Lets have a long conversation about our feelings... on horror games
Recently out for this holiday season we have,
Silent Hill Homecoming
From
wikipedia:
"Silent Hill Homecoming is the sixth installment in the Silent Hill survival horror video game series, developed by Foundation 9 studio, Double Helix Games.[3] The game was announced on July 11, 2007 by Konami at their E3 press conference, and was originally entitled Silent Hill V.[4] This entry in the horror series follows the journey of protagonist Alex Shepherd, a soldier returning from war, to his hometown of Shepherd's Glen, where he finds the town in disarray, and his younger brother missing. As he continues on his search to find his younger brother, he discovers more about the Order – the cult of Silent Hill – as well as the town's history, and his own past."
Siren Blood Curse (coming to disc in the UK)
From
wikipedia:
"Siren: Blood Curse, known in Japan as Siren: New Translation, is a stealth-based survival horror video game developed by Sony Computer Entertainment's Japan Studio for the PlayStation 3. It was released worldwide on July 24, 2008, in BD-ROM format for Japan, and on the PlayStation Network for North America and Europe. Prior to that, the game had also seen a limited "Survival Campaign" PlayStation Network release in Japan on July 13 and July 14, 2008. A BD-ROM version will be released in Europe in Fall of 2008.[1] The game is a reimagining of the first installment in the series, Siren, with many alterations to structure and content.[2]"
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky
Again from
wikipedia:
"S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, is the stand-alone prequel for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, a first-person shooter computer game by Ukrainian developer GSC Game World.[3] The game consists of a roughly 50/50 mix of new areas and old, remodeled areas from the previous game. The X-ray graphics engine has been updated to version 1.5 and includes DirectX 10 support. Additionally, the AI received an overhaul to accommodate the new faction wars feature."
Dead Space
From
wikipedia:
"Dead Space is a third-person action video game, being developed by EA Redwood Shores for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows. The player takes on the role of an engineer named Isaac Clarke, who battles a polymorphic alien species called the 'Necromorphs' on board a stricken interstellar mining ship.[2]"
IGN Video Review
Keeping in the spirit of the season, let's discuss the best current horror games, classic horror games, most memorable, tension as a gameplay mechanism, and share screenshots, anecdotes, etc (candy corn).
EDIT: Added dead space.

Call of Cthulhu
Also, Left 4 Dead should be coming out soon.
And, I know it isn't a good game, but I still want to get Rule of Rose, but the $40 price tag for even a used copy is too much.
I'm probably forgetting a ton of crap.
I'm maybe halfway through it.
I guess I'll end up having to bite the bullet and get it some day.
Another one I thought of: Curse - totally a budget title, but it cribs so much from Resident Evil gameplay wise that I had fun with it.
And of course, Eternal Darkness.
A group of teenagers go to a new amusement park, promised cash money if they can survive the night.
Every section is based on a b movie of some kind, and it's as over the top as it gets.
And the deaths are messy. You have the option of saving the lives of your friends along the way, but to get the true ending, you actually have to let them die.
You'll vomit with excitement.
Oh, and there's 'scare traps' everywhere, which increase your panic level if you fail to avoid them.
Edit: And now that I think about it, there were a number of mediocre to crap PSOne games that I played or owned at one time (OverBlood, Martian Gothic, Countdown Vampires). Also, this is the kinda of genre where you could say that games like Dino Crisis and Nightmare Creatures belong as well.
Though it looks like Dead Space is gonna' usurp it as the best survival horror game this gen.
Shivers

The Dark Eye

Those Siren shots I posted got me really excited, the game looks gritty as shit. Needs to come in the mail ASAP.
I love Shivers, but I would never call it anything even close to scary.
It creeped me out when it first came out.
One more
Undying
Ha, totally forgot about that game. I never played it, I stayed away because of the reviews.

Speaking of zombies, I thought this level from Painkiller was awesome
Dead City
The youtube video is too low quality to do it justice.
OH and this level was fucking creepy, again the youtube video doesn't do it justice, this guy is playing too well.

But seriously, fucking little zombie kids in burlap sacks run at you and explode, while they make these little baby noises, its fucking creepy as all hell.
I gotta take some shots of that.
Is that Painkiller level from the expansion, I assume? I only have the original and I don't remember that particular level. My favorite Painkiller level was easily the Asylum:

My alternate review system: Asylum? 10!
Still just as creepy as before.
Dark Sector is selling pretty cheap these days, and it's a lot of fun. Plays like a hybrid of RE4 and Gears of War.
First time through I had to take a break after an hour or two of playing. It started getting under my skin.
Note the creepiness.
Also, [unrelatedrant]gimp is a pain in the ass, do I really have to install photoshop just to batch convert? And what is up imageshack redirecting me to all these sign up websites, what a pain in the ass.[/unrelatedrant]

They were fun.
The "scariest" thing I think I've seen that I really enjoyed was the way the Yamibito's in Siren 2 would sometimes screech upon "death". It was just such an inhuman sound. I loved it. Gave me the chills everytime. That's the kind of thing I enjoy in horror games. Not "BOO!" moments. Being freaked out by little things is so much better.
I've not played either of the Condemn games, but I ran across this video a while ago of a bunch of mates playing Condemned 2. Spoilers obviously. The guy's shriek as he runs around playing it is priceless.
Condemned 2
Also, while Dead Space will probably be a good game, I very much doubt it'll be the genre-redefining thing most people seem to expect.
THEY WANT ME TO LOOK THROUGH THE WINDOW.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
And I can't play through a Fatal Frame game. Any of them. I absolutely can not handle them.
Dark Seed was pretty damned scary when I was a kid. It was very unnerving. Most people are too young to have played it, though. I was 15 when it came out. >_>
Lovecraft was a huge influence on the whole thing. It even took place in Providence, Rhode Island and featured gods from the outer reaches of space. So good.
I have to get around to doing my other two playthroughs sometime. Maybe when there are less awesome games to play (probably never, but hey, one can dream).
Eternal Darkness was exceptional in every single aspect, frightening, atmospheric, flawlessly voiced and with genuine shocks and twists. A perfect blend of Lovecraft and action I cant stress enough how great it is.
