    land, birds of paradise
    land, kodama's reach
    land, bloodbraid elf

    mmmmm

also legacy is more coin flippy than like standard. and definitely more than a new set, which i was just like ? at

Then a Thoctar and then a Drumhunter and my "standard opening is complete. The Sheperd does sound pretty good though.

The lifegain Mythic in Dark Ascension is awful in everything but commander.
And even there it is super questionable.

I've been wondering about mono-red burn in Modern

this is a format where your opponent is playing a full turn behind schedule, or they're shocking themselves constantly. Is Fireblast that important? (I'm guessing it must be)

maybe some Path to Exiles? it's in color and is a pretty great answer to just about anything

You're better off playing Affinity. You get to play Cranial plating+Steel Shaper's Gift. You also get Shrapnel Blast and Galvanic Blast.

Burn in modern is actually just awful. Jund and Melira are both running Kitchen Finks (Which essentially autoscoops you), Martyr of Sands is an actual deck. Zoo is running Lightning Helix+Snapcaster mage (that and they can just kill you faster). Splinter Twin and Storm Combo kill you faster.

start replacing those common 5 power guys with cheap rares like this
    118.jpg
    also cool:
    122.jpg
    180.jpg
    110.jpg + bloodbraid elf

though you don't want to hit it with the elf itself, just a cool way to reuse the cascade if the elf is already in play

Wild Nacatl might be a good early-game play, though I guess it's competing with Birds as a one-drop

Specific advice: You're probably going to want to run three or four more land, at least. Birds and Rampant Growth and Kodama's Reach are good for getting mana quickly sometimes but you're going to be mulliganing a ton of zero- and one-land hands. And worse, you're going to end up keeping a ton of one-land hands with Birds and getting your Birds lightning bolted and having your whole game plan fall to pieces.

More general, related advice: When deckbuilding, it's important not to focus exclusively on best-case scenarios, which I get the sense is the case when you said that your "standard opening" involves a turn one birds of paradise. Openings like turn one birds turn two Thoctar are a beatdown, but how often will that happen? (given that you'd need a hand with one of 8 forests, one of 8 plains/mountains, a Birds and a Thoctar: very little, sadly).

This is all true. But then, a lot of it is even true-er in Legacy and Yost still walked away with a giant cheque. Magic is a mysterious game.

Wild Nacatl is super sexy in legacy zoo decks, but in a deck with 4 plains and 4 mountains it won't be near as impressive. And in a deck that wins with a stampede of titanic ultimatum'd dudes, getting two damage out of an ahead-of-the-curve 2/2 isn't going to make or break any games.

By standard opening I don't mean those exact steps. To me the first goal of my deck(precluding I see the chance for an early win) is to get out a power 5 creature and a Drumhunter. I get enough attacking and defending power that I get a turn or two I don't have to worry about the opponent will I out draw him and start pumping out as many creatures as my mana allows.

The mana thing. I've heard that quite a lot but I've had very little trouble with land. I'll change it if that changes but I'm feeling pretty comfortable.

The only life-gain card in the entire top 8 that Yost won was Zuran Orb in the lands list.

    Go.
Pre-release and launch events are so fun.
All these people opening up new packs of never before played magic cards and just going insane trying to figure out how to make them work in a sealed deck/draft pool.

It's one of the most level playing fields, where the only thing a more seasoned player has over a newer one is that little bit of experience.

    I enjoy sealed
Takes the pressure away from having to pick things as they come by
So much strategy involved in drafting. Need to get better at it though :?

I like sealed better because I get what I get, and I don't have to pass something to someone else just because it won't help me do better

in draft I often find myself having to pick between something I want outside of the tournament and something that is significantly less rare/useful but is much better for the deck that's taking shape
