I don't hate the Arise character designs.
Which is weird, because that is usually my instant complaint in tales games (and has made me not buy them).
They're downright ok actually.

I think the main character's design is a bit boring and the main female character is a bit overdressed for a gun girl.
But the other 2 look cool and there will be tons of costume dlc anyway.
My Bravely Second playthrough has come to kind of a halt as I've gotten distracted by the arts and crafts idle game. It seems like I can't convert these into actual money yet - in a rough sense, how far in the game do I have to be until I can do that?

Boring is or a bit over dressed are high praises for jrpg characters.
Often the design is closer to ridiculous and physically impossible.
Though tales series is by no means among the worst, nowhere near.
Eh, I don't think everything needs to be "realistic" or conservative.
And I prefer when things are expressive even if they aren't realistic or practical. Now this can be very hit or miss of course but I think it's more interesting.
Basically fashion...fashion is all that matters.

I'm ambivalent to costumes/character design except for the most stupid or samey looking, but what'll get my dander in a fluff in an instant are particularly ostentatious details that look good for maybe like one cutscene or screen shot, and spend most of the time clipping through models or otherwise glitching out. Cool cape, dude. It'd be even cooler if it wasn't inside your arm literally every time you moved. Love the extra spikes on the giant sword and how every time you spin it, it passes through your own head. This goes for monster design too. Yeah, that's a super cool intro for this giant flying dragon boss. The camera is now locked to its crotch while the party spends the next fives minutes furiously attacking the empty air three feet under its left foot while it melodramatically pretends to have been hit. Exactly how I always pictured an epic battle playing out.
I really wanted to like Octopath Traveler when it first came out, but I just couldn't get through the demo. Something about the combat just seemed to not click. But recently I've been listening to the soundtrack a lot (IT'S GOOD) and I decided to give it another shake.
I don't know what my issue was initially. I went through Cyrus' chapter then hopped up north and did Ophelia's before the 3 hour timer ran out. So I'm probably gonna buy it.
I think the only thing I don't like is that I seem to run out of MP a lot. If a creature is weak against staves and has 1 shield I can boost 4x and hit four times, and the first hit breaks the shield while the rest do normal damage. But if a creature is weak against fire, I have to spend 1 turn casting unboosted fire to break the shield and then boosted fire, doubling the MP required to do normal damage.

So I was right about the town being Frozen by Krystalinda pretending to be Frysabel, twice, and Jasper being the one who let her go. Snorri really is just a scholar though, which is good because making him also Jasper would have been some convoluted storytelling, if kind of hilarious. Though I gotta say this entire party is a group of idiots. "I wonder who could possibly have the same pendant as Sir Hendrik, ONE of TWO top knights in Heliodor. I just can't think of anyone at all..." And then for some reason the game decides now is the best time for Rab to reveal he stole a porno magazine from the Library by dropping it out of his royal clothes (because costume). Well they did say the Library contains the entire sum of human knowledge so in addition to prophecies and witches it only makes sense to include every copy of Playboy or whatever I guess. Not like perverted old man is anything new to a JRPG and he at least seems to limit it to inanimate magazines so far as I've seen. Please don't do anything to ruin that, DQ.
Now I could probably Zoom back to Arboria and proceed with the main story quest but I am 99% sure now's the time when new quests have opened up for me to do so I'm gonna do a sweep of the world before heading off. Not that I think I'm even remotely close to the end of the game.
In fact I expect the landscape itself to be shifting once I reach Yggdrasil. There's been several chests I can't even reach in the overworld and no techniques to bridge the gaps. So my guess is I'm gonna accidentally unleash something that does a Cataclysm leading into a second half, World of Ruin FF6 style. Yet another reason to do as much as I can now.
You may already know this but the quest log will tell you if you have quests available but not accepted yet and where you can pick them up, if you want to save some running around the world.
Thanks, that's a very handy feature I'll make more use of now that I know its existence.
Uhh, I just started playing Breath of fire 3 today and holy shit I'm loving it. the intro sold me instantly and the writing has been so whip smart to the point i'm at. This is quite enjoyable. I'm sad I'd only played the ones that got GBA versions back in my day (think that's 1-2?).
Breath of Fire 3 was first (and the best) of the series i played, and it was amazing.
I loved it so much.
This series deserves some pc ports and/or remakes.
Or just more entries.
Alright doing some globetrotting around Erdrea and I've got my own crack theory developing based on what I know of the world, the lore, the characters, and a bit of narrative understanding. Namely regarding the Luminary and the Darkspawn.
So, what if King Carnelian is not actually wrong about the Luminary being the Darkspawn? But I don't mean the Hero is the Darkspawn, because he's not the only Luminary now is he? The legends say the Luminary, the original one, fought the Lord of Shadows and then ascended to become a star in the sky, Erdwyn's Lantern that nice red one you can see in the background every now and then. Generally speaking, glowing red stars you can see in the sky in a JRPG have way more significance than just "Oh yeah we use it for navigation" sort of ways. Like "This is actually an evil god or something" sort of ways.
My current crack theory is that the original Luminary is the Darkspawn or corrupted by the Lord of Shadows. That red star isn't just a pretty celestial body, it's a prison or seal keeping him contained up there and soon enough he's coming back down to cause problems on purpose. Granted for this to be true I have to assume the best of King Carnelian in that he's not being manipulated he's just working off incorrect information and Heliodor is not massively corrupt and lacking in chivalry for turning the Hero's hometown and everyone in it to charcoal, not to mention being general assholes to just about every other kingdom.
Dragon Quarter/Breath of Fire 5 is easily one of the best RPGs on the ps2. It got a lot of guff for not being a 'breath of fire' game but even in that light I think it was amazing.
It's definitely different and will kick the crap out of you at first. That's probably one of it's charms though. Once you've figured out what it wants you can progress at a good click and combat can be really satisfying when you pull off cool combos.
The D rank/SL stuff is just cool, too. Gave me a reason to play risky. If I failed and got a game over it just meant I found some new stuff as I climbed again.
Dragon Quarter was a decent game, but i would not call it a Breath of Fire game as such, it has so little in common with other games in the series.
I think i played through Dragon Quarter like twice or something, but it never really grabbed me the way Breath of Fire 3 did.
It's probably indicative of something that i still have Breath of Fire 3 and 4 disks in my bookshelf while Dragon Quarter was traded away.
Should probably see if my PS2 still works at some point.
Haven't really used it since PS3 came out (which broke years ago and never replaced, even if i stil have some games for it).
It had Ryu, Nina, a dark dragon, a failing or failed world, it pretty much checks every consistent breath of fire-ism while also being the first one to make being a dragon actually be amazing.
It may not be a bog standard BoF, but much like Yakuza 7 I think the change elevated it.
Then again I thought 4 was kind of a slog and the resolution was unsatisfying. 3 was a good enough cap on the original trio while 4 was just this PhanStar3 tier dangling extra no one asked for. Dragon Quarter would have made an excellent start to another trilogy/arc.
I really wanted to like Octopath Traveler when it first came out, but I just couldn't get through the demo. Something about the combat just seemed to not click. But recently I've been listening to the soundtrack a lot (IT'S GOOD) and I decided to give it another shake.

Is Cyrus the thief ?
If so, when I had a full party I would use him as a MP generator.
Use his MP drain to get to full MP, then transfer half to my mage doing AOE attack. Then let his power tokens build up and do burst damage when the enemies shields are broken.

I love Dragon Quarter. Up there with my favourite RPGs on the PS2. Maybe it should have been its own separate series or something, but I'm glad that game exists. They just experimented with a bunch of wild ideas that made it stand out.

No, I think Marcus was the thief, and I went him first.
Yeah, if you picked up a magic user as your first character, I can see mp management being a problem early on.
I was really surprised how muched I loved the look of Octopath traveller - I normally don't like those low res pixel games, but it was lovely looking.
The lighting was great, and I loved the 3d-ish blurring of the fore and backgrounds and you moved into and out of the map.

My one complaint about BoF 3 and 4 is they really could stand to cut a system or two. There's a lot of little side content and combat systems that are pretty anemic and just kinda make it confusing for first time players that end up thinking they're more important then they are.
I have huge fondness for BoF3(I didn't even hate the desert!) but I'd absolutely need some way to skip battles and cheese the system a little to shave off some of the 35-40 hours.
3's also the only one I've played and I enjoyed it a lot, good solid SNES JRPG
PS1!
3 has any amazing soundtrack, too. In particular, the second map theme is great. I don't think I'd ever heard a jrpg use this kind of jazzy music at the time.

I was just realizing how crazy this year is for JRPGs/weeb games.
Ys 9
P5 Strikers
I guess I'll put BD2 here even though it was kinda meh
Scarlet Nexus
TWEWY 2
NMH3(You play as an Otaku I don't care I'm including it)
Tales of Arise
And all spread out through the year too.
I normally expect like 2-3 not trash weeb games in a year at most.

Kinda thinking of buying Tales of Berseria.

And in other news, i have returned to Arboria in DQ XI S

Monster hunter stories 2 is coming out in July and it looks amazing.
Legend of Mana remaster in June is probably the high point of the year for me. I'd often load it up on my vita for a replay every year or two but now I'll have a shiny new version!
My one complaint about BoF 3 and 4 is they really could stand to cut a system or two. There's a lot of little side content and combat systems that are pretty anemic and just kinda make it confusing for first time players that end up thinking they're more important then they are.
BoF3 definitely had some pacing and bloat issues. I really wish it handled the party better. There were two characters who were functionally worthless in regular battles, and no systems like 1/2/4 had to encourage either rotating people in or bothering to keep them up to date, which compounded with the blue magic system. It also wouldn't have gone awry if it had just flat out given double experience for everything AND cut the encounter rate in about half. Definitely a product of its time.
I bounced off hard from DQ though. Mandatory replaying and backtracking? No thanks. And that's on top of the weird combat system.

Would be so cool to see some of the classics in this new style with modern visuals.

The whole two planet thing is giving me heavy Tales of Eternia vibes.
Not only is that one of my favorites it also heavily featured the Spirits(also the mix and match system to get certain spells was so fun).
