It turns out Easter is going to be very profitable for me.

I'm going to be working both stat holidays, which is double time OT, in addition to the regular pay.

So an extra 32 hours pay on the following paycheque.

We don't expect the power company to fix our appliances. Stop expecting ISPs to know any fucking thing about your computers. It's most of why their support is dogshit. They've got too much ground to cover and their time is endlessly wasted by morons who can't work a router.

Difference is that ISPs provide the routers.

On my equipment, where I have my own router, that's one thing.

but if all the equipment is leased from the ISP, that's 100% their deal.

I know, which is my my ideal ISP is one that doesn't do that.

ISPs love the juicy fees that come with equipment rentals, but their equiptment and their service of it is generally so bad that nobody would willingly pay for it. It's like colleges that force students on to horrible meal plans. They only get away with it because of their monopoly position and captive customer base.

but also, all you can eat cafeteria as a college student with not a lot of extra money? yes please!

In college, our mealplans were more than double the cost of buying unlimited food at the grocery store. I know because my senior year, my housemates and I all took the fees that would normally go into a meal plan, put it in a shared checking account, and used that to buy groceries with absolutely no budgeting or voice of reason in any transaction.

Six boxes of novelty cereal? Yes. An ice cream cake? Yes. Giant steaks? Double yes. We ended the year with more than half the money left over and ate like careless lunatic trash kings.

Those meal plans are a HUGE scam.

It's more like airport restaurants being a huge scam

If you weren't on campus/in the airport the price/quality ratio would be radically different.

i guess "HUGE scam" just isn't the way i see it when things are slightly overpriced because they're convenient

I was just saying that the cost of your meal plan / airport sandwich isn't just covering ingredients and labor. The airport charges insane rents for the food vendors because they know that the vendors can recoup them, because people are trapped waiting for their flights. I don't know the exact subcontracting model the schools use with their dining halls, but I presume its similar.
It's actually worst than that. Larger Universities generally self perform the main cafeterias. Usually they use the work as part of their work study program. So their labor costs are so low, they are paying for labor with overpriced debt. Then they subcontract out high rental price space for chains to sell their stuff. And often use cutesy dining dollars to pay for it, or sometimes the dining dollars are as worthless as disney dollars and you have to use real money at those subcontracted place.

there is a certain charm to an old house sloppily converted into student studio apartments that is entirely lost in sort of soulless big student blocks

I think my favourite was my unstable ex's place, which had been subdivided into smaller sections by putting the bed up against the door leading to the living room the other apartment and pretending it wasn't there

as an aside, you know how much the doors inside your house are not soundproofed? It is a hell of an awkward moment when, after coming over and doing the deed, you can hear your girl's neighbour breathe as clearly as if she was breathing into your ear, thinking about how that, conversely, means that she just heard you two as clearly as if you were fucking on top of her.

anyways the point is if you know someone who is taking a semester in Bergen tell them to live anywhere but Fantoft it is just far enough away that it's just sad

I feel like an ISP requiring technical competency from a user is a fools errand. What are you going to do, drop 90% of paying customers because they cannot configure a network from scratch?

Likewise its predatory to sell customers 200mbs !!!$$$$ and monthly usage shows they use a fraction of that. Marketing makes sure people think changing the ISP or plan will boost a slow rig.

I think today's comic may just hit a little close to home. Would the same skit worded towards a used car salesman ruffled any feathers?

I sometimes think it sucks that dorms don't have kitchens, or that campus's don't have communal kitchens.

And then I remember who college students are.

BC tells a story of needing to help someone who was having a sobbing breakdown in the laundromat because it was a couple months into their first semester, they stank and had filthy clothes, and they did not know how to operate the washing machines.

i feel like this is like saying paying what restaurants charge is a huge scam

you did all the procurement and work yourself

    that costs something

I mean kind of. I love going to the store and recklessly buying a collection of dumb items. It is itself a fun activity so that was not a cost but a benefit for me. And then when it came to prep, we were 4 college aged males. We bought a lot of prepared foods that were very similar to what was being put out in the dining halls, only instead of not getting to choose, we got to pick all our favorites and they were always hot, which was a fair tradeoff I thought.

So the procurement and prep costs sort of canceled out for me before even taking into account the cost difference, but I could see it working out differently for other people.

I honestly think you could probably order out every single meal and still come in under budget though.

I worked at a really expensive private college kitchen and

1 - The ingredients were the cheapest Sysco produce possible
2 - The cooks are underpaid
3 - The food is usually below the quality of something like a hospital
    4 - The bosses all had a cocaine/painkiller problem

While I wouldn't go as far as to call it a scam, I will say that someone worked out the math to maximize the profits from that entire thing.

It's not been there that long, for the suez canal anyways:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_Fleet
In June 1967, the fifteen ships were sailing northwards through the Suez Canal as a war broke out between Israel and Egypt in what was to become known as the Six-Day War. Both ends of the canal were closed, and after three days it became apparent that the canal would remain blocked for some time as a result of the scuttling of ships to block passage. Fourteen ships were forced to anchor in the widest part of the Suez Canal, the Great Bitter Lake.
In October 1967, the officers and crews of all fourteen ships met on the Melampus to found the "Great Bitter Lake Association" which provided mutual support. Crew members continued to regularly meet on board their ships, organized social events, founded a yachting club and held the "Bitter Lake Olympic Games" to complement the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. Life boat races were arranged and soccer games were played on the largest ship, the MS Port Invercargill, while church services were held on the West German motorship Nordwind and movies were shown on the Bulgarian freighter Vasil Levsky. The Swedish Killara had a pool.

Troll - It doesn't matter what archetype you have, you're a Troll, and therefore you're the meatshield and human forklift.
The Irregulars is pretty fun so far. Extremely campy.

Integrated gateways are also bad, as far as I've heard and experienced

Buying a good router made a really big difference

Fuck I just bought a $30 4 port switch and it's far better than a wireless router as a main gateway. I have a wireless router on one of my ports, limited to 40 MBps, so I can use wifi on my phone but not absolutely destroy my bandwidth on my desktop.

Posts like this are where I feel like I live in some sort of weird black hole of technology. I'm lucky if I get 3MBps, over ethernet, at my place.

    I meant 40 mbps

I'm not sure what the difference is? I think technically we are paying for somewhere around 70 mbps (or MBps, idk), which is the tier down from 2 gb or w/e, but I've never even seen a tenth of that while actually using it for something other than a speed test.

Lowercase b is megabits, uppercase b is megaBytes. Most ISP's show megabits.

I would love an ISP that you call and say "my internet is out" and they ping your modem, which responds and says it has good signal to noise with 8 downlink, 2 uplink channels, and the ISP says "lol no it isn't sort out your shit" and then they hang up.

Those meal plans are a HUGE scam.

i feel like this is like saying paying what restaurants charge is a huge scam

you did all the procurement and work yourself

    that costs something

Its also a way to maximally convert FAFSA dollars into real money for the board of executives. And usually the dining dollars expire or have limitations or can't be used more than once a day or something equally messed up.

When we were Freshmen, my friend did the funbux dining plan and she had a bunch left over at the end of the year so she bought two pallets of Diet Dr Pepper and then we drank them all in two days.

American college is a pretty fucked institution, but, like most fucked institutions, it has its moments

I went to probably the cheapest nationally accreddited 4 year university and to be honest the educational aspect of it wasn't much different than when I went to ASU.

No greek life to speak of, no real party scene, barely any sports.

    It was great.

a buddy of mine that was a student here got this huge amount of money as part of some disability stipend thing since he's paralyzed.
At the end of the semester he still had so much money left he could empty every vending machine on campus and half the cafeteria it felt like.
He'd just pass out grocery bags full of drinks and snacks.

    Bless your heart.
