Anyone who's seen an action movie with an airplane in it knows "OPEN WINDOW BAD". They know enough to realize that the people in the movie aren't screaming for joy at the sudden influx of precious oxygen and they aren't wildly throwing themselves at the hole in the plane because "MORE OXYGEN FOR ME HAHA SUCKERS".

Oh, i think it's supposed to be pretty damn creepy. George R.R Martin is not kind to the medieval era, just honest. Honestly, almost every sex scene in the books have something that makes you feel vaguely uncomfortable, which i always thought was an interesting bit of writing you don't see very often.

Oh, i think it's supposed to be pretty damn creepy. George R.R Martin is not kind to the medieval era, just honest. Honestly, almost every sex scene in the books have something that makes you feel vaguely uncomfortable, which i always thought was an interesting bit of writing you don't see very often.
Right, he's partially deconstructing the fantasy genre. It's pointing out the fact that in most medieval fantasies you read, a lot of their values mirror ours in ways that they really wouldn't have in that time period (or in a world mimicking that time period). So maybe they have arranged marriages, but they always wait until the wife is an age that's confortable for us. Knights are generally cool guys who want to protect women and get mad if you slaughter a bunch of serfs for no reason. Nobles think a lot of their bloodline but aren't into marrying their siblings.
A lot of the Martin books is creepy on purpose; it stretches the truth toward discomfort in the same way that other fantasy books tend to stretch the truth toward comfort.
Martin replaced any passion for sex with passion for food, so all the sex scenes are purposeful and character driven, and all the eating scenes are sensual fluff.
