Stale and repetitive as they are, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for these games. I've ignored the series since playing Warriors Orochi, but I'm getting in the mood for it again and happened to notice that there is now a Samurai Warriors 3 and something called Strikeforce.
Personally, I've been waiting for the series to include a decent survival mode, and given the type of game this is there's really no excuse to not have one by now. The best we've had in the last games I played is a progression through various floors of a castle, but what I'm really looking for is a mode with you standing in a field, alone, surrounded by as many enemies and officers that the game can handle. I haven't seen anything close to this since Dynasty Warriors 3 or 4, so I'd like to know if any of the recent games include something like that.
Also, if anyone still cares about this series, discuss it here.
It appears to be based more on the earlier ones than the later ones. Capture bases, 4 on 4 battles, quests here and there.
They use an upgrade flask system instead of a powerup pickup system. Basically killing enemies will cause them to drop flasks, and you hold those flasks in a battle and use them to activate those attack x 2 or defense x 2 style powerups.
The game is a bit too slow for my taste, since you don't have a mount and you run around everywhere. I suggest getting an S rank in the very first tutorial mission to skip all the way to guard, then doing gold quests from the Tavern and shopkeeps to get some money to buy auctioned gear at the Broker auction house. And remember, the Attack stat is damage done to people, and Damage stat is attack done to objects.

I was always pissed that they removed Kunoichi, was one of my favorite character.
Not like the series was historically accurate to begin with.
I fondly remember trampling Lu Bu with his own horse, over and over and over...
Damn if that horse didn't kick ass though. i think these games are LOOONG overdue some/any game-play improvements. Saying that, strike-force didn't suck THAT much.

I ate the entire cake. At one point, I remember becoming aware of the oppressive fullness building inside of me, but I kept eating out of a combination of spite and stubbornness. No one could tell me not to eat an entire cake - not my mom, not Santa, not God - no one. I would eat cake whenever I damn well pleased. It was my cake and everyone else could go fuck themselves.
What we need is an Americanized version where you run around as George Washington or Thomas Jefferson and pistol whip the living fuck out of wave after wave of redcoats.

What I've always wanted is a DW-esque game featuring characters and battles from George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series. The depth of characters and history in the novels would really suit the DW style of gameplay. I'd love to tromp around a battlefield as Jaime Lannister or Gregor Clegane etc etc, just destroying mans.

Be careful what you wish for. You'll get your American version, but it'll be set in a fictional 1940s, and it'll be you versus millions and millions of dirty, stereotypical bearded communists.
Americans love to kill Russians in video games. And Japanese know we love to kill Russians (see Vanquish).
A game against the British in the 18th Century? Not as likely, unfortunately.

I think the last one I liked was DW5, and SW2. I hate what they did with the attack multiplier crap in DW6. Also, yes, Koei really needs to at least pretend to polish these games. It's 2010, and they all look like PS2 games still. :?
Id love to see shield walls, pikemen guarding crossbowmen, actual warlike stratagems, as opposed to just being circled warily until i decide its time for mans to die.

I fucking loved Dynasty Warriors 3. To me, it was (at the time) the natural evolution of the beat 'em up genre. They actually did some interesting things with the concept that promised loads of potential.
And then I gradually got frustrated and sick of the series when it absolutely refused to evolve and just rehashed the same stuff over and over again. And so I try out Fist of the North Star a couple of days ago, and found that they still haven't bothered to change even the most basic control/interface/design/technical issues that were present almost ten years ago
Gah, it's so frustrating. I'm not really trying to troll the thread, I just want Koei to do fucking better. I guess they have no incentive to, though.

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
I enjoyed the DW:Empires 4 and 5 spinoffs. It structured the game a bit more than just beat up dudes. It still had plenty of beat up dudes gameplay, though.
Which mission are you doing and on what difficulty level?
Is it mission or story?
The first ... story? ... I guess, on Normal.
You get a choice of one of two pilots, and you're supposed to protect a carrier or something as it enters Earth's atmosphere.
It is, literally, the first thing you get to play. I lose against the same badguy with either pilot, BTW.
It's honestly been a couple months since I picked it up, lost 4 times in a row to the same guy after playing for half-an-hour each time, and put it back down for things like Batman:AA and VC.
EDIT: And this is why I love the PA forums. I make a largely off-the-cuff bitch post, and people (well, person, at least) are actually trying to help me.
Let's see. If you can, do the mission on easy first.
Until you get some parts for you mechs, it's a pretty tough game.
Normal is pretty easy/manageable once you start getting parts and stuff. Remember, though, that parts are exclusive for that mobile suit (like weapons in SW2 and stuff).
Also, when missions pop up, you usually should make a beeline for them. There are a lot of missions that you can fail really easily if you spend a little too much time beating on small fries. (However, if there's an officer there, you can probably manage to beat him first and then head over to the mission).
Also, learn when you can boost cancel your charge attacks. You can generally make an unsafe move safer if you use the boost at the right time.

I kind of have the same soft spot for these games as the OP, so I can definitely sympathize, and hopefully can help some.
As far as Dynasty Warriors goes, as a series, 3 (with XL) will always be the one I like the most, as it managed to leave me with a feeling of the characters having their own individuality beyond their weapons and move sets. After that, it would be 5. 4 and 6 were the mixed bag titles as they tried to do things differently, but it largely didn't work out. (6's failing definitely being the utter lack of stuff, even though I did enjoy it and don't see it as being a technically bad game, just not a good one either.)
For Samurai Warriors, the first game is....eh. There was just a lot of it that I didn't enjoy, and it didn't feel really complete. But Samurai Warriors 2 (And once again, Xtreme Legends to go with it) is probably the best Warriors experience anyone could hope for so far. It's just really varied, manages to keep things from getting stale, and offers a lot of great characters. Overall, if I'd recommend anything, it'd be that.
As for the rest, Warriors Orochi games were just mindless fun. It's unfortunate that Warriors Orochi Z will never see a stateside release, as that would be the best way to get it, but failing that, Warriors Orochi 2 would probably be your best bet there. Great cast of characters and gameplay, and continues the Samurai Warriors 2 feeling of not really letting things get stale too fast. Dynasty Warriors: Gundam wasn't very well-received from what I remember (and, while it was fun, it had too small of a character base, and too narrow a story focus, so you would just end up fighting the same people again and again and again.), but the sequel was liked better, and, though I can't seem to find a link for it, DW:G3 will apparently have 4 player online Co-Op, which is something the games desperately need in the coming titles.
Strikeforce went with that theory as well (originally a PSP game, got an up-port to PS3/360) and though I can't speak from experience, as I don't have the game yet, I really do want to get my hands on it to try it, since it's just blatantly wacky. It more or less grabs DW and drags it further into fantasy, giving everyone 'powered up' forms and basically giving it a straight injection of Dragon Ball Z, so take that for what you will.
Those are about all I can really speak for, haven't gotten Ken's Rage (and I'm not positive I will), and I haven't really branched off into the Basara games (aside from the abysmal Devil Kings, which, the less said the better, probably.) and the only way I'll be able to play Samurai Warriors 3 is when/if the PS3 version gets localized.
And to answer the OP on top of being extremely long-winded about these games, the only real "Survival" mode in any of the games is in Dynasty Warriors 6. And it's not so much a Survival Mode as it is a Time Trial Challenge. They place you on a square map and throw dudes at you for a few minutes, both fodder and officers for every so many fodder killed. At 1000, Lu Bu shows up, if memory serves. (And 2000 if you can make it that far). I wouldn't call it decent since it's too short to really enjoy yourself, but it sort of fits the "Surrounded by all sorts of enemies and officers" bill. (which, to it's credit, DW6 is generally a bit better about having more people on the screen.)
tl;dr: Samurai Warriors 2 is awesome and if you like it, get Xtreme Legends for it. Warriors Orochi 2 was great too. And Dynasty Warriors 6, even though it wasn't great (nor was it bad) kind of had a survival mode (even though it was just a challenge) and, just on it's own, had a lot more enemies and officers on screen than previous titles.
However, with Samurai Warriors 3 Z, they might fix everything. I'm not holding my breath though.
DW7 has to impress the hell out of me after how bad 6 ended up being.
Finally, I'm really excited for Gundam 3 from the stuff I've seen of it.
Wait, SW3 sucked? But SW2 was my favourite of the entire series...
The entire series really just seems to be headed in a stupid direction. They seem to develop 4 different games simultaneously and I think they'd be better off focusing on just a couple. DW6 in particular was fucking horrible and as a PS3/360 game, it was a complete and utter embarassment. They should not be having the same god-damn pop-up and framerate issues they had on the PS2.
I'd like to be hopeful for DW7 but they're probably going to stick with a lot of the DW6 changes I didn't like, so maybe I should just move over to Sengoku Basara.

The real reason that SW3 sucks so much is that it's slow. It's much slower than SW2 and it really shows if you played the others.
Ah, I can see how it sucks then. The main reason why I liked SW2 was because it was a hell of a lot quicker than the others. Well it seemed that way anyway, since I usually just played as the ninjas.
Since this is getting more responses than I expected, I'm going to go ahead and write up a long-winded post too.
I started the series with 3, though the first game I actually bought was Samurai Warriors 1. The rest I had been playing with friends who owned them. I recently bought DW3 to see how it holds up, and I really liked the fact that running into a large group was actually dangerous. In recent games, normal enemies can barely touch you, with the challenge provided mostly by the special units. On top of that, killing the leader makes the whole group retreat. I thought that was an interesting idea when they first implemented it, but in practice it just means that half the people surrounding you will run off after you take a few swings and inevitably kill some of the leaders.
I agree that Samurai Warriors 2 was the best of the series. The most fun I'm had in any of the games took place in this (I think, there's a small chance it was the first one), in the level with all the shallow rivers running in different directions. If you ignore the mission objectives and piss off all the enemy officers without killing them, they'll all come downstream towards a castle you're supposed to protect. I did this while playing as Mitsuhide (Nobunaga's right hand man with the samurai sword and long black hair, in case I've got the wrong name), and fending off 8 or more playable officers along with all of their generic officers in one small field was the best fight I've had in a 3D beat-em-up.
I used Mitsuhide for the counter move he had in that game. Every game has a wide selection of crowd-clearers that can take out everything around them using only one or two moves, but Mitsuhide's counter allowed me to play it a little more like a movie hero; taking out one or two guys at a time while blocking and returning any strike that came my way. I was quite disappointed to find that Orochi removed many of the special moves from the SW characters to make room for party buffs and the like.
I tried playing DW Gundam when a friend bought it. While I think the gameplay was objectively worse than the main series, there was another problem that kept me from buying it. In DW, the game is designed to make you feel like a ridiculously powerful anime hero, and for the most part it works. It's not such a big deal now, but back in the day, watching 3 or more guys fly backward with every strike was amazing, and it truly felt like the natural evolution of fantasy beat-em-ups.
Gundam, on the other hand, has you playing as a mech. It may not have anything to do with gameplay directly, but it just feels WRONG swinging a weapon around on the ground while hordes of other mechs stand around and watch. I can't play as a Japanese robot without wanting to boost all over the place, so I can't help comparing it to Armored Core or Zone of the Enders, and next to those you might as well have a ball and chain attached to each leg. Imagine playing a flight sim in which you're piloting something that looks like a jet fighter, but handles like a 747. Even if the 747 handles better and responds faster than a real one, it would still feel slow and awkward because looking like a jet makes you instinctively want it to fly like a jet. I know it's not really a fair judgement, but this completely ruins DW Gundam for me.
As for DW, my favorite character has always been Pang Tong, and I must have Weapon of Choice playing any time I'm using him. His backflip combo syncs with it perfectly. In Orochi, I did this while using Pang Tong, Wei Yan, and Sun Shang Xiang.
I didn't like the Orochi games because of how grindy they get near the end game. I still don't have Shin Orochi in WO2 because of the ridiculous-time consuming way you have to unlock him.
DW2, though, I love and have a shit ton of hours in.
In order of me buying though, it goes DW4>XL>Empires>SW1>DW3>XL>DW5>SW1XL>DW5XL>Empires>SW2>Empires>Gundam>
DW6>SW2XL>Gundam2>DW6Empires>SW3
I forgot to mention the graphics in my last post. As far as I'm concerned, they can keep the series at PS2 level as long as they want, with the condition that they use all that extra processing power to surround me with more dudes and remove the lag. Dead Rising 2 seems to be doing a fine job of filling a mall with really good looking zombies, so with PS2 models DW should be able to have as many troops as grass blades by now. I know Dead Rising is cheating by splitting everything into small sections, but it's not like DW needs to process every sword swing in a battle if you're not there to witness it.
How are the Empires games? I have yet to play one of them, and I'm not even entirely sure what they are.

So, should I get the original SW2 or SW2: Empires?
I don't know the difference.
In all honesty i think Strike-Force is the best game so far. 4 player co-op and enemies that actually do attack sometimes go a long way to fixing DW. The level design and mission goals had "some" effort put into it, as opposed to "go here, look at fog, kill interchangeable bad-guy" that was the staple of the series so far.

SW2 is all you really need.
However, SW2 Empires is really fun too. Empires is like this:
You are a leader of a force. Japan is split into different sections where each lord owns one section of land. On your turn, you get money from your fiefs and then you use that money for various things like strategies for battle, recruiting officers, managing weapons, ect. Then, after you do whatever in your turn, there's a battle phase. You can choose to attack any surrounding territory and try and make it your own. However, enemy forces may attack you as well, so you might have to spend your turn defending instead. You keep doing this while building your empire and try and conquer Japan.
It's really very fun, but there's not really a story mode or anything, and no weapon hunting. I really enjoy the empires games (well DW5E and SW2E) DW6E just left a bad taste in my mouth.

So annoying.
What I want are more Musou games on handhelds.

DW2, though, I love and have a shit ton of hours in.
In order of me buying though, it goes DW4>XL>Empires>SW1>DW3>XL>DW5>SW1XL>DW5XL>Empires>SW2>Empires>Gundam>
DW6>SW2XL>Gundam2>DW6Empires>SW3
Give me back my money Koei.
