A bunch of shelter-in-place orders coming down in the Piedmont Triad region of NC, most notably Winston-Salem (Forsyth County) from 5pm tomorrow until April 16th and Greensboro (Guilford County) effective "until modified or rescinded."
Mecklenburg county (Charlotte area) order started today at 8am.
Pitt County NC (ECU, Greenville) also starts today. I imagine the surrounding counties are also the same.
I am so proud of my governor in case no one could figure that out. I would cheerfully put a check next to this man's name on a Presidential ballot, the way he's thought things through and handled them in this time of craziness is incredible. He also set the limit for public gatherings to I think to ten or more with yesterday's statement along the lines of 'I am so proud of most of you who have really taken all this seriously despite the cost and for the rest of you I guess I have to sign something so here you go'
There was an article for a few days in the Washington Post about how this crisis shows why so many presidents and many of the better ones came from being governors of the states. In general many of the governors have stepped up and shown leadership. Cuomo of New York being the face but a lot of others. Republicans and Democrats. Not all of course.

It's more that being governor gives you a lot more opportunity to do things that give you a good looking resume without the messiness of making sausage in Congress. Governors just have a lot of power to unilaterally do things to help this crisis. Senators or House Members, as we see right now with the relief packages, do not.
This is also why it's important that the President use the powers of the executive to act decisively in these kind of situations.

You should probably not be hoarding chloroquine to treat SARS2.
This thread is stunning. The lead French investigator and team behind that non-randomized chloroquine paper has a history of faking data and being banned from journal publications. But there's more... (1/2)
the lead investigator of the study that was published in the "peer reviewed" journal (after one day of review) is also… the Editor in Chief of that journal. (2/2) https://t.co/dwOX57BXKN

Holy fuck! This is on the level of Phalanx from world war Z..
Governments around the world have been using this to treat people.
That image linked in the first tweet is from an unrelated 2005 article, I believe. Pretty sure that's just the evidence that this lab has a history of faking data.
The anecdotal reports I’ve seen around chloroquine have typically involved a massive cocktail of treatments, which seemed like it would make it hard to ID what’s actually working and what’s not.

It’s almost like the president touting a miracle cure Dr. Oz style instead of stepping back and letting the medical and scientific community do its job is political malpractice
So far it's 77% men in intensive care, and patient median age is 64.
Are these worldwide numbers, or only the numbers for Sweden?
Only Sweden.
Won't link anything because sources are in Dutch, but the picture here is much the same. For deaths, it was (a few days ago) 70% male, average age 82. A lot of elderly are refusing recuscitation / ventilation here due to multiple pre-existing conditions, so Dutch deaths are (hopefully) frontloaded.

One of the oddities is this virus seems to affect men more than women. This has been a common strain in a lot of reporting.
There are a lot of possible reasons suggested from blood pressure medication to smoking is culturally more male to just men tend to be in worse health at older ages. I have seen it range from a ton of possibilities.
This chloroquinine thing might be the thing I’m most furious about with Trump and his fellow con artists but I dunno ask me again in 3 hours
My legitimate desire for a cure/ treatment is the only thing keeping me from looking forward to his getting egg on his face when clinical trials likely come back inconclusive.
How does the individual stimulus work anyway? Is it totally hands off for the individual? Does the federal government just check based on your social security number?
I won't be getting a stimulus check based on the rules, which is fine and I'm very happy that people who need it will get it, but I admit I don't know how it works and I'm curious.

I get there'd be a language barrier but I would like a link on the bolded subject if it's not too much trouble for you.
I just got this email from DFAS, the Defense Finance and Accounting Service.
Defense Finance and Accounting Service
The U.S. Army is reaching out to gauge the interest of our retired officers, noncommissioned officers and Soldiers who would be willing to assist with the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic response effort should their skills and expertise be required.
These extraordinary challenges require equally extraordinary solutions and that's why we're turning to you -- trusted professionals capable of operating under constantly changing conditions. When the Nation called -- you answered, and now, that call may come again.
If interested and you remain qualified to serve in any of the following health care specialties: 60F: Critical Care Officer; 60N: Anesthesiologist; 66F: Nurse Anesthetist; 66S: Critical Care Nurse; 66P: Nurse Practitioner; 66T: ER Nurse; 68V: Respiratory Specialist; 68W: Medic - we need to hear from you STAT!
If you are working in a civilian hospital or medical facility, please let us know. We do not want to detract from the current care and treatment you are providing to the Nation.
While this is targeted at medical specialties, if you are interested in re-joining the team and were in a different specialty, let us know your interest.
[name, official title, and contact information redacted by me]
DFAS is the government organization that pays military personnel and retirees, along with literally the entire defense department. And I got this directly from them, not a “Here’s what DOD is currently thinking!” that I get in veteran news letters.
I’ve only been retired for about nine months, so I cannot be sure if this is common or not, but it’s a thing that is officially happening.
My greatest fear of the Trump administration is that he does something so horrible that necessitates he enact the Retired Reserve Force, which means the President can force me back into service if he deems it necessary for national security.
I was 11B (infantry) so I’m not what they are currently looking for and this is just a request, not an order, but it still scared the shit outta me when I started reading it.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed during a morning press conference that Trump wants to station soldiers near the Canada-US border.
American government officials inside Donald Trump’s White House are actively discussing putting troops near the Canadian borders in light of U.S. border security concerns around the coronavirus pandemic, sources tell Global News.
Few people cross from Canada into the United States at an unofficial point each year but the goal of the policy would be to help border guards detect irregular crossers, the sources said.

How is Canada doing with their epidemic? I haven't really read anything about them. I'm wondering if anyone would be trying to get from there into the US during all this...

Better than the US, though that's not saying a lot. Still fairly early days here, relatively, but a lot of our stuff closed around the same time initial waves of restrictions were put in place in the US. Lots more testing and a public healthcare system will mean the response overall should be better, though we're a federation so to an extent the response is still patchwork. The federal government has done a decent job so far trying to coordinate and provide financial relief.
For direct reference, here's the stats page for Alberta (where I'm at), the fourth largest province with the fourth-most covid-19 cases:
https://covid19stats.alberta.ca/ - It does some cool stuff like break down by area, whether cases are thought to be community spread or not by day, etc.

I can speak only for Québec but Premier Legault has been an exemplary leader in this crisis. He's taking all neccesary measures to protect the population and we've been listening. No partisan bullshit, all the opposition parties are behind him as well. I'm confident we'll make it just fine

The Canadian government says it's "strongly opposed" to the idea of sending American troops to the border to intercept illegal migrants as part of that country's response to the coronavirus pandemic.
"This is an entirely unnecessary step, which we would view as damaging to our relationship," said Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland
"We understand the concerns about the coronavirus. We share those concerns, very much," she said.
"What we have said is, 'We really do not believe at all that there would be a public health justification for you to take this action. Of course, it's up to you to decide for yourselves.' And we've said we really don't think this is the right way to treat a trusted friend and military ally."

My opinion is this is a bad idea. Ventilation isn't a simple thing and I am not a doctor.
Edit: Article outlines reasons from an anesthesiologist.
It's unethical in my opinion to treat two people at a lower standard because you're determined to "do something" if that something generates an additional harm.
Everyone is determined to do everything within their power without anyone calling them out on it because it's scary and feels yucky to admit there's nothing we can do.
Edit2: article implies it's approved, not necessarily happening.

I thought this was supposed to be a last resort measure. Not implemented unless shit hit the fan and were overloaded. Does this mean shit hit the fan already?
