Inner Sphere News, the twitter feed for all your official MechWarrior needsMechWarrior 5: What's the Scoop?MechWarrior 5 is a reboot of the classic MechWarrior franchise. It's NOT a MechAssault game, it's a MechWarrior game, which means simulation, customization, blowing off limbs, heatsinks, and a robot female voice playing while you sit inside your mech cockpit furiously pressing buttons to stop your ammunition from exploding while your lancemates fire volleys of 20 missiles into an unending stream of giant enemy robots that are trying to kill you with lasers.
MechWarrior 5 was cancelled and scrapped. It was going to be a reboot of sorts. A single player with multiplayer options, as previous game.
So what's this thread about, then? This thread is actually about MechWarrior Online. It's a free to play MMO that will follow (in real time) the Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere, which is a thing. We don't know much yet but
here is the website.
I Played MechAssault on my XBOX and It Was Boring. Why do I Care About This?
Yo
fuck MechAssault. MechWarrior is a venerable franchise that, as far as videogames go, dates back to MechWarrior, which was fun but was made before graphics were invented, MechWarrior 2, which was sweet but mostly just a prelude to
MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries, which is one of the best games ever made. MechWarrior 3 was by all accounts sort of fun and MechWarrior 4 was mostly just a prelude to MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries, which was also pretty sweet and which is
FREE TO DOWNLOAD FOR EVERYONE! The MechWarrior games are simulations and damn good ones, too. There aren't too many complicated buttons but there are enough, and the HUD ends up looking a bit like an F-14's HUD looks like if the F-14 was designed to blow off the legs of an enemy F-14. With lasers.

Screw F2P, I'm gonna P2W! How much does MC cost?
Mechwarrior Credits (MC) is the official real-money-based currency (read: funbucks) that you get by paying cash money, in addition to Cbills, the fully in-universe based currency (read: spacebucks) that you earn by playing the game. Here's how many funbucks you can get for your real bucks
- 25,000 MC: $99.95USD
- 12,000 MC: $49.95USD
- 6,500 MC: $29.95USD
- 3,000 MC: $14.95USD
- 1,250 MC: $6.95USD
I Just CAN'T GET ENOUGH MECH STUFF!
Oookay, well, you've got a few options.
MechCommanderMechCommander and
MechCommander 2 are
free. They're pretty fun; you basically load out your 'mechs and command them in battle. They're pretty good recreations of the MechWarrior games, actually. Certainly worth a look if you enjoy strategy and mechs.
MechWarrior 4
MechWarrior 4 is free too.
MekTek, which released tons of awesome mech "paks" and stuff for the game, has been given the rights to release it because god loves MechWarrior and is smiling on us fans or something. The free version comes with MekPak 3.1 which adds even more stuff and adds the new 'mechs into single player. This is probably the best MechWarrior single player experience right now.
MechWarrior: Living LegendsLiving Legends is a kickass Crysis Wars MechWarrior mod. It's almost professional quality. The graphics are stupendous and they've done more than just add 'mechs: you get a bunch of the air vehicles and ground vehicles, too, plus Elementals if you're silly enough NOT to want to pilot a giant walking tank. The mod is multiplayer only and it even has Solaris arena matches in there. Definitely check this out if you have Crysis Wars, because it's free (as long as you own Crysis Wars, duh).
Here is the Penny Arcade forum thread for this game.
MechWarrior 2
MechWarrior 2 is not free but if you own a copy already (like, say, MW2: Mercenaries woooo) you can get it running on Windows XP (and Vista and 7?) with
MechVM. Install MechVM, put your CD in, and tell MechVM to install from the CD. Bada-bing, it runs fine. I'm playing Mercenaries right now and I'm stuck on an early level where I have to escort some people to a prison that the AI keeps blowing up in order to make me lose. An alternative is to use
MW2hook which works pretty well but is a bit of work to figure out.
MechWarrior 3MechWarrior3.org should have everything you need to get up and running with the worst game in the series since MechWarrior 1. That said, it's still a pretty good game. I don't think there's ever been a
bad MechWarrior game really.
Hey I want one of those swanky Oosik Irregulars sigs! How do I get one?

That's what I got out of it, anyways. Rather poignant.
Also, don't freak out about the mandatory heatsinks in mechs with smaller engines. While those are counted separately from the engine but are still included in the weight.
Yeah, I'm totally okay with giving them the benefit of the doubt, it just seems strange it took no time at all to point out there was an issue, nevermind figuring out what it is.
But hey, that's what beta is for!
Thanks again Doc!
Since we're going open beta on Monday, I'll have to fire up the game and toy around with some of the starter mechs, see if it's really for me. If it does catch me I could see myself going with the $30 package to get the YLW for the c-bill bonus and hold onto the rest for mech slots or whatever caught my eye.
source for the added cockpit weight hypothesis?
the needing seperate heatsinks from the engine are most definetly NOT included in the weight of the engine. it tells me i have to have at least 1, i add it in, it costs me a ton.
So, engine weight's are now standard engine weight, plus gyro weight for that engine, plus 3 for the cockpit, then minus the weight of any mandatory external heatsinks (so minus a ton for 225-245, minus two tons for 200-220, etc)?
Can someone do some numbers and confirm this?
... then why does the XL245 weigh 3 more tons than it used to AND i have to put at least 1 HS on my mech somewhere? making it 4 tons in practice.
Post above you is what I've been seeing. Weight of cockpit and gyro have been added to engines and the weight of required heat sinks on smaller engines removed. They'll still be heaver now unless you need to somehow put five in or something.
EDIT: that does seem off though, because my 285 only went up 3 tons (11.5tons to 14.5tons)
ok. i think im starting to understand. im looking at an XL weight, but the base weight goes off the standard. so a standard 245 should weigh 22 tons (since xls are half) which includes the cockpit and gyro weight in it minus however may tons the heat sinks (out of the free 10) cant be included in the engine.
The sig generator thing is out to sea at the moment....
@TOGSolid
So the 245XL all things included should weigh 12 tons, or 11 tons plus a heatsink.
Also a 285xl weighs 8.5t base, then you add 6 onto that for 14.5
Edit: in any case, they seem to be following the TT weights now.
Edit: and a naked standard atlas is 10t
"Reaper"
Atlas D-DC
Gauss Rifle
3xSRM-6
2xMLas
Lots of ammo.
Biggest XL engine you can fit.
Works for me. Glad that's sorted. Would have been nice for them to mention that in the patch notes. Ah well.
Mmmm so much delicious damage. It also seems pretty heat efficient. Also I can't seem to find it in the other thread, is there a way to bind the mouse wheel to zoom?
This is mad:
I should not be going that fast in an Awesome.
I *think* so, but I belive it requires going into one of the files.
sort of.
Bind it to any other non-standard key (like "?"). Exit the client.
Go to your profile folder in the mechwarrior files and find "actionmaps.xml" Edit it and find this part:
Change "?" to "mwheel_up" or "mwheel_down" This will allow you to use scroll to toggle zoom. You can't actually use your wheel to zoom in and out (it will still cycle how it does normally), but it's a bit handier.
Not right now, that was a patch casualty.
You have less firepower than some Jenner builds, soooo...yeah. :P
Open Beta is going to be a clusterfuck. This should be amusing.
Technically, yes. I also have 3 times the armor they do. And three times the heat dissipation
EDIT: Well, probably not 3 times the armor.
derp! sleep depredation for the win. got it.
8-)
Obviously PGI needs to hire me.
seriously. We managed to not only notice a problem, but figure out it was somehow only tied to HS in the engine.
Then you repeat the experiment with a smaller 'mech, with a very small engine in it, so that all the heatsinks are outside the engine, if you're really being thorough (not that I'd expect that). And ideally also something in between, like a Cat or Dragon running something between a 250 and a 300.
If they don't have one on the back end, they really should.
Yeah I've been getting ganked with alarming frequency.
