This thread is all about the great journalist Patrick "Tricky Scoops" Klepek.

He's a rock god.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnhZrc58FYw

He hosted a pretty cool game jam

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_HlwEcN0rk

Also he likes to play with Japanese toilets.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9cEZc8VZ5o

Here's a list of Patrick articles I think are real good. (Not going to link the ones with massive spoilers in them.)

48 Hours Later: Thoughts on the MolyJam

$1.6 Million and counting.

A Day Late And $28 Short

Politics, The Third Rail of Gaming

On Games, Reviews, And Criticism: Part 1, Part 2

The Humans Are Dead, Long Live the Beasts

Eight Women, Eight Responses, and One Dead Island Riptide Statue

Also he's part of some personality driven gaming website or something. I think it's called Game Bomb.

I got a regular 3ds. I'd rather have it be more portable.

anyways both fire emblem and etrian odyssey 4 come out in february. I've still got steam games left to play! but I have almost finished VLR.

So I started up Uncharted 1 and decided to play on Normal. I thought, "The combat probably isn't as bad as I remember it."

    An hour later...

Nope. It is exactly as bad as I remember it. TIME FOR EASY MODE!

I love Uncharted 1 so much

I love the combat a lot

Playing it on the highest difficulty was like a combat puzzle

Which is something people say about Halo but I never quite got that from Halo?

  • Options
    StiltsStilts Registered User regular
I guess I could see them as combat puzzles if so many of the battles didn't rely on more enemies spawning from the ether.

At that point it's less like a puzzle and more like trial-and-error plus rote memorization.

i did not like the first uncharted. i liked the things it was trying, but i don't think it closed the deal on many of them.

I can't think of a single game where waves of enemies don't come from specific points

    Mark of the Ninja

    Every Splinter Cell

And basically any game where you could consider the combat to be a "puzzle."

Besides, the point is not that "oh no, this game uses spawning enemies!"

The point is that--if it really is meant to be a combat puzzle--having enemies spawn from points that you'd have no way of predicting without trying and dying first is bad puzzle design. You could plan out your initial strike really well, but then enemies spawn behind you and just destroy you. What defense do you have against that besides a) being lucky or b) memorizing that spawn and trying again?

Oh, I forgot another example of a really good "combat puzzle game" that doesn't use enemy spawns.

    Hotline Miami

Uncharted 1 had such a bullshit difficulty curve

And FUCK the jetski segments CHRIST were those awful

    And all the sixaxis bullshit...

Basically that game exists to make Uncharted 2 look even more impressive than it would in a vacuum

Eterian Odyssey 4 I am guessing.

The RPGs sounded cool cept for the draw your own map feature. Is that an option or something you gotta do?

Also, there's a story-thing that weirder me out this time that I didn't remember thinking was off my first time through.

    (Really early-game Uncharted 1 spoilers)
So after you explore the U-boat, Sully is shot and--as far as Drake can tell-killed.

This is a guy who has been Drake's closest friend for many years.

He was just shot dead in front of him.

And Drake just goes back to his normal wise-cracking attitude, like, five minutes later, his only display of grief being a typical "I'm gonna kill the dude that did this!" line.

He can't be a wise-cracking Indiana Jones type if he's just moody and upset the whole game

    Same!

Except Tomb Raider instead of BioShock

Also I probably should have played some Ni no Kuni today instead of Sleeping Dogs, seeing as that's a game I've already beaten the hell out of

    But it's so good

    Yeah, but
In that case, why even bother "killing" Sully? The player has only known him for half an hour, so I don't give a shit.

And Drake himself doesn't really seem to give much of a shit either.

There's just no emotional weight at all to that scene, which is especially weird when you get more context on Drake and Sully's relationship in 2 and 3.

Also Uncharted is making me really hope that Tomb Raider turns out to be good.

Because it looks like it could be great.

But I just can't shake this worry.

The best thing about Patrick, I think, is just how well he fits in with all the other guys there. There he is, a then-26 year-old kid, joining a team that has known each other and been working in the industry together for more than a decade. And he does fine.

More than fine, really, since he fits a role that none of the others there can cover well, and does it quite well in my opinion.

At the very least, it'll be interesting

Every time they "reinvent" Tomb Raider, it's always interesting, even if it doesn't turn out particularly well

People shit all over Angel of Darkness, perhaps rightly so, but you could tell they actually tried changing it up severely with that game

And Tomb Raider Legend is straight up one of my favorite games ever

That newest trailer has me so damn excited
