I really didn't like Gears 1. I liked the cover system and shooting mechanics, and graphically it was amazing at the time. But I really hated the art style and cold sterile look of the world. Yes, it's obviously not going to be rays and sunshine after the world ends. Doesn't mean I have to like it.
Never played Gears 2 for this reason.
Now I come in here and the first thing I see is jungle terrain. If history has taught me anything, from Lost to Predator to Uncharted, there's a good chance that I will like pretty much anything in a jungle setting.
Now I am conflicted.

After playing both Gears 1 and Gears 2 all the way through, several times, I still don't get the fucking Lambent thing, and I still don't get how Marcus' father is involved. I just don't get it.
Someone care to give a super fast, spoilered, run down?
Gears of War 2 added a decent amount of colored environments, though it still had its share of gray. Gear3 will probably build on that further. Though I doubt they'll lose the gray entirely. Ruined cities and underground lairs aren't exactly known for being colorful.

Everyone is pretty much in the dark as you.
Per the Lambent, apparently immulsion has mutagenic properties, and the Locust who get overly exposed to it either go berserker crazy, or come under the influence of a third party. In either case, they don't like Locust and the Locust don't like them. We'll undoubtedly learn more about them in Gears3 and/or the new novel.
Fenix's father is something I'm pretty sure they intentionally left unexplained. Even the characters in the game, for once, are shocked by it. (Hey Marcus, your dad apparently has map data on the entire locust hollow in his home. "Meh." Hey Marcus, there's this secret COG facility that appears to be growing some sort of mutant freaks, and possibly even implies that the Locust are mutated humans. "Oh well." Hey Marcus, you're dad's in a Locust computer talking about how to end the war. "Okay, that's a little weird.")

Ah, okay. I'm glad I'm not the only one. That's exactly what I got out of the GoW2.
Also, Marcus Fenix is one of the best video game characters ever, I don't care how droll and cliche he is. He's so cliche, he actually helps redefine the very cliche he seeks to emulate.
Man, Gears 2 is one of the best sequels. Gears 2 is to Gears 1 what God of War 2 is to God of War 1.
It's a fucking trip that improves on the first game in every way. It's a great game.
Just had to lime this for truth. There are a lot of people that just don't like Gears in general, which is fine...but Gears 2 was exactly what a sequel should.
I would say Mass Effect 2 fits in this category as well, once you get past the initial shock of the "RPG-lite" part of it.
e: I am referencing single player here. The GoW2 multiplayer netcode is, in fact, terrible, and the one area it regressed from GoW1.

Singleplayer, I'll completely agree with you. Bigger, badder and more badass indeed.
Multiplayer, in concept, I'll say you're closer to correct than incorrect.
Multiplayer, in practice, no fucking way. The sheer amount of exploitable glitches, and intentional lag issues in that game make it a slice of pure hell. I seriously hope Epic learns from it and doesn't let that happen to Gears 3.

Yeah, I was thinking of the singleplayer. Multi, the only thing I played was Horde.
Oh yeah, the single player definitely knocked it up about fifteen notches. The campaign was so epic, especially in comparison to the first game. I'm excited to see how far they go for 3.

The GoW2 campaign was so good, it actually established Gears of War as a single player experience for me, with multiplayer as an tack on. In fact, I rarely play any GoW2 multi. I am sure the shit netcode doesn't help this mind set.
I've played back through GoW2 at least twice, because the campaign is that awesome.
Gears of War 1 was the most fun I had online with my 360; playing with the PA crew. People like BladeOfSanjuro, Phosphene and NeuralFizz. Most of them are gone now though. That + being unemployed = tons of hours online.
In comparison, I think I had one good morning of several hours in Wingman for GoW2 with NeuralFizz, and that's the only thing that sticks out in my mind. Other than splitscreening with one of my real life friends.

Blade and Fizz are definitely still around. Phosphene died of cancer or went to outer space, whichever works.
Anyway, Gears, yeah. Fun game, ok multiplayer, though they fucked up the second one what with all the exploits and matchmaking problems.
But please, make it not totally suck online this time.
Gears 2 was a bloody riot in co-op, so much fun, so much awesome. I spent hours and hours with the first game online, every weekend with a pile of friends. Never happens now (all too old with lives and families LOL) but the right online environment could suck me back in, at least.
Also Horde mode was some real good times with a decent crew.
if i see a vehicle section in this game i'll crack a molar
christ i still want to strangle the man who made the section where you drive a wobbly monster-truck tank across an icy lake that was being hit by mortars
I agree with the general consensus: While Gears 2 improved in almost every way compared to the original, and could be a blast with the right people, it absolutely sucked online. Lag, glitches, the shittiest community on the 360, the fact that people didn't use the cover system online...etc.
However, I will probably buy this because of all the good memories, and because whoever thought up Horde mode deserves more of my monies.
Also, on the topic of that Gears2 title update, it's apparently fairly close to being submitted to certification, so we could see it within a month or so.
I liked Gears 1 and 2 enough to complete them but I didn't think either were that good. I will probably finish Gears 3 and wonder what the fuss was all about a third time. The hilariously tacky plot, stupid characters and dialogue are a guilty pleasure at this point. Hopefully they won't overdo the turret and vehicle sections this time around or at least not combine that with frozen lakes.

I just wish they'd do the sequels on PC. I would go out and pick up their first game in an instant if I knew I'd be able to play the sequels as well.
I'm still miffed that the PC version of Gears1 got a bigass chuck of exclusive singleplayer content that fills in the plotgap between acts 4 and 5.
I'm going to carry this nerdrage to my grave. You hear me epic? TO MY GRAVE!!!
Well, us PC users didn't get Gears of War 2 at all! Which is strange, I can definitely see delaying it a few months to encourage would be pirates to buy the game already but no Gears 2 PC at all? That's just leaving money on the table right there.

Apparently the first game was really heavily pirated, but my guess is MS paid to keep it console bound, kind of like Alan Wake. If they do a Gears trilogy set on PC I'd be extremely happy.

I am, in fact, pissed that the console never got the PC content (that I am aware of). The whole thing was mind boggling. Does MS not like money? They could have released that content as DLC and made a pile of it. It couldn't be at all hard to port to 360, it's all just Unreal Engine 3 content.

According to Epic, there was changes to the engine made for the PC version that makes the new content incompatible. That just makes me wonder why they couldn't modify the levels to use the older engine. It also makes me wonder why those new levels weren't made with DLC in mind.
Also, the PC version had 3 new multiplayer maps and a new gamemode (King of the Hill.) Strangely enough, all that content actually made it to the 360 via Gears2. It had the new gamemode out of the box, and each map pack had one of the new PC maps.

Xbox gamers didn't get a 30-45 minute setpiece.
PC gamers didn't get the entire second game.
I think it's easy to see decide who came out ahead in this case.
Gears is primarily a 360 franchise though, so it should have at least have gotten the definitive version of the game. Especially since without those new levels, the entire fifth act doesn't make any sense.

Well, back then, Epic was still a PC developer. Gears was their first primarily console game, so they probably wanted to show the PC market some loving after snubbing them for a year.

get me working multiplayer and you have my $60
maybe, like, TWO chainsaws on my gun wouldn't hurt either

Still, glad to see the third game in motion now.
Because they're silly geese?
Including the fact that both are tremendously overrated but their sequels are much better executed.
I'm going to carry this nerdrage to my grave. You hear me epic? TO MY GRAVE!!!
Yep, never touched the competitive stuff because all of my friends just wanted to do Horde mode.
And that was A-OK with me.

Then it got pirated to all shit.
