WoD suffered becauze they had to scrap a bunch of planned content because they were worried about folks getting tired of Orcs
Gorgorond was originally a lot more Iron Horde focused and was going to have a big storyline with Doomhammer and Durotan's friendship
And the second raid was going to be a big Shattrath raid that had the second chunk of Yrel's story in it
It led to the plan of having these Warlords act as big villains to be constantly running into and eventually overcoming getting abandoned and everything feeling rushed and half-baked in a very disappointing way
It's funny comparing this cinematic to the CGI one made to announce BFA, which actually demonstrates a complex scene that shows how each side is viewed by the other. The horde are given lingering camera shots that emphasize their wounds while the alliance are faceless, scary soldiers. Then Anduin drops the helm and the tragedy of them dying is focused on as he resurrects them, while the horde shots now emphasize their monstrous qualities. Whoever directed that knew what they were doing!

well the good news is that the moment you leave alternate past draenor none of what happened there will ever matter again except "alternate past gul'dan escaped to main timeline azeroth to summon the legion and start the events of the next expansion"
Well and hellcream dies right
Yep. The players get denied their chance for satisfaction so that Green Moses can killsteal again.

Isn’t Yrel a big deal in this expansion?
Not really?
Apparently in the intervening 30 years--wibbly wobbly timey wimey--she went full fanatic and started up a faction called the Lightbound, the purpose of which is swordpoint conversions to the Light of both draenei and orcs. But she's just mentioned, and it's not really important except as window dressing.
Because Blizzard cannot write powerful women who do not die, get sidelined, get depowered, or turn evil/crazy. I can count the exceptions on one hand.
In the cinematic Sylvanas is cold as fuckin' ice and orders them to burn the tree and makes the Night Elf watch
and then the dialogue she speaks when you fade back into game was like "it wasn't supposed to go this way....it was supposed to be a preemptive strike to prevent a war....but I guess we're here now"
like
you just...burned the tree....you could've not done that
part of me wonders if dialogue like this is them realizing that the Warbringers short came out super aggro, but because of the production time involved in it couldn't go back and re-workshop it, so they're trying to immediately backpedal her character
I think they need to quickly realize they can't really undo this one, I can't think of a way to walk back
razing a city of civilians solely out of spite while forcing a dying, crying, soldier to spend her last seconds watching it burn
If they have plans to make Sylvanas a sympathetic, #morallygrey, character through BFA they better be updating them furiously

Sylvanas is going to trade places with Vol'jin and we're going to get him for real this time
And he and Anduin are gonna have a redo of the confrontation after the fall of Garrosh where King Anime was a big dipwad, but Baby King will be cool this time

Maybe she just dies in the opening cinematic.
I mean.
That's what happened to King gat damn Anime.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
The resolution to the Garrosh stuff in Nagrand is one of my favorite pieces of storytelling WoW has ever done
And it actually pulled off a kinda shades of grey type deal that they constantly shoot for
Garrosh was a monster, but when he is beating the piss out of Thrall he lets his genuine emotion out and reveals how betrayed he felt by Thrall making him Warchief and immediately leaving with no support to help this young dude he placed an ENORMOUS amount of pressure on who was a depressed wreck, like, a couple of years ago
And Thrall knows he has to kill Garrosh, because he created the monster he became, but can't do it honorably so he uses the Elements to trap and murder Garrosh and whoops now he can't use them anymore
And the actual cutscene itself was gorgeous and had some of the best voice acting, which WoW is normally PRETTY BAD at, they've ever done
I'll be very disappointed if someone doesn't make two or three screenshots of the moment when the NE tells Sylvanas she can't kill hope just to swap out Sylvanas' line of "Can't I?" for "Hold my beer."
yeah I actually really like the classic orc clans stuff and all the shit they cut probably would have been right up my alley and that part was great
also the cinematic was indeed stupid but im not boycotting the game over it or whatever

I don't think anyone said they're boycotting? Just either playing Alliance, generally bummed, or probably not gonna pick up BFA just because it's not interesting to them now.
Garrosh comes across as a whiner in that cinematic. Wrath shows that he’s got a huge following. And with Sarufang Jr. out of the picture, he’s the premier orc.

His downfall is that he was a damn racist.
Yeah.
His very first policy was "ORCS FIRST, ERRYBODY OUTS" with org.
He literally had Cairne and Vol'Jin right fucking there to guide him along.
But they weren't orc enough.

not picking up BFA because it's not interesting now would be functionally the same as boycotting blizzard but I think most people who post here are just resigned to the bad writing at this point. I'm always hoping that they can do better next time.

At least I have a fun little sea shanty from all this nonsense.

Whiner is good though
That's a side of him that you don't see
Having the guy who has been a cackling supervillain who is always super confident and menacing break down and throw a literal tantrum because his father figure abandoned him and that means what he did isn't his fault is a good character beat and shows more depth than 95% of the rest of WoW writing
Y'know come to think of it, this obviously doesn't happen, but if they just killed Sylvanas next week and the rest of the expansion was about trying to mitigate this war that she started and now no longer has to deal with

that might be ok
Has she been seen in the beta past the Undercity Siege?
“Hey do you remember every character who was important literally twenty years ago? No? Well buckle up buttercup”

The dev team at the reveal Blizzcon literally said "we are sad we killed of these characters in WC 1-3 so we found a way to have a story where they are all back. Savage!"

yeah but many of the posters here did not seek out spoilers throughout beta and are experiencing things live

she shows up in stormsong valley to butcher civilians, including a panicked child screaming at someone being impaled on the wall

I have absolutely zero recollection of this having done SSV as both factions.

horde attacks and starts killing everyone and burning everything, panicked child NPCs running around and people killed everywhere

I mean it doesn't really change anything but it's at least somewhat of an explanation
That would be insane and also very sad.
You can’t bring Sargeras back into the ‘things to worry about column so fast. There needs to be more time between being the direct threat. Otherwise it just becomes a Team Rocket situation.
I mean it doesn't really change anything but it's at least somewhat of an explanation
that is most definitely not it.
legion is over. i mean, they didn't kill sargeras so i wouldn't be shocked if they pull him out again sometime, but they're not going to continue stuff related to the burning legion. nor do i think that makes much sense. if she's being controlled by anything it'll be old gods, but frankly i think they're playing it completely straight and she's just that evil
Yeah I think most would say Legion was one of the better expansions. I'm sure it varies person to person, but most I've seen commenting on it put it up there with Wrath.
I can see that. But even Wrath had maybe the dumbest writing I have ever seen in this game for the main storyline.
