Well that's that, finished with Trails of Cold Steel. 99 hours playthrough one, 52 hours NG+. All set with my A0 rank and level 80 Rean to transfer over.
My first platinum trophy as well, since this is the first Sony console i've owned since they implemented the trophy system.

A year or so ago I bought Romancing SaGa for PS2 but just could not get anywhere in it. Nothing made sense at all.
The SaGa games are dense as fuck but really really good if the player also enjoys doing the homework required to figure them out.
I played the first hour or two blind, saw the first level up/skill up/whatever up guy, got really confused, and found a guide.
Restarted the game, followed everything exactly, still got incredibly confused at the power up shop, found the first real dungeon (ice cave?), realized how ludicrously it wanted me to grind for the first serious encounter in the game, realized that I'd also already missed a ton of content just by spending game time leveling up, and stopped playing.
I will go to bat for Resonance of Fate. I had a lot of fun with that game.
Resonance of Fate was a really cool battle system; but I dropped it fairly quickly because the encounter design could be pretty brutal and the same stuff that made the battle system cool also made it pretty punishing to any mistakes.
I've considered going back to it, but I have SO MANY games now that it's a very low priority.

RoF's combat got really repetitive, and even insignificant encounters would end up taking too much time.

Philip Kollar @ Polygon has a pretty strong review (9/10)for Persona 5, a game set to be released 04 04 2017
One bit of the review caught my attention though, and I thought it might be a good warning or way to set expectations. It's a bummer.
Persona 5 wears progressive values on its sleeves, which makes its approach to non-straight romance all the more baffling. Joker can choose to start a relationship with every single female party member and non-player confidant in the game; none of the men are romanceable. This is despite the fact that one of the male party members is heavily implied to be at least bisexual, claiming to have no interest in the female form outside of art and often interacting with Joker in a flirty manner.
The lack of same-sex relationship options in Persona 5 would be little more than a frustrating omission, but the game pushes it into much more aggravating territory in a few scenes. Specifically, there are two recurring gag characters who are clearly homosexual. They show up at a couple of points throughout the game specifically to act effeminate and stereotypical, and to freak out Ryuji by flirting with him. Essentially, some of Persona 5’s only examples of queer characterization are there as a terrible joke.
This would be disappointing in any game in 2017. For a game that’s explicitly about social reform and youth being misunderstood, it’s a complete breakdown, a hamfisted misunderstanding of the values and diversity of a younger generation.
It's a interesting read! Philip seems to think the characters / Social Links were a bit less engaging, but that the main story was really strong.
I'm excited to pick it up
It's time to wake up, get up, and get out there.
We've got to raise our voice against lairs!
Feel this anger, like fire!
If we hold on, life won't change.

It's a Japanese game, so I can't really say I'm terribly surprised honestly.
Enjoying Japanese media tends to require some degree of compartmentalization, sadly.
I'm a bit bummed because Persona 5 could have been an example of Japanese Media really succeeding within those waters.
Hard to comment on content I haven't seen, though.
Really, disregarding nationality of origin, a good portion of media that includes LGBT characters, use those characters poorly,
or at it's worse, as a way to gross out straight folk.

It remains to this day an incredibly common thing in Japanese media and I don't think that, domestically, they get the same kind of backlash for it
And I doubt they really pay all that much attention to the international reaction, and if they do it's hand waved away as cultural differences

it's so weird, because japan used to be really, really queer prior to the meiji restoration/tokugawa shogunate
Well, it's still super queer in some ways.
There is a huge market for LGBT specific Manga and Light Novels. (Though. a segment of it, has a weird fetishist lens that's catered toward straight consumers?)
Outside of that niche market though, mainstream Japanese media tends to treat these relationships and characters as a prank.
It's frustrating to see such a split in markets.
it's probably more along the lines of guys thinking gay people are gross but looking up lesbian porn which is performed by straight women and caters to men
it's hard enough to get western devs to pay attention, getting ones that live in a different country and speak a different language and have different cultural norms is an even more difficult task
P5 is on Tuesday. I am out of games today. I would like the comfort of a good Jurp to tide me over to Tuesday. Can anyone give me some nice recommendations? PC/PS4 preferable.

That sale on the PS Store was tempting but it was basically the same price as the normal price for buying the boxed copy on amazon.
Plus the whole ending sequence really got to me, in a way that very few pieces of media ever have.

If they do a PS4 PSN release of 1 and 2 before 3 I'm just going to have to buy them again, and play them both again.
All the years playing jrpgs I thought I knew what good battle themes were. Then I played these Falcom games.
I knew nothing.

That's like the worst battle theme in the game Phy! ok ok I kid. The final final boss song in Trails of Cold Steel 2 is the worst one in the game.
edit: Oh it's a combo of all of them. Nevermind. Still, heated mind is not one of the better ones (they are all good though)
This is the best theme of both games hands down.

Also all Falcolm games sound similar. Certain songs in Trails of Cold Steel would be right at home in Ys.

Nothing like attaching 3 barrels to your extended clip and stack of 4 scopes.
I love that your guns eventually looked like cars attached to handles with the outsides removed.

I already fried all those circuits getting through Zelda; I doubt I'll be willingly subjecting myself to that sort of thing again any time soon.
Although I haven't even found time to play Persona 3 or 4 yet so I guess my actual purchasing plans aren't immediately affected.
Yeah the lyrics to nier's songs get weird
