but what is up with these dragons? am I supposed to cheese them? because they are impossible otherwise. they do the weaken attack which makes my immunities not work, then one shot my party for 6000 damage

they actually do physical damage, which means Ninja can eat them alive
I'm sure there are actual cheese strategies for doing it
But starting in Chapter 5 you come up against a lot of bosses that are almost like puzzles and require you to leverage the game's mechanics in specific ways
I beat the fire dragon by having my healer use the BP recovery support ability (grants 2 bp whenever it inflicted fire vulnerability) and the spiritmaster's Enigma ability, which makes your entire party immune to elemental damage for the price of 3 bp. It relies on a lot of jp grinding for spiritmaster, and the dragon not spamming his eye attack, but it made the fight pretty easy. Haven't tried it on the other dragons yet.

In chapter 4 now, and Edea's a beast.
Random encounters now go as follows:
1) Encounter
2) Crescent moon
3) Crescent moon
4) Victory screen.
it seems the original party is dead, ominous crowe having edea's sword alludes to that. which is disappointing as I was hoping to see three alternis dims running around

Oh man I didn't pick up on this at all but I think you're right
That is blowin' my mind but it really puts all of that guy's screaming in context
I have discovered a dominant strategy, though it takes some grinding
First, one character needs to have mastered Black Mage for group cast all (and should probably have some way to boost status ailments, like the Freelancer's prayer, or that one support ability arcanists get, or I think high int would also help). Second, all characters need to have 9 levels in Red Mage for BP recovery, which grants 2 BP when receiving a status ailment. The character with group cast all (a.k.a BP spring) should have red magic as one of their battle abilities.
In battle:
Step 1: Have BP spring brave 4 times
Step 2: Cast poison on your party 3 times (make sure no one is immune), then end with poisona
Step 3: Do this every turn
Step 4: Profit!
Notes:
-You can substitute one of the poison castings for something else, but you should poison yourself at least twice to fully refund the spent BP
-For maximum effectiveness, BP spring should be the slowest member of the party, and everyone else should use all their brave points (up to 6 or 7) before getting replenished by BP spring
-This gives the party up to 6 BP per turn, so it's most useful if you use abilities that cost BP
-This isn't really necessary for most random battles, but super handy for bosses
mimic still costs the user a turn though, right? I think I tried that and ended up with a net loss of 2 BP for the performer/freelancer (could be misremembering, though). Also, this has higher potential BP generation.
edit: also also, my way only requires a character to master one class

But the best involves either jumping or Ninja-style dodging

Remembered loving those guys in the demo. Looking forward to wrecking some faces once I get a good katana.
Why I fear the ocean.
Against magic enemies, no, not really
But one other option you have there is group-casting Dispel, or spending your Braves on it
Dispel will get rid of imposed elemental weaknesses
inversely the arcanist ability lets you single target any aoe spells. it's pretty baller for summoner

So. Dumb
200K.
I did some serious grinding to get one of those.
Then I found out it looked awful.
So, that was fun!
Why I fear the ocean.
Which one was it? I mean, who are we kidding, I'll buy them all eventually, but I want to know which ones to avoid in the short term.
...Right?
oh dear

If you have a square enix account and beat the game on hard you get one of Agnes too.
