MechWarrior 5: What's the Scoop?
MechWarrior 5 is a reboot of the classic MechWarrior franchise. It's NOT a MechAssault game, it's a MechWarrior game, which means simulation, customization, blowing off limbs, heatsinks, and a robot female voice playing while you sit inside your mech cockpit furiously pressing buttons to stop your ammunition from exploding while your lancemates fire volleys of 20 missiles into an unending stream of giant enemy robots that are trying to kill you with lasers.

MechWarrior 5 was cancelled and scrapped. It was going to be a reboot of sorts. A single player with multiplayer options, as previous game.

So what's this thread about, then?
This thread is actually about MechWarrior Online. It's a free to play MMO that will follow (in real time) the Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere, which is a thing. We don't know much yet but here is the website.

I Played MechAssault on my XBOX and It Was Boring. Why do I Care About This?
Yo fuck MechAssault. MechWarrior is a venerable franchise that, as far as videogames go, dates back to MechWarrior, which was fun but was made before graphics were invented, MechWarrior 2, which was sweet but mostly just a prelude to MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries, which is one of the best games ever made. MechWarrior 3 was by all accounts sort of fun and MechWarrior 4 was mostly just a prelude to MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries, which was also pretty sweet and which is FREE TO DOWNLOAD FOR EVERYONE! The MechWarrior games are simulations and damn good ones, too. There aren't too many complicated buttons but there are enough, and the HUD ends up looking a bit like an F-14's HUD looks like if the F-14 was designed to blow off the legs of an enemy F-14. With lasers.

Additional Info
Screw F2P, I'm gonna P2W! How much does MC cost?
Mechwarrior Credits (MC) is the official real-money-based currency (read: funbucks) that you get by paying cash money, in addition to Cbills, the fully in-universe based currency (read: spacebucks) that you earn by playing the game. Here's how many funbucks you can get for your real bucks
  • 25,000 MC: $99.95USD
  • 12,000 MC: $49.95USD
  • 6,500 MC: $29.95USD
  • 3,000 MC: $14.95USD
  • 1,250 MC: $6.95USD

I Just CAN'T GET ENOUGH MECH STUFF!
Oookay, well, you've got a few options.

MechCommander
MechCommander and MechCommander 2 are free. They're pretty fun; you basically load out your 'mechs and command them in battle. They're pretty good recreations of the MechWarrior games, actually. Certainly worth a look if you enjoy strategy and mechs.

MechWarrior 4
MechWarrior 4 is free too. MekTek, which released tons of awesome mech "paks" and stuff for the game, has been given the rights to release it because god loves MechWarrior and is smiling on us fans or something. The free version comes with MekPak 3.1 which adds even more stuff and adds the new 'mechs into single player. This is probably the best MechWarrior single player experience right now.

MechWarrior: Living Legends
Living Legends is a kickass Crysis Wars MechWarrior mod. It's almost professional quality. The graphics are stupendous and they've done more than just add 'mechs: you get a bunch of the air vehicles and ground vehicles, too, plus Elementals if you're silly enough NOT to want to pilot a giant walking tank. The mod is multiplayer only and it even has Solaris arena matches in there. Definitely check this out if you have Crysis Wars, because it's free (as long as you own Crysis Wars, duh). Here is the Penny Arcade forum thread for this game.

MechWarrior 2
MechWarrior 2 is not free but if you own a copy already (like, say, MW2: Mercenaries woooo) you can get it running on Windows XP (and Vista and 7?) with MechVM. Install MechVM, put your CD in, and tell MechVM to install from the CD. Bada-bing, it runs fine. I'm playing Mercenaries right now and I'm stuck on an early level where I have to escort some people to a prison that the AI keeps blowing up in order to make me lose. An alternative is to use MW2hook which works pretty well but is a bit of work to figure out.

MechWarrior 3
MechWarrior3.org should have everything you need to get up and running with the worst game in the series since MechWarrior 1. That said, it's still a pretty good game. I don't think there's ever been a bad MechWarrior game really.

So the letter regarding open beta from Russ wasn't put together very well, but there is a very salient point at the end; be a positive force for the game. Coach new players, utilize Twitter and Facebook to notify people of the game's existence. By all means, give your opinions, but keep emotions out of it. This does not mean, in any way, that we should be yes-men for PGI or blind raging geese. In other words, be clear, concise, and show your love for the franchise in the best way you know how.

That's what I got out of it, anyways. Rather poignant.

FYI engines aren't actually heavier, they're just including the cockpit (3t) and gyro (engine/100 rounded up) in the weight.

Also, don't freak out about the mandatory heatsinks in mechs with smaller engines. While those are counted separately from the engine but are still included in the weight.

But hey, maybe they just didn't realize it wasn't working right.

Keep in mind that we have more playtesters that hop on Vent in a day than they have actual employees. If you did something like, say, build the one Centurion I have, which has 7 DHSes added on outside the engine, then yeah, it would be pretty easy to think the DHS system is working as intended.

The devs may make this stuff, but we play it a helluva lot more than they do and so are going to have a much better, faster feel for when things aren't right.

Not saying they aren't actually trying to spin actual developmental intent as an "accident", but when you've got to build and playtest a game getting as complicated as this one, I don't think it's too horribly unreasonable to miss something like that.

Yeah, I'm totally okay with giving them the benefit of the doubt, it just seems strange it took no time at all to point out there was an issue, nevermind figuring out what it is.

But hey, that's what beta is for!

Wait wait, did they increase the lowest buy in option price?

That was me, thanks for the heads up.

The other half of my question was if anyone had a link to the prices in the shop? Like, people have generalized about the rough $'s for a mech here and there, but I'd love to see a breakdown of what mechs for what points, how much the extra bay slots cost, etc, etc. Google was no help, and while I assume prices remain in flux to some degree or another, it'd be nice to see how things are shaping up for now at least.

Not perfect but I'm way too lazy to make it all pretty.
    mechse.png

Mechbay slots are 300 MC by the way.

    Thanks again Doc!

Since we're going open beta on Monday, I'll have to fire up the game and toy around with some of the starter mechs, see if it's really for me. If it does catch me I could see myself going with the $30 package to get the YLW for the c-bill bonus and hold onto the rest for mech slots or whatever caught my eye.

source for the added cockpit weight hypothesis?

the needing seperate heatsinks from the engine are most definetly NOT included in the weight of the engine. it tells me i have to have at least 1, i add it in, it costs me a ton.

I think he means the engine itself weighs a ton less now on account of having to put in a heat sink.

So, engine weight's are now standard engine weight, plus gyro weight for that engine, plus 3 for the cockpit, then minus the weight of any mandatory external heatsinks (so minus a ton for 225-245, minus two tons for 200-220, etc)?

Can someone do some numbers and confirm this?

Post above you is what I've been seeing. Weight of cockpit and gyro have been added to engines and the weight of required heat sinks on smaller engines removed. They'll still be heaver now unless you need to somehow put five in or something.

EDIT: that does seem off though, because my 285 only went up 3 tons (11.5tons to 14.5tons)

ok. i think im starting to understand. im looking at an XL weight, but the base weight goes off the standard. so a standard 245 should weigh 22 tons (since xls are half) which includes the cockpit and gyro weight in it minus however may tons the heat sinks (out of the free 10) cant be included in the engine.

Its half the actual engine weight. A standard 245 engine by itself weighs 12 tons, while an XL weighs 6 tons... its all in a big chart in the rulebooks. The cockpit's always going to be a straight +3 tons, and the gyro depends on your engine rating, in this case its going to be 3 tons.

So the 245XL all things included should weigh 12 tons, or 11 tons plus a heatsink.

Also a 285xl weighs 8.5t base, then you add 6 onto that for 14.5

Edit: in any case, they seem to be following the TT weights now.

Okay so somebody willing to strip their 'mech down to just skeleton and confirm that the internal structure no longer factors in cockpit weight? It makes sense, since gyro costs were programmed into engine costs, it was probably easier to just roll cockpit weight in as well, and have IS just be straight up 10/5% based on type.

    sort of.

Bind it to any other non-standard key (like "?"). Exit the client.

Go to your profile folder in the mechwarrior files and find "actionmaps.xml" Edit it and find this part:
    -<action name="m_toggle_zoom_mode"> <rebind defaultInput="z" index="1" input="?" device="keyboard"/> </action>

Change "?" to "mwheel_up" or "mwheel_down" This will allow you to use scroll to toggle zoom. You can't actually use your wheel to zoom in and out (it will still cycle how it does normally), but it's a bit handier.

We have found an issue with the current DHS implementation where the engine DHSs are acting like single, standard heat sinks. Unfortunately this was missed in testing on all levels of development including myself. We apologize for the oversight and have found the problem.
I figured this out in two matches by myself via the highly scientific method of "attempting to use an ER PPC and then facepalming after firing it a couple times."

Obviously PGI needs to hire me.

seriously. We managed to not only notice a problem, but figure out it was somehow only tied to HS in the engine.

Like, the very first way you test DHS is you take any stock 'mech, like the 3xPPC Awesome, and you go run it. Then you roll over to DHS, and you go run it, and you look at how the heat scale changes.

Actually an ideal testbed would be a 'mech with a 400 rated engine in it, full of HS (since you can store 16 in that engine), and run something like 2 ERPPCs, and just watch how your heat goes. How high does it go on a full Alpha, standing still, on ground, in Forest, and how long does it take to drop back to 0? Then switch to DHS, and repeat.

Then you repeat the experiment with a smaller 'mech, with a very small engine in it, so that all the heatsinks are outside the engine, if you're really being thorough (not that I'd expect that). And ideally also something in between, like a Cat or Dragon running something between a 250 and a 300.

irmt was odd. i was standing in the upper base on river city, next to the plane area up front with the barracades covering my right side looking out over the center of the map. i took a ouple pot shots with my ERPPCs at the awesome then saw him go behind buildings. kept looking for him. never saw him come out. but suddenly my torso was read and almost gone. no noise, hit animation, cockpit rocking... just full to almost dead instantly with no warning.
