To my pleasant surprise, Toho Kingdom is alive and well!
I highly recommend its Kaiju Movies and Cutting Room sections, which feature lots of juicy concept art (make sure to check out some of the wild concept art for Biollante and SpaceGodzilla, the latter of which featured shit like a Godzilla centaur and a winged Godzilla.)
EDIT: Speaking of concept art, here's excerpts from The Art of Shin Godzilla. Included is the best look we'll probably ever get of the "Godzilla people". Plus, at one point the idea of Godzilla growing a second head was being floated!
So I'm currently on a personal quest to fill a "Godzilla Weirdness" album I made on my phone last night, and I figured the old Marvel Comics series would help out with that. Said series featured a group from S.H.I.E.L.D. trying to stop Godzilla, and before it was over Godzilla had not only fought several new kaiju, but also the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Devil Dinosaur, cowboys, and a rat (the premise of the last arc of the series was S.H.I.E.L.D. using Pym particles to shrink Godzilla to the size of a lizard only for him to eventually begin growing back to his original size).
When the series ended, though, Marvel still brought him back one more time in a wildly different form, the explanation being that a villain whose monsters Godzilla defeated before had mutated him into a new (and legally distinct) creature.
Later, a similar creature called Leviathan appeared. Said creature was created by a scientist character from the Marvel Godzilla series, but was slain way more easily than the original Godzilla. Apparently it's a matter of debate among fans whether or not Leviathan was actually intended to be part of a retcon to say that the Godzilla of the old series had actually been Leviathan the entire time.
Finally, a few years back Marvel introduced the American Kaiju, Todd Ziller (I swear I'm not making this up). Mr. Ziller was infused with Super Soldier Serum, Pym Particles, DNA from the Lizard, and several other substances that turned him into a Godzilla knock-off with the American flag emblazoned on his chest and forehead.
I went into this looking for an image of Godzilla fighting the Fantastic Four and ended up with Todd Ziller. What a journey of discovery this was. Honestly didn't expect 2010's Marvel to outdo the original Marvel Godzilla series in terms of ridiculous weirdness, but here we are.
So I'm looking at the Wikizilla pages concerning the Netflix Godzilla trilogy and its two tie-in novels. I feel like overall that trilogy had some buckwild concepts, but didn't land the execution.
I'm amused to discover that there's concept art describing all the different weaponry that series' version of MechaGodzilla had and explanations for how it would have been used despite the fact that MechaGodzilla never even does anything in its original form, instead opting to turn itself into a gigantic factory fortress city capable of generating anti-Godzilla weapons and traps over the span of 20,000 years.
I wish I could find a clip of the Ghidorah cult scene in The Planet Eater, too. Instead I'll post some Godzilla vs Evangelion merch pics I just found.
It's easier to get Kong's rights in that Kong is in the public domain, yes.
IIRC, King Kong, the 1933 movie is public domain but King Kong, the character, is not.
It's like how there's a couple of superman animated movies in the public domain, even though Warner Bros. own the character's copyright.
The original story that King Kong is from is in the public domain.
Ah, that must be it. For some reason I thought the 1933 movie was the original Kong story.
Nope, the original story only even entered into the public domain because the rights holders didn't properly reapply for its copyright, because that was a thing that could happen back in the day.
Stuff like George Romero's Night of the Living Dead fell immediately into the public domain because of antiquated copyright laws that weren't shored up until like the 1970s.
Oh you mean normal copyright laws that aren't intense bullshit.
is the 'Godzilla' in the trailer a fair bit smaller than before? I don't think he could fight on top of an aircraft carrier at his previous size. Also, it doesn't look like Kong is all that much bigger than he was in Skull Island.
May feed more into the theory that the one in the trailer is not really Godzilla and may be an imposter/Mechagodzilla.

If MechaGodzilla really shows up in this movie after how Gareth Edwards wanted G14 to be grounded I will laugh and laugh. With delight!
It's a series about how there have always existed a multitude of giant creatures that completely ignore the square/cube law and somehow feed on radiation instead of getting cancer from it, and the only reason people don''t know about it is because somehow most evidence was lost and the rest was successfully covered up by a shadowy multinational organization that somehow never leaked, ever, despite sitting on the greatest scientific discovery in human history.
But sure, it's "grounded."
Let me tell you about another "grounded" series about a bllionaire who witnesses his parents deaths and decides to dress up like a bat to scare criminals, and also there's a doctor who created a fear toxin and another dude who's part of a secret society who destroys cities at the height of their power, who will use a microwave generator to vaprorize the city's water supply which has been inundated with said fear toxin.
It's a very realistic take!

The ways in which we approach and critically examine different adaptations of the same material are strange and confusing indeed
Also I desperately want the Yoji Shinkawa Mechagodzilla figure, and will pine for it until my dying day

Kong is to big to be on an aircraft carrier, much less Godzilla and him at the same time. That a big fuckin boat.
Which, I mean they had a giant flying fortress plane last go round I'll believe giant super carrier.
Pretty sure they played around with the sizes depending on what looked cooler in KotM.

"why do we even HAVE the square cubed law"
Apparently the creators of the Netflix Godzilla series decided to make Godzilla a weird metal tree creature partially because trees can get very large and somehow it would help justify how this Godzilla could eventually attain a height of nearly 1000 feet tall.
But enough about that! It's time for a quick exposé on everyone's favorite Godzilla series creature:
There's a Godzilla anime coming to Netflix in April that they've just dropped a new trailer for. Interestingly, Godzilla is nowhere in sight. Also, it looks like Jet Jaguar is gonna be more important than I expected
Turns out two consecutive movies had concept art of Godzilla's blood raining down on people and killing them. Shin Godzilla at one point was going to straight-up vomit a ridiculous amount of blood.

I like Shin Godzilla, but the creature is so friggin' weird I can't help but think of it as some other thing taking Godzilla's form.
I wish they'd do more with this. Off the top of my head, really only the original Godzilla really showcased the "after effects" of Godzilla in depth. Shin Godzilla was probably next best at this. For Godzilla VS movies it's not that big of a deal since the focus is on the Kaiju. Though I'd certainly watch a Shin Godzilla type movie dealing with 2 Kaiju going after each other and the effects of that. Sort of like Godzilla 2014 but with way less military and more bureaucracy. Godzilla 1984 feels like it could have added 15 minutes extra dealing with some of the fallout.
jesus is that just a shitton of eyes in all that Godzilla meat?
Yep. Apparently the original concept was that pieces of Godzilla's flesh would start growing into teratoma like blobs of Godzilla parts, but in the end this was nixed as it was deemed a bit too ghoulish.
Shin Godzilla is honestly such a bizarre creature that I can't help but think of him as his own thing distinct from other incarnations of Godzilla.

I would argue he has more in common with the original Godzilla movie than most of the Godzilla movies.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

Tonally, yeah, but other Godzillas are big vaguely dinosaurian things, whereas Shin feels (to me) more like John Carpenter's The Thing temporarily taking Godzilla's form.
It would've been interesting if the original 1954 Godzilla had been like Shin, though. Changing that freak into a heroic figure for movies aimed at children would have been a feat (though now I want to see Shin photoshopped into Son of Godzilla or Godzilla vs Megalon or something). Not even the GMK Godzilla, which was literally empowered by the will of hateful souls who wanted to destroy Japan, feels as menacing and wrong.
Anyways, in other weird discoveries, at one point there apparently was going to be an American-made man-in-suit direct sequel to Godzilla 2000 that the creator wanted to cast Bruce Campbell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Lee, and Leonard Nimoy for. Sony ended up cancelling the project because they weren't keen on making such a relatively low-budget $20 million movie: Source
So I just read the overviews for two REALLY FRICKIN' WEIRD unmade Godzilla movies
A Space Godzilla, in which Godzilla is revealed to be a female alien whose real name is Rozan and eventually sent by humans in a spaceship made for her to return to her home planet (I apologize, my mistake, she actually is TURNED INTO A SPACESHIP) in time to help her species fight off an alien invasion. The movie never got made, but apparently a version of the story was published in a Japanese magazine.
The second one is so fucking bizarre I had to find a reputable source to confirm that this is actually real:
At precisely the moment of World War III (Middle East = a struggle for energy resources in the 1980s)
Visitors from outer space that, since time immemorial, we have called “gods” have come to visit Earth. They’ve appeared before us to issue a warning. However, these gods possess a true essence that cannot so easily be shown, and thus they do not show themselves. This is because they are consciousness-based galactic life-forms, or, in other words, they’re something like a form of mental energy.
Their starship, which has come here from outside of the Milky Way Galaxy, arrives in the year 198X and heads towards a newly discovered dinosaur-shaped figure found amongst the Nazca Lines in South America, letting out flashing lights as it does so. (In regards to the spaceship’s approach path, employ the Aramaki theory. “The Null Space of the Continent of Mu”)
Thus is Godzilla resurrected.
This Godzilla is not an ally of justice. In other words, he is a malevolent god, a god of destruction, a being akin to the Hindu god Kali. Just as Kali is a dark god, this Godzilla is truly dark.
Thus, the final days of judgment as recorded in the Book of Revelation has begun. Could it be that the great prophecies of Nostradamus are coming true…?
The countries of the world, with the UN at their center, are all running wild in an attempt to create countermeasures, but Godzilla remains invincible.
The gods send down a humanoid who goes by the name of Jesus, Son of God. Godzilla is being manipulated by this humanoid. Their relationship is akin to a Jungian schema. The humanoid is the Superego, and Godzilla is the Unconscious (the Node).
So, based on this composition, humanity is the Ego. Thus, humanity (the Ego) is, unbeknownst to themselves, under the binding spell of the Superego. In other words, the giant dark Godzilla of this film is the Unconscious given flesh, and the humanoid (Jesus) is the Superego given flesh.
These people who have been put under this binding spell are afflicted by nightmares and hallucinations.
The spaceship destroys Earth’s Van Allen radiation belt. Thus falls down the “formless great ball” as prophesied by Nostradamus. The spaceship sends the various cities of Earth into chaos. A torrential downpour continues unabated. Coastal cities are destroyed by Godzilla’s tsunami attacks.
The war is heading towards a decisive loss for humanity.
“Behold, your future!!”
An image of humanity’s future is projected using the open skies above Giza in Egypt as a giant screen. Upon the screen squirm our mutant descendants…
The voice of the Son of God, Jesus, reverberates. His form is golden and shining. He stands at the very peak of the Pyramid…
Godzilla crouches down, Sphinx-like.
The Humanoid ascends on a stairway of light towards the heavens…
Also interesting they went with a design that looks like it could orient itself horizontally, like a real dinosaur, if only it didn't have such a massive tail.

It's a meter tall and can be yours for the low, low price of $2000.
I'm not gonna lie, if I had that kind of money I would totally buy a three foot tall Mothra-winged Burning Godzilla statue.

I know you're making a jape about how our copyright laws are still intense bullshit, but I think we can all agree that "well if you literally don't have © and a year made on the title card, your original work is not copywritten" is some intense bullshit.
