Welcome to the video game sales thread, where we discuss sales figures in the U.S., Europe and Japan and argue that the sales success/failure of *insert game or console here* is leading to the end of humanity as we know it. Also, wang references a-plenty.

To put the Wii's performance in perspective, the best non-Nov/Dec month was 690k by the PS2 back in June '02, when it got a big boost from a $100 price drop. Since then no one's broken the 600k barrier in a non-holiday month (DS was closest at 593k last June). Console-wise the best non-holiday month was this past Sept. when the 360 hit 528k and Wii 501k.

Also Smash alone outsold all the non-Wii games on the chart.

I guess it's a "bloodbath" because the Wii just managed to obtain the highest selling numbers outside of the holidays ever, a record that has been held by the PS2 since.. what.. 2002?

And not only that, but it destroyed the old record, which was what, something slightly over 600k? (edit: it was 690k)

And the NDS doing 700k? Also wrecking that 600+ record?

    700k.

    In March.

    That's.

    Pretty insane.

    During a recession. Geez.

Let's see, the previous record was during a month in 2002 when the PS2 sold a bit over 600,000, wasn't it?

    What the fuck.

April will have Mario Kart at its tail end plus residual Brawl sales. May will have motherfucking Wii Fit. And then the summer belongs to whatever Nintendo unveils at E3.

    D:

And what came out for the DS in March? FF:CC:ROF:RTFM?

Here is that whole IGN article. You guys missed when I edited in the Brawl number:
Wii and Brawl own the month.

US, April 17, 2008 - In March, Nintendo again defined industry momentum in both home and portable video games sales, according to the independent NPD Group, which monitors retail activity in the video game industry. More than 720,000 Wii systems sold in March, representing the highest monthly sales total outside of holiday months (November or December) to date, while Nintendo DS™ also sold through nearly 700,000 systems.

Nintendo also finished with the top-selling U.S. game of March. Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which launched March 9, came in at No. 1 with 2.7 million units sold.

"Nintendo systems represented 58 percent of all video game hardware sold in March in the United States," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "We expect our momentum to continue with big upcoming game launches like Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit."

Other March U.S. statistics, according to NPD, include:

Three Wii games finished in the top 10, including Super Smash Bros. Brawl at No. 1, Wii Play™ at No. 4, and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock at No. 7. Nintendo DS has now sold more than 19 million units in the United States alone since it launched in

Just to put this into a little more perspective, here are the NPD numbers for November & December of 2007:

    ___________360____ | PS3___ |__ Wii___
    Nov/2007 | 770,000_ | 466,000 | 981,000
    Dec/2007 | 1,260,000 | 798,000 | 1,350,000

In March of 2008, the Wii sold in the neighborhood of the 360's November numbers, and in the neighborhood of the PS3's December numbers.

Also, this is supposed to be the month that Nintendo had been shipping more quantities of Wiis to Europe because of the recession. Imagine if they had prioritized the US.

The last number we got on Wii production had them producing 1.8 million Wiis a month so about 1.8 million Wiis were sold worldwide this month unless there is a glut of them somewhere.

Wii sales are not that surprising since it's been supply constrained so they will sell how many they put on the shelves. The real question is how the heck did the DS sell 700k with no major releases or special editions.

Nintendo made a comment a bit ago that the were "dealing with the shortages" or something to that nature so perhaps production has increased again?

I saw Nintendo doing well this console round but not this well. Not owning Sony and microsoft. I really didn't see that at all. I saw 2nd place with most gamers having a 360 and a Wii or a PS3 and a Wii.
