World of Tanks is an action/simulation MMO involving battles in WWII era tanks. The gameplay is a blend, with simulation elements like armor thickness, ammo penetration values, and accurate tank speeds, mixed with a 3rd person perspective and quick multiplayer rounds. The battles involve 15 players per side and play out like TF2 with tanks. Each type of tank has its role and you need all of them to win. In between battles you can use the battle XP and cash you gain to upgrade your tank, or buy a new tank. Your crew also gains skills and you can select different abilities for them like repair or camouflage. There are 3 tech trees at the moment, German, USSR, and US, with a French tree soon to be added and a likely British one coming eventually. There are several classes of vehicle: Light, medium, and heavy tanks; tank destroyers, and self-propelled artillery.

Officially the game is in closed beta, but I applied a few days ago and got an invitation the next day. If you submit your email you will probably get in very soon.
http://game.worldoftanks.com/registration/cbt/
Stability and feature wise this game feels like release quality, so I'm guessing they still have it in beta to test and balance new tanks as they add them.

Tank destroyer video
This game is f****** addictive. The battles happen quickly and matchmaking is super easy. You just select your tank and hit the 'battle' button. You are auto assigned to a battle based on your tank's tier in the tech tree and its class. The matches always have a reasonable mix of tanks (imo sometimes a little heavy on artillery), and I haven't been in any obviously mis-matched rounds. The best part is that if you get blown up in a battle, you can exit the round and start up a new one if you have another tank in your garage. Your destroyed tank stays in the battle and when it's over you get all the cash and XP you earned without having to spectate the rest of the game (but you can if you want to). Progression is quick too, I played for about 4 hours last night and I'm already into the tier 3 tanks. What really makes this game addictive is the tank and crew customization. You are always upgrading equipment or balancing your crew's skillset.

There is an option to form 3 person platoons that join the battles as a unit. In an upcoming patch they are adding a "clan wars" feature where you can set the whole 15 player side for organized games. But so far the pugs are still really fun. If anyone gets into the game I play under the name 'bamjo.' Maybe we can get on the PA vent server and crush some pubbies sometime. If there are enough people interested maybe we can get a steam group up.

So this is just a bunch of tanks shooting at other tanks?

    That's.... actually pretty badass.

I've been focusing on artillery, the US artillery tree is godly. I tried tank destroyers but I hate not having a turret.

Next I want to try out the Soviet heavy tanks, although the German Tiger series seems pretty cool too.

I'll have to try my hand at arty, shame there's no US tank destroyers... I'd love to buzz around in an M3 halftrack, or a Wolverine.

Friggin Lee I'm stuck grinding on has all the disadvantages of a TD with none of the advantages.

::edit:: hey, you ever going to finish your Battles from the Bulge LP?

Yeah I'm not sure how to feel about the power of artillery in this game. The low tier games with starter tanks and no arty play markedly differently from mid tier games with arty. It is tied in with the spotting mechanic, so without arty there is really no reason to have light tanks in the game once you can get meds and heavies. But when you have a light tank screen and artillery working together it is a thing of beauty (unless you are on the receiving end, then it's frustrating as hell).

But right now my M57 SPG is funding my climb up the other tank trees, it's a real money maker.

And yes Fleeb, I will get back to that LP soon, after finals for sure. Between school and other games I got kind of distracted. Thanks for your interest.

When the next softwipe comes, I can't decide whether to relearn my VKDB and then the Panther, or get a T43/44. Hell, maybe I could go for something entirely different, but heavies don't really suit me, I find my Wespe somewhat boring (plus i'm pretty bad), and i'm far too impatient to make good use of TDs.

Been playing this for a few months, fun but has some major issues. Biggest one is after about tier 6-7 there is really no reason to drive anthing other than a Russian heavy tank or artillery.

Part of this is the last patch fixed tanks warping from one spot to anther when viewed from long range. Now people can actually lead their shots so lights/meds can get tracked and killed while moving at full speed before they can get close/flank heavies, or get tracked and one shotted by arty. All without the medium/light ever seeing any of the tanks shooting at them since visibility is messed up right now.

I said Russian because the devs have a pattern of making the already good russian tanks even better every patch, while giving minimal improvents or nerfs to the germans and US. Latest example is the IS-4, i have one and its arguably the best tank in the game, is getting its near impenatrable front armor made even thicker next patch (a small part of its rear armor is getting slightly thinner, still thicker than a tier 6 meds front) for historical reasons. While german tanks are slower and guns less effective than their historical stats for gameplay reasons. The US heavies which have good turret armor and paper thin hull armor are getting their armor reduced across the board and getting their movent, accuracy while moving/traversing reduced as well.

That said, I still like the game. Just after the soft wipe I will keep my IS4, maby get an IS7, buy an IS, and drop all the points i spent on the other trees above tier 5. The low tier battles are fine, except for artillery being too good at that level, just I see no reason to keep my tiger or get another t44 with the russan heavy line the way it is now. The higher tier german TDs can be OK though. Probably just save a buch of free exp and see if they rebalance things latter.

So I have a question about crew. Is it worth retraining my 57% guys when I switch to a new tank? They just get reset to 50%, it seems like a waste. I can't really afford the 20k it takes to make them better, I need that for new tanks and upgrades.

I did try it once, and see no reason to ever do it again. Total waste.

As an aside tho, if you can afford it it's totally worth it to train crew to 75 or 100 %. Makes a huuuge difference.

From what I understand, the Panther and T-44 play way differently. If you're doing well in the Panther I'd say stick with it. My understanding is that the Panther is a mobile sniper and the T-44 is more of a brawler

Yeah, thats why i'm interested in trying out the T44, see how that works for me.

Oh and alas, I don't currently have a Panther, so that was part of the problem in choosing. With the softwipe however I will be able to afford one, as I can consolidate my XP.

As for training crews, going up to 100% is great, but don't sweat if you don't have the gold. Most tanks become noticably better at 80% proficiency, and from then on you won't notice a massive difference. So just train to 75% and play a few battles is good enough for the most part.

Stug is great. Fast, low profile, 2 good guns. The hetzer gets the 105 too, just its way too slow to really use it.

The problem with the hetzer isnt that its just horrible, just it gets put in games with tier 9s all the time. So it just dies instantly when seen and can barely scratch most of its targets. Stug atleast gets the long 75 to snipe with when matched aginst those tanks, and the speed to get close to use the 105.

I've got to disagree with Ogotai, the Hetzer is that bad. You've just got to Hetz your way on through to the Stug. The Jagdpanther is good fun, so it's worth the grind.

In my experience, they both have their ups and downs. The USSR SU-76 and 85B are pretty dang awful, but things get better after that. The AT-1 is fantastic for its tier, though.

The next soft wipe is supposed to be coinciding with the server split in early/mid December, but there are the battle leagues going on and I don't see how they could split the servers before those are done. I'd say it rolls in at Christmas time or early January.

I've been playing this for a while, and the absurd placement in battles is just so ridiculous. I get placed regularly against tier 7+ stuff while I'm using tanks belonging to tier 5 or lower. Like, I'm pretty much the only one there, especially few of the battles I had with PzIII, where most players were using stuff like Ausf. B and Maus and IS-4 and better. It just gets silly.

This is fun in small doses though.

Yeah, I just got a PzIII and I am feeling your pain. I regularly get matched up with King Tigers and IS-3's. I only went up against a Maus once, but the fact that it is even a possibility is ridiculous. My usual strategy is to hide somewhere and plink away at their treads with HE until I get one shotted by a Stug or something. Even an upgunned PzIII has no place in the same battle with high tier heavies.

The stubby little 5 cm gun on my PzIII looks comical compared to the massive long 88's and 105's on the higher tier tanks. My tank is the one that gets ridiculed by the bigger, older tanks in the locker room. The best I can do is get some truck nuts to compensate

This post on the official forums goes into how the matchmaking system works, and it actually makes sense. Unfortunately the developers sorta forgot that while its possible for a tier 5 to damage a tier 7, the tier 7 does considerably more damage to anything below it, thanks to the fact it can often mount tier 8 guns.

Then of course you get the matches where your tiny little tier 4 goes up against a nice and big Tiger or IS. Hell, i've even seen Hetzers playing in games with a Maus. Luckily for the Hetzer though they were on the same team, but still. Thats just not right.

Russian TDs tend to be better up to the SU-100, where they become a par for the German ones. From then on its a case of do you want a massive gun that fires every so often, but wreaks anything (Russian side), or a smaller one that doesn't do as much damage, but fires faster and comes in a better survivable hull. Only thing to note about the German TDs is their top gun (is it the 105mm?) is disproportionately expensive on the higher tier models.

The thing with Hetzers and Stugs and such is, that while technically they can damage and destroy IS-3s and King Tigers, in practice it just doesn't happen that much. When it takes a dozen shots to destroy the enemy that can one shot you, it's not really a fair match, no matter what the devs say. Most of the time the best you can hope for is damaging their treads, but with IS-4 even that is pointless, since they seem to fix them in seconds.

TDs are weaksauce considering their supposed function of, I don't know, destroying tanks. It's a little masochistic that I like playing them. TDs since the Marder are just matched against opponents that vastly outgun, and outlast them.

The 105mm gun would be reasonable, if the reload time wasn't so absurdly long. At least then you'd be a reasonable threat to anything that wasn't down to single digits in health, or on the other side of the map so you can snipe and plink their health away.

At least the Stug moves well, even if it can't take hits.

Therein lies the problem with TDs; most tanks get an equivalent gun to them, or hell, even the same damned one! But with y'know, a turret. Thus rendering all TDs moot. Unless you have something big like a Ferdinand, which can take a few hits.

It's only really a problem with certain tiers. Tier 1-3 games are a blast. And when you face tanks of a similar tier the medium tanks acquit themselves well. All the game really needs is a few matchmaking tweaks and this is a non issue.

I just had a crazy round in my PzIII. I finally got around to upgrading my engine, so I decide to test it out and make a speed run to the enemy flag. It just happened to be one of those rounds where everyone on the other team went the same way, and the right side of the map was completely open. So I made it all the way to their backfield without being seen.

So I'm zipping around trying to get scouting XP, and I stumble into a cluster of 3 SPG's. I didn't really want to stop and fire long enough to take them all out, so I decided to give ramming a go. I ended up running over one of those little tier 2 Soviet SPG's (SU-18?), and killing an M37 and a Wespe. That drew the attention of a Stug who promptly turned around and one shotted me.

It was my best round in a PzIII so far. I got a nice chunk of XP toward the next tier. I'm not sure if I want to head up the Panther tree or go for the Tiger.

Lol that's pretty cool. PzIII's are great tanks. When I was going through it I couldn't stand it because you would be paired up with tier's 1-10. The matchmaking when I was in that tank was very primitive to say the least.

I'm always one to say the Tiger II is the best tank in the game so I would go there. Word to the wise, the PzIV and VK3601(H) are phenomenal tanks, but the stock Tiger is just bad. A huge letdown after you've fully upgraded your VK. If you go for a Tiger don't sell your VK

If you really like the PzIII, i'd be inclined to go toward the Panther. The VK(DB) is arguably as good (well, for a bigger, heavier tank anyway) as your little PzIII in terms of speed and agility, but as fantastic frontal armour due to the slope, and can pack a nice short 88mm or the faster, but less heavy hitting 76mm(?) which is ideal for dogfighting.

That said, i'm going to try something new come the softwipe, so what do I know?
