It also helps a whole lot that there are inexpensive legitimate resources to watch most shows that anyone would actually care about now.

I think it's a sign of how good the community is here now that we can have an anime thread and not turn it into 1) gross pervy bullshit and 2) obliquely talking about how maaaybe *wink wink* you can find this anime on certain websites *wink wink*

Or maybe we're just desperate to talk about japanese cartoons and once we become complacent the real garbage will start. But I doubt it!

I'd like to think we've all grown in the 10 years since we last had an anime thread. Our more mature, worldly outlook tempers discussion into a more cerebral undertaking.

yeah if we had been talking about anime 10 years ago it would have largely been pirated stuff

Hey, did you know that the melody of the opera part of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann's "Libera Me from Hell" is lifting from a little known Bach piece named... "Komm Susser Tod"?

    Yeah, layers, man.

Yeah that's a big help for sure. Crunchyroll and Funimation both have... basically everything I'd want to watch? Plus Hulu and Netflix's selections are pretty decent too. I can't think of a show that isn't available on at least one of those services.

What amazes me is that we can somewhat talk about horny stuff without being gross about it. There's been several pages focusing on sexuality in various anime and for the most part it's treated in a mature and wholesome manner of discussion

I watched the first episode of Fairy Tail and it seems... fine? Definitely probably a bit horny, though.

Fairy Tail is like, the most stock standard by the tropes shonen series. Which isn't a bad thing! I liked Fairy Tail myself.

My recommendation for people is read/watch until the end of the Tower of Heaven, and if you're not sold, it probably won't get better for you.

I was into it in the first episode. But yeah, it does seem stereotypically shonen. Plucky main character with goofy sidekick is very powerful and then subsequently fights more and more powerful foes, pushing his abilities to the limit, etc.

The animation seems nice, anyway. Does the quality keep up?

My opinion of Fairy Tail as someone who inexplicably watched a lot of it because of having a lot of time to kill is it's just kind of there, being inoffensive but also unexciting. It's just a terminally rote shonen battle manga/anime. Prepare for 500000000 episodes of the same old, long, dragged out, extremely long, predictable shit as you've seen in any other shonen battle show, except it all feels phoned in creatively.

Fairy tail is worse about how it depicts women than One Piece.

I think only Erza gets depicted relatively well and even then they find every goddamn excuse to strip her mostly naked on a regular basis, at least in the manga. Not sure if anime changes that

Fairy Tail is weird to me.

For a good while I liked it quite a bit. At one point, I was watching the anime with my brother, because I liked it and wanted to show it to him, because I thought he would as well.

Then, I’m not sure what it is. Around the time we got to the arc that introduced Wendy, I started feeling embarrassed about it. And this wasn’t my first time getting that far in the story; I’d read the comic well past that part. Maybe it was another example of me losing faith in the medium after SAO? There was a time after that when I was just seeing problems everywhere. Whatever it is, all at once I could only see the problems, mostly with it being horny way too often, and some of the stuff about it being repetitive. I just didn’t want to watch any more and didn’t watch the next episode the next day. I haven’t since.

And I feel kinda sad about that? Like, it had been a thing I enjoyed, and I’m not sure if I’d like it again if I went back, or if I’d just call myself a hypocrite for it.

The new version also doesn't suffer from early 2000s anime eyes.
