I don’t think a semi-sane candidate gets through their primary; they had many such options in 2016 and chose none of them, and I doubt their inclinations have improved.
Pence might think he can win it but that dude makes white bread look interesting
Frankly I'm not even sure that's true.
The closest to a "normal" republican I can remember was Jeb Bush and it felt like he didn't even want to be running from day one.
I remember the rest of them being "jesus-tap-dancing-christ" levels of terrible.
Didn't Kasich run in the primary? He was perfectly sane, denounced Trump early, then vanished forever after Trump put his head on a pike and drug his corpse around the square for the sin of doing a thing Obama asked.
A lot of us around here consider even vanilla “inoffensive” Republicans to be Literally Satan Incarnate. The policies that go along with basic conservatism nowadays are pretty heinous. And what we’ve seen in the last 3 or 4 decades is that milquetoast Democrats are better at balancing the budget than Republicans, so what even is the point of conservatism besides racism, misogyny, and empowering the ultra rich?
If Trump can’t run because he is impeached, we’ll get some run of the mill, “normal”-seeking Republicans trying to claw their party back to a place where they can try to do draconian, backwards policy while looking stately and moderate to the average American.
But I mean, Trump showed there are degrees of “bad”. I doubt you’ll find anyone who thinks that even W was as terrible as he was. And W was a literal war criminal.
So there is value beyond just keeping Trump running again. If we go back to non-Trump styled Republicans, things will be very bad for the country but not as bad. But we know this style of politician depresses turnout on the right. And we will have shown that electing Trump is going to lead to impeachment and (hopefully, but I’m not holding my breath) removal, along with losing the ability to run again after breaking the law so egregiously.
To talk about "non-Trump Republicans" is to discount the fact that Trump is the ur-manifestation of Republican platforms and talking points. His behavior and beliefs aren't an aberration, nor is his holding office. It's the natural outcome of decades of constantly elevated rhetoric and hyperbole.

the telling thing to me is there is a multi-billion dollar organization in the Lincoln Project filled to the brim with "responsible" and "serious" Republicans and all they seem to have accomplished is slicing off a section of the Democratic donor base
Talking about "regular" republicans also ignores the 3-4 internal party revolutions that occured in the last 30 years.
Are we talking Obama reactionary Tea Party Republicans? or Clinton reactionary "compassionate conservative" Republicans? or government shuttering Newt Gingrich Republicans? or farther back when they were literally tratorious genociders both foreign and domestic?
Dude, Satan was just asking questions and encouraging humanity to make their own choices. Satan never tried to take anyone's rights away or tell them who they couldn't marry. There's very little in actual biblical sources about Satan splitting up famlies or putting children in cages.
It's insulting to compare Satan to Republican policies.
The entire GOP is all kinds of messed up, "evil" if you want to use that particular term, but it's a sliding scale. Trump is at the extreme, "throw kids in cages and incite violent revolution to install a fascist regime" end of the scale. The endgame of that is total societal collapse, either instead of or following after a fascist regime lasting god knows how long. I'd much rather their party dial it back to the Mitt Romney section of the scale, and not have to live through all that, thank you very much.

I dunno, Marco Rubio feels like a classic Republican. That might just be compared to like, Trump and Cruz and Christie, though.
Marco Rubio is just a younger Lindsey Graham
he has absolutely no principles and will say whatever he thinks is the popular thing in the moment, lacking a single shred of courage to defend his statements once the winds change
i guess it all depends on your definition of classic Republican, but he doesn't embody anything at all except clumsy attempts at opportunism
Isn't that what a Republican is? I don't remember them being anything other than that.
Maybe in the past it was. Not anymore. God, can you imagine how different the country would be if Republicans just always went with whatever was the most popular? They've been stonewalling shit that polls over like 80% approval for the last decade, for fuck's sake.
No. They only care about saying and doing whatever they think will make Democrats mad, regardless of whether it's a thing they themselves are doing or have in the past done.
Republicans actually care about extremely unpopular things. Remember, the classic establishment republican party is a political engine that exists to turn white supremacy into tax cuts and deregulation. They leverage their inherent structural advantages and appeal to their base to pass extremely unpopular legislation that the donors want.
At this point I think Trump running for office in 2024 is best case scenerio for the return to sanity. Getting a "normal" candidate in the GOP election just provides more cover for the majority of their loons doing extremist shit. Trump continues to expose the Republican party for what it is, and that seems to be the only way to heal the nation.
If Trump doesn't see jail for attempting to murder half of congress and his own Vice President, we are saying that there is no risk to the next maniac that wants to do the same. Legitimizing him by allowing him to run again in four years would be insane.
I’m not a lawyer, but the article asserts that Trump may be criminally liable for the insurrection because of his status as President, which gives him a duty to act. Unlike say Giuliani or Trump Jr, whom can use the First Amendment as cover for political speech, the President is in a position to prevent violence and there’s burgeoning evidence (that the article covers, but we pretty much already know) that Trump both cheered on and assisted the insurrection by ignoring his presidential duties and failed to timely condemn the violence, nor gave rapid orders to reinforce the Capitol Building even after it obviously and publicly turned violent.
If true, Trump is straight fucked.

Arguably Satan took advantage of knowing how to manipulate people to motivate people to do things that hurt people. Seducing the first two people got us childbirth and consequences so that was a pretty harsh start. He also liked to goad God into killing people. Like yeah, it's God's fault that he does it, but Satan doesn't need to kick the divine hornets nest.

I think if we just give the Demon Party a chance then eventually moderates like Belial and Lilith will seize control and serve as a loyal opposition.

Yeah, I see the radicalized effect of modern conservatism a lot these days. Its... deeply unsettling.
The GOP formula for a while now is "stoke fears and encourage outrage." The effects of being constantly told by "your" people (see: Republicans) that you should be terrified of X, Y or Z are debilitating and the results is basically Q Anon.
I grew up steeped in it and if it wasn't for a very serious course correction when I was 17 or 18 I likely would've ended up one of these pieces of shit you saw storming the capitol.
Shit is deadly and I don't know how to combat it. It's a molotov cocktail of disinformation, racism, and anti intellectualism nurtured by a century of religious fundamentalism. At least in my neck of the woods, anyway.
Hey guys I would be very grateful if this thread didn't become a venue for guessing who the GOP is going to put forward in 2024 or why the 2016 primaries turned out the way they did.
Sen. Tommy Tuberville says President’s impeachment ‘makes no sense’
“Well, we have the worst pandemic in my lifetime, and we’re worrying about impeaching a guy that only going to be there seven more days. Makes no sense to me,” Tuberville said.
Tuberville also questioned the timing of the inauguration on January 20.
“We probably could have had a swearing-in and inauguration later after we got this virus behind us a little bit. Again, we’re talking about Washington, D.C.,” Tuberville said.
However, the 20th Amendment to the Constitution requires that the inauguration and swearing-in of a new President take place on January 20th. It wasn’t clear if Tuberville was aware of that during the interview.
Do congressmen take the same kind of oaths to uphold the constitution the president does? It sounds like they just scroll to the bottom and click 'agree', same as when I'm installing a new game.

Because he's the last Republican to have spoken to the press recently. Give them a bit and I'm certain someone else will say something just as dumb, if not dumber.

Tuberville is also new to politics and got famous for being a mediocre college football coach in a state without anything else to watch on Saturdays.
The choice was between him, a qualified incumbent Democrat, or an admitted pedophile judge that had been fired and censored multiple times.
I guess Alabama still chose better than they could have

I actually don’t know that Roy Moore made it to the Republican primary this time. Tuberville was up against Sessions trying to get his seat back after getting fired by Trump.
That said Tuberville is an idiot.

You're preaching to the choir. I don't want a Trump presidency as much as anyone else, but the moment someone not as extreme as Trump runs for Republican office is the moment Republican and centrist voters will forget all about Trump and the party that backed him. The party is the problem, not Trump. The party is what has enabled Trump and given him power, and the party will continue to exist and even now has a stronger Trump backing now than ever.
Without someone as extreme as Trump as the figurehead, Republican, "Centrist" and ignorant voters will just be "well, it's not Trump so can't be that bad! vote for R!"
I don't want any Republicans in power for the next two decades, but I don't see that happening if someone semi-sane runs because people are idiots and love returning to "normal".

It's also why, unfairly or not, these states can get stereotyped for how their voting base thinks.
Conservatives got outraged by Obama's "they cling to guns or religion" statement, but when they send unqualified moronic dipshits like Gohmert and Tuberville to acongres, they're kinda proving that point.
I may not agree with (and fucking despise) some Republican politicians, but I can at least see that their ignorance is intentional, and born from political maneuvering, not because they're legitimately moronic or completely unqualified.
