily to an English-speaking audience, it's sometimes a good idea to film it in English.
and if you reeeeeeeeally wanna see a white guy playing Othello, watch the Orson Welles version.
Oh, hey, speaking of racial incongruity in theatre, isn't Aida about some darknesses? Because a local community theatre is doing a production of it.
EDIT: Yep. Ethiopian princess.

what an about a version of romeo and juliet where juliet is played by a dude?!?!?!?!?!?!?
I have to say Podly really did a number on the Thor thread.
Is stupid a number?
no he's spot on.
The plot of Othello is totally going to make sense when Othello is the same race as Iago and Desmona's father.
A) Yeah, it does. Race isn't necessarily what the play is about.
You're conflating the actor and the role. You might as well complain that Kenneth Branagh isn't really a prince of Denmark.
while in theory all actors are infinitely fungible between roles, I think it's fair to recognize that changing up something really visible like race or gender - like making Othello white or James Bond a girl or whatever - can end up adding a new textual payload that completely alter the takeaway for the viewer. it puts that characteristic front and center.
and I think it is possible that there are certain times and certain productions when that could be ill-advised or an outright mistake.

Yeah race is the vehicle for the plot. Iago couldn't have betrayed Othello if Othello wasn't already an outsider.
Your analogy is terrible.
Unless you take one of the other umpteen interpretations, or treat the outsiderness as something other than race.
Or just pretend because you are watching a play and not a bloody documentary
Ah so we're doing "O" or one of any other reiterations of Othello, not the actual play. Othellos race is a central part of the story, not some nit picking detail.
Yeah. And I'm sure when the play debuted there was a black man in the role. And women playing the women.

Using an analogy that draws comparisons between social standing and race is a bad idea. They function entirely different.
What the hell?
I am talking about your arbitrary inability to pretend away some things but not others. The role wasn't written to be performed by a black man. Hell, Desdemona was written for a teenage boy.
Actors are not their roles. That's the point. This isn't about some grand comparison of race and privilege in society, for fuck's sake. Don't be a goose.
My brother is asking me what was terrible about "What the Bleep Do We Know." My claim is that it is blatant pseudoscience, but I don't actually have the scientific background to back this up.

Also, there's just a huge fucking learning curve, and it seemed like the only thing to differentiate my character from other characters was one piece of gear.
I'm not going to like, try and argue you into the game but I will say that the characters kind of start off in a similar place and then diversify as you head up the line.
once you level up your preferred stats and get different ships and gear it becomes very difficult to mistake one guy for another. one dude is a geophysicist and summoning like magma vents from the ground and another is turning invisible and doing kung-fu and a third is just spraying laser fire everywhere.
There have been so many versions of Shakespeare's plays that I would be surprised if there wasn't one involving a love affair between a juvenile monkey and a mentally disabled man.

well that's why I mentioned suspension of disbelief. Were JCVD to play a female role, it would probably fall on it's face, because he wouldn't have the chops to pull it off. But if a good actor really worked with it and played lady macbeth, it could come off without a hitch, and maybe even make the performance very special.

James Bond as a girl would just be spy-themed lesbian porn.

Whenever I see something like that from Japan that whole culture just feels like one giant jigsaw puzzle made from all the missing pieces of all the jigsaw puzzles I've ever owned.

Kristin Linklater did a pretty stunning Lear at one point.

I want you to try to talk me into it; like I said, based on the demo, I'm confused as to how anyone could possibly find it fun. It felt like a version of City of Heroes where everyone plays exactly the same hero, and given how you guys have been talking about how much fun it is, I was very confused.
