Plot thickens over Lib Dem candidacy in ultra-marginal Canterbury: party HQ want to impose new person after candidate stood down to help Labour's Rosie Duffield. But local party source says they are *very* resistant to standing someone, and would not help the campaign. Lib Dem source says there are four "approved" candidates in local party who could replace Tim Walker, who stepped down, and all are refusing to stand. LD HQ can - probably will – thus impose a candidate from outside. But they'll find the local party unwilling to offer much help.
The Lib Dem source says: "The poor unfortunate who is imposed will not find themselves in a very happy position. They will be met with, at best, ambivalence, at worst outright negativity." The candidate will, the source says, find local activists campaigning in other seats. The Canterbury Lib Dem source stresses that wanting to help Duffield is not an endorsement of Corbyn, and they understand the view of party HQ. But they say the situation in their seat – where Duffield has tiny majority over ultra-Brexiter Tory hopeful – is very particular.
Surely no one can argue that FPtP is the simpler system after this election's game-y nonsense. I think Thursday is the deadline for getting on (or off) the ballot papers, so we'll find out how many of the Brexit party members registered as Independent Brexiteers.
FPtP is fine so long as you pair it with ranked choice voting. That's the problem.
Well hopefully if anyone but the Tories get in, they will see how hard it was and make some fundamental changes there if only so they can game the system to keep the Tories out.
I saw the (previously mentioned in this thread) North Carolina license "BREXIT" the other night. I still don't understand it. Also, shockingly, it wasn't on a British car.
Brexit has become a right wing totem world wide. The nationalistic xenophobes are actually very internationally coordinated.
Fascism has always been an international movement.
As he did during his leadership campaign, Johnson is limiting his press facetime because why bother risking a mistake when you can just not turn up and win anyway?
I love the awkwardness of the presenter when he really starts ramping up his anti Brexit speech. I assume they were expecting a pro leave farmer.

Bishop Auckland's my home town! Its weird seeing it on the telly, and stranger still them managing to interview a remainer over 50. Its long been a potential BNP/UKIP/Brexit party seat kind of place, as the local labour council are utterly inept.
I like how she called him an obvious Labor supporter even though he never said any such thing. Way to dismiss him entirely because she fucked up.
I picked up on that too, an utterly disgraceful thing for a BBC presenter to say. To just make an unfounded partisan judgement on a mans political views then dismiss him because of it. I'm tempted to make a complaint.
In fairness, after that speech I'd agree that he wouldn't be a likely Tory supporter. I don't know the situation there, are the other parties viable options?
He could theoretically support any party. Chances are he isn't a Tory, but that party just booted out a bunch of its own MPs who would have agreed with everything this guy said.
During a visit to Stainforth, the prime minister was accused of doing little to help flood victims by one resident.
The woman, clutching a wheelbarrow alongside the troops sent to the area, told him: "I'm not very happy about talking to you so, if you don't mind, I'll just mope on with what I'm doing."
"You've not helped us up to press. I don't know what you're here today for."
Another resident told him: "You've took your time Boris, haven't you?", to which Mr Johnson replied: "We've been on it round the clock."

Kate Hoey, Brexiteer Labour MP for Vauxhall has also announced that she won't be voting for Labour next election. She's going DUP.
Did anyone else have that in the sweepstake?

Not Corbyn's fault that Lib Dems hate social democrats more than they hate Hard Brexit.
Labour flatly refused to enter into the talks for Remain parties leaving the field clear for others more likely to win.
Labour and the Lib Dems are tearing chunks out of each other (Labour also took time today to take a swipe at the SNP for something that happened in 1979), but one of those parties has stepped aside in some constituencies and one hasn't. I don't know what Labour's plan for the Lib Dems morally superior path would be, other than disbanding entirely and willing their worldly possessions to Labour.
Also the Lib Dems hate social democrats? What? Their objections to forming a coalition have focused entirely on Corbyn himself. I suspect Corbyn would prefer the term 'socialist', anyway.

That's a campaign slogan right there.
Easily the best quote of the whole debacle.

Maybe they (and the other parties) can do the same to the BBC over theirs too while we're at it?
Farage is trying his best to get a peerage or similar out of Boris.
Colour me surprised that a man known for being a slippery piece of shit ends up acting like a slippery piece of shit!

I think she said she changed it for the election and plans to move. 'tis the Principled thing to do.
For given, Hoey-esque definitions of "principled", of course.

Glad to see him out and about.
So happy though that we didn't have the chaos that would've ensued if he was made PM and not Cameron :x
