The implanting of the pregnant women was actually truly horrifying to watch.
See, that part just puzzeled me. I know what they were aiming for, but you can't get there from the mouth. Unless they wanted to say they ate there way into the womb, in which case I doubt the woman would survive long enough to incubate the aliens.

At least I hope we can all just agree that James Cameron maybe should just fucking get on making the Battle Angel Alita film already seriously what the fuck is taking him so long, right guys?
I don't even know what Battle Angel Alita is but it sounds like anime
So
Maybe, I guess?
I'd actually like to see someone do a good live-action version of an anime. Mostly because I don't like the classic anime style but I do think there are some cool ideas in anime stories.
This has been answered I'm sure, but it's a comic.
A pretty damn good one too.
I've had a hard on for years waiting for Cameron to do that shit.

I have a friend who spent a period of about 5 years at Weta FX as a 3D modeller working on oh God anything but Avatar I've had enough of making fucking trees.
Seriously. He did some District 9 stuff, a couple of commercials, whatever was around because any time he stopped all there was to do was more fucking trees.

That's part of the WTF. (That scene was just for shock value anyway.)
"WTF, the human body doesn't work that way."
"WTF, the Alien reproduction doesn't work that way."
"WTF... just WTF."
"Oh. You guys are just being dicks. OK. Fuck you."
Well im not saying either side is right. Im not saying anyone SHOULD like Avatar, im just saying its not insanity or poor taste if you do. Theres a bunch of 90% movies on rottentomatoes I absolutely hate.
However this rule of course doesnt apply if you dislike Aliens. Thats just criminal.

I didn't think the creature/planet design was as omfg groundbreaking original amazing as everyone else seems to and got all my art school friends mad at me
ain't change the fact that avatar is a movie with a shit-boring plot, pathetic characterization, a cartoonish villain, and some nice pandering racism to top it all off
okay sure I'm willing to allow that you like the look of the movie, it was very much not to my taste but it may be to yours
but avatar is the closest instance I can recall right now to a movie that is intellectually nearly indefensible
The creature/planet design was definately not original (not much is, but it wasnt at all), but it was pretty goddamn amazing. Visually it was groundbreaking in a lot of ways, not just technically but in terms of spectacle-storytelling.
I think thats a bit much Dichotomy. And the whole racial pandering bullshit is over the top. Its average on all counts, its by no means as aggressively bottom of the barrel in those areas as you say.
I love how people complain about its political, social and racial pandering, then you actually look at the impact it had, and a lot of rights groups took it up as a banner, particularly in China.
The movie was earnest and well-meaning, I felt the condescension of the "lol WHITE PEOPLE SAVE THE DAY BOOO POST COLONIALISM" crowd worse than anything the movie presented.
The problem is when you try and do 'natural' or non-fantasy creatures you end up in a lot of the same dead ends. Im not excusing the unoriginality of a lot of creature design these days, but there was a lot to like in Avatar.
Also the extended edition of Avatar makes the humans a little less cartoonishly evil, as they have a scene were the Na'vi murder a bunch of marines after they wreck that first tree. So first blood is spilt by the Na'vi. It annoys me they took it out of the cinema version, because it creates a very different tone.

the creature design in Avatar was from the same school of creature design that gave us the Cloverfield monster and the Super 8 alien
limbs everywhere, completely forgettable
rule 1: add extra pair of limbs
rule 2: everything is bioluminescent
this isn't so much a problem with the design as a personal quibble
but I became enraged when it was demonstrated that the space horses eat by slurping up space nectar like a hummingbird how the fuck does an animal that size get away with that

This thread was all about that jazz. Some good stuff in there.
In general though I think distinctive silhouette. Balanced design, and just generally being able to be new and iconic. If it has extra limbs make sure they aren't extraneous (Alien Queen is a great job of extra limbs done right)
Personally when it comes to giant monsters like in Cloverfield, Godzilla, and the like I tend to prefer creatures with more mass. Like very monumental looking. If that makes any sense.

The only two to share the distinction of being killed by an Alien, a Predator, and a Terminator.

He got really sick of trees by the end of it.

Neville Rage rising.
But yeah, the man cannot design a monster. That overarching elbow limb thing was done in Star Trek, Cloverfield, and Super 8.
And it look awful every time.
Stop it with bendy limbs that pop out of funny places.

So awesome
(not because of the monster designs though)
Cloverfield was ok. But I actually think the monster design really did ruin a lot of it for me.
