Randomly, I watched a video of someone doing the final boss of CV3 a couple months ago. Apparently, you can actually backtrack from right before Dracula to the previous room, and it makes all the candles reset. So if you take your time, you can grind up a huge supply of hearts before entering the fight. Which is highly relevant, because eg the Axe is great for the fight.

Wish I had known that 30 years ago. I did actually beat the game once back in the day, but only with Grant. Never got to see the other two endings.

I managed to bring down Dracula last night, thanks in large part to this. Thanks @Fry

There is a big heart right at the top and bottom of the stairs. Other than a shameful death when Grant missed the stairs you have plenty of time to stock up on hearts and get shot multipliers if you want them too. You can fill up your hearts but you don't need to. More than 45 hearts is probably overkill. I used Trevor on the first form, then Grant and axes for the next two. For as hard as it is getting to him, his second two forms go down really fast. It seemed like each one of his faces takes separate damage from the axe? I think he was overall harder in the first game.

I always use help me. I think maybe it was in Nintendo Power? I never got past the ghost ship as a kid though. Two bosses at the same time was too much for me.

My wife really wants me to complete with Alucard. "Why did you beat it with this barefoot hunchback?" Alucard didn't even make it onto the box art! Also the castle basement is obnoxious.
Poor Grant being left out of the animated series really hurt him.

The dripping floating face thing has IIRC five targets on it that you have to destroy, and it is a massive pain in the ass trying to whip it/staff bonk it/etc to death.

Likewise, the final form is absolutely awful if you have to ride moving platforms just to maybe whip it once or twice, with the constant threat of instant death from holes in the floor in addition to the usual threat of running out of HP.

Grats on beating it! Don't know why your wife wants you to go again with Abraham Lincoln minus the hat though (seriously, Alucard is absurdly tall in this one). Other than the navigation help you get from bat form, he's really bad in this because he has no offense to speak of even IF you go to the effort to get him "whip" upgrades.

Yes, without the axe it would be rough but since they are so kind as to start you in the block before him when you die, you can always have the axe. Castlevania one Drac would be much worse if he didn't have holy water in his room for some reason.

Symphony of the Night is the first and only Castlevania game she has beaten thus far and she did enjoy the animated series quite a bit.

He is pretty awful in this game though and as bad as the ghost ship/tower/bridge route is the castle basement is even worse. The bat form is nice, but it seems like Grant is much more maneuverable and useful in any situation you would use bat form in except for long flights over pits which only occur on Alucard's route anyways. Why in the world can't he attack on the stairs?

AVGN did a pretty good job summing up my feelings on Castlevania 3 (starting at the 7:05 mark)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrLdIiW6bEo

Especially the part where he says "if there's any game that puts you in a bad mood...it's Castlevania 3". Nailed it.

Luckily he is wrong and it doesn't start you at the beginning of the stage it starts you at the second block, which skips the awful bird-auto-scroller-breaking floor bone pillar rooms. Dumping you at the start of the stage is one of the reasons I never finished Ninja Gaiden.

I think they may have inadvertently made the US version easier in that aspect as the axe is great on Dracula, and you aren't locked out from getting it.

It's a top down survival crafting game with vampires. If you can imagine Vampire: The Dark Age crossed with Valheim, you'll get within the ballpark. Build bases, craft weapons, explore new zones for stronger resources, etc. The vampire thing puts its own spin on a lot of the elements though. You're not terribly concerned about food and water obviously. But your choice of who you feed on matters as different targets grant you different classes of buff and in differing potency. Sometimes you're just starving and need to deal with it though. And sometimes the 100% potency dude you were saving for last in hopes of mentally dominating him to keep in your base as cattle runs over a fire set by his archer buddy's explosive arrow or triggers the aggro of a bear, bandit pack, or treant.

While most survival games with a day/night cycle have night being the scary time, here it's reversed. Going into batform to fly during the daytime is a very bad idea. As a general rule, your only real survival concerns are blood reserve and sunlight so there's less to keep track and no inventory juggling around those but they're still very impactful.

Progression largely involves tracking and hunting stronger and stronger boss enemies to absorb powers and knowledge from them. Or for some of them, having them stumble on you as they patrol at an inconvenient time. As a vampire, your default speed and strength are portrayed as beyond a human's so a lot of things like resource collecting and combat move at a faster pace than most games in the genre.

The Early Access releases have been hits among people who enjoy the genre. It hasn't been perfect by any means (minion resource missions aren't really useable in the single player mode), but there's been a decent sized group here that hops on a server during new content updates.

Known about this one for a while, but a new trailer just dropped:

Blasphemous, but with a lady this time. Looks good, I'm down! The main mechanic is a magic sword that you can throw and teleport to. Hope it's more combat that puzzle platformer, I prefer the former.

Been playing The Last Faith and it is fantastic. It combines some Bloodborne with Blasphemous almost perfectly. I also really like the voice acting and creepy as fuck characters.

Bloodstained update: Chaos Mode, Vs. Mode, etc.
    Hello, Bloodstained Fans!

We are excited to present the final Development Roadmap for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night!

Here is what we have planned.

    Update 1.5
    PC / PS4 / Xbox – May 9, 2024
    Nintendo Switch – May 16, 2024

    Release Timing

We will be releasing across all regions simultaneously.

    PC / PlayStation 4 / Microsoft Xbox One – May 9
    8am PDT / 4pm BST / 5pm CEST / 11pm HKT / Midnight May 10 JST

    Nintendo Switch – May 16
    8am PDT / 4pm BST / 5pm CEST / 11pm HKT / Midnight May 17 JST

Chaos Mode / VS Mode / 1 Free Miriam Cosmetic Pack / 3 Premium (Paid) Miriam Cosmetic Packs

Update 1.5 will contain two new game modes, and one free Cosmetic Pack. Along with this, three Premium DLC Miriam Cosmetic Packs will be available for purchase.

This will be the final update to the game.

    Chaos Mode

Chaos Mode is local or online co-op action that you can play solo, with a friend or be matched with other players on the same system.

Fight through a series of randomized rooms to defeat demons and bosses.

Complete challenges before each boss to get powerful upgrades!

    How long will you survive?

    Versus Mode

VS Mode is a special PVP mode created just for Ritual of the Night.

At the beginning of the match, players will enter a room exclusive to the match battle. Wave after wave of demons will begin to attack both players. When you defeat the demons, you will gain souls. Souls can be spent at the central statue (shop) to upgrade your weapons, armor or items.

You will be able to purchase attacks that will negatively affect your opponent. Fill their room with fog, reverse their controls and more! The winner is the player that survives the longest.

Versus Mode supports local and online play with friends or matchmaking with other players on the same platform. Please note that Chaos and Versus Modes do not support cross-platform play.

More details on each game mode will be revealed when they go live.

    Cosmetic Packs

1.5 also includes three premium (paid) cosmetic packs and one free pack for Miriam that will change her appearance in the game.

Each cosmetic pack has multiple unique clothing items and weapons, each with upgradeable stats. Premium Cosmetic Packs will be available for purchase on each platform’s online store.

Equipping a complete set of cosmetic pack items will enable a special stat bar for that specific pack.

Included with 1.5 is a free cosmetic pack for Miriam that will automatically be added to everyone’s inventory when it is released.

Premium DLC Cosmetic Pack assets will only download after purchase.

Classic II: Dominique’s Curse – Premium DLC

    Date To Be Announced

Following the 1.5 update, we will release Classic Mode II, a premium DLC game mode!

It brings the same retro-gameplay as Classic Mode but with a bigger map and its own canon storyline!

Classic Mode 2 assets will only download after purchase.

More information on Classic II will be provided when it is closer to release.

    Kickstarter Rewards

Chaos and Vs Modes are the final stretch goals for the game. Once these two modes are completed we will begin to work on the final physical reward remaining to be delivered: the Physical PC version of the game.

PC Physical tier backers received a digital code to play the game when it was first released in June 2019, but they still need to receive their final physical reward.

If there are any Backers whose addresses has changed since the original backing registration, you will have to update your address through Fangamer’s survey portal. Please check your current address. If no update is sent, the assumption will be the address has not changed and the item will be shipped to the address on file. We will make announcements on Kickstarter before that deadline occurs.

    https://fulfillment.fangamer.com/kindling/bloodstained/survey_support

Except for the Physical PC version of the game, all other rewards have been shipped. If you believe you are missing a reward, you can contact Fangamer via the reward survey linked above.

We hope that you are as excited for these upcoming modes and DLCs as we are!

Stay tuned to any of our social or news channels for more information.

    Thank you very much!

Just found out that Ender Lilies got a sequel like a month ago:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FePjstNDJuA&ab_channel=BinaryHazeInteractiveCH

Hadn't heard anything about it, then I saw one of those 'all bosses' YT vids and was like 'wait, that's not got anything to do with Ender Lilies does it?'

But yes. It's the word 'Ender' with a different flower name after it, it's an actual sequel.

Haven't played it yet but I liked the first one well enough to play through it and get all the endings, so I'll probably grab this one too. It's in EA (what isn't these days) though, so part of me wants to hold off in case they add more bosses or something.

It’s pretty crazy to me that they’re continuing to support Bloodstained this long after release. Surely they’re working on a Bloodstained 2?

Some are speculating that they have a B team on these updates while the core team works on the sequel. Would explain why these updates are taking as long as they have.

The Kickstarter era was crazy for the promises they made in a week resulting in 5-10 years of work down the line. Shovel Knight basically ended up producing three games worth of content and publishing it as one game. A lot of these campaigns were promising Vita or Wii U versions...

Apparently it's as Dirty says, they've been working on both at the same time.

Man, the board game scene had a similar era where you'd basically get 3-4 campaigns in a single campaign game for a song, but the production timeline was severely constrained on those which made for less than ideal working conditions. That age is now over, and I think we'll all be the better for it.

1000/1000 achievements in Gal Guardians: Demon Purge. Overall a fun, but kind of slight crossover of the design sensibilities of The Messenger and Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. I posted about this previously when I was only mostly done with it, but the second lap you have to do through the game to get to all the endings exposes where it needed just a bit more TLC. There's 2 collectibles to get in every stage and special ones to get in certain stages. The level select map ONLY tells you directly about the "get to the ending" items, which you don't need that information because all of those are just "refight the stage end boss who has a SLIGHTLY more challenging pattern." The three collectibles that unlock ending 2 out of 3 are very hidden on purpose, but a hint would be nice. The lost students you need to find all of to get to ending 3 of 3 have a compass that will tell you if you're VERY close to one, but the radius could be much larger and especially the game should tell you whether you've found them all in one stage or not. The achievement only portal collectible is the most annoying, it could also REALLY use at the very least a list that tells you which stages you're missing some on. I'd say it's an 8 for genre fans dropped to a 7 because of the mentioned issues with the design. One last note, the entire game is licensed off the ecchi brand Gal Gun, but despite that, it's dramatically LESS pervy than genre mainstays like Momodora or Shantae for 90% of the runtime, which is just funny to me.
