I think I'd probably be interested in a TR game based around climbing mechanics from Assassin's Creed/Prince of Persia and far less devotion to murdering mooks.

It's not improving the core game. It has zero effect on the gameplay.
It is improving your user experience with the game.

It is a dumb poll though, it should have been something like; "Female character model or new vehicle/enemy."

Speaking of though, its been awhile since I loaded it up, is there even a way to see the character/your face? Couldn't they literally just add a dialog at the start that lets you choose female/male, and does nothing?

Core game != core gameplay. The core game can be defined as anything that makes up the basic experience the game provides. For some people playing as a character of their preferred gender is a big part of that, even if you never see the character.

    Professionally disagree.

Core game is the pillar of what the rest of the game is built on. Just because an aspect is important to a player does not make it core.

I fully understand your point, and am not disagreeing with it, but that is not the right term.

So, episode 4 of King's Quest....kinda sucks. Like, I really disliked it, and I rarely strongly dislike anything. I really only finished it in hopes episode 5 is better.

The majority of the chapter are basically a bunch of puzzle rooms. Lots of sliding block puzzles and whatnot, so not even like adventure game puzzles, but just general boring puzzles. And the game's not made for them. Most puzzle games give you an easy reset (or better yet, don't let you lock yourself into a fail state at all). In here you can fuck a puzzle that has tons of animations and takes forever, but not realize it until toward the end, and you can't even just start again, you have to basically ride things out or purposefully fail early. Or another puzzle that takes place over three stories but makes you use the game's slow climbing mechanics do go between levels.

Just, ugh, I have no clue how they thought focusing primarily on puzzle rooms was a good idea. The meager story bits are actually pretty good, but are few and far between. Wonder if it's just a budgetary measure because the game hasn't exactly been setting the charts on fire.

That's a bummer to hear. I loved the first episode and then found the second one fairly irritating and was kind of put off by it. I hadn't taken the time to check out the third yet, but was hoping it'd get back to better material.

Well, you can send her out to kill monsters, but if she's ever defeated your demonic butler saves her.

As for pretty princess dress-up... well, there is some. But a lot of dresses require your daughter to be thin, which might mean dieting, which means your daughter won't be as good at killing monsters.

    It's a trade-off.

EDIT: Of course, this is all just from memory of the mostly-finished beta from 15 years ago and not this slightly newer Refine version, so I could be wrong on some stuff.

Alright, sure fair enough. The problem is it wasn't asked internally amongst people who will interpret it that way, it was asked externally which includes some dummies like me who might interpret it as "should we work on this one new thing or literally everything else in the game that already exists" which is extremely unfairly weighted.

Anyway it's all moot since he's walked it back since then. It's just weird to me that it's even an argument in the first place. If your character never says anything and you barely ever see them why not allow for multiple genders? You're allowing much greater inclusion for the cost of making one character model.

Yeah, it was definitely a badly worded survey. There is absolutely no reason that I can see, that they can't just add a dialog at the start. Male?/Female?

It's a literal minuscule amount of coding and UI work, and would get them a lot of goodwill probably.
Maybe they are worried people will then complain that it doesn't actually change anything? I dunno. Stubborn and don't want to put work into something that literally does nothing but affect player perceptions?

Honestly Subnautica is not a game I would consider worth even discussing this kind of thing on (outside of the developer response). There is absolutely zero mention to or view of, or audio for your character. You can just as easily just assume the character is <insert X> and have the same effect as the dialog option.

Mechanically speaking, it's not specifically the character model that is the problem. Making those is relatively easy. It's the separate skeleton and animation set you now have to maintain. Aside from the inital cost of creation for every existing action and interaction being converted to the new skeleton, you are also doubling the animations required for anything new added in.
Saying "Do you want a female model, or do you want X new content" is not a lie, and depending on the amount of existing content that needs re-keyed and modified, it could potentially be a decent chunk of additional content.

Alright, @Pixelated Pixie and others who might be interested...

There is stuff to like about Warlock of Firetop Mountain. For one thing, it looks good:

    TMitqvs.png

I mean, some of the models are a bit blocky and the textures a bit blurry, but the overall effect is exactly that of moving miniatures around a gameboard. And as you explore, new rooms and corridors and caverns and such come slamming down ahead of you as if being placed by a gamemaster. It has a very satisfying look, better in motion than in still shots.

The first time through, the feel of the game is very much that of a DMed adventure. Also, the characters have different attributes, like dexterous or lucky or illiterate, that have effects on the game. So encountering a stalactite-dropping cave with a dexterous character might get you a bit of text and a safe run across the room. An encounter with the same room with a different character might require a skill check to get through without a stalactite to the dome. Two of the characters I played had "Keen Eye," and that often led to uncovering things another character might have overlooked.

Of course, that's not always good.

    (Minor spoiler image)
    HxvYa7C.png

So even though my keen eye character told me going that way "looks like the sort of place that would conceal something valuable," it was in fact an instadeath corridor with a text outcome of your horrifying doom. Alright, fuck you too, game. :(

So instadeath is a thing. That's fair play I guess for this type of game. But sometimes the instadeath path was a bit moon logic-y. Even with your best cautious adventurer hat on, it was easy to pick a path that just happened to spell your instant doom.

You do get three resurrection stones that take your character back to the last bench they rested at. The benches are really far apart, though. So you end up repeating big chunks of the game.

And aside from things that require rolls, nothing is random. So if there are two 'buttons' on the wall, and the right one burns you and the left one lowers the drawbridge, it's the same for each runthrough and every character. So some stretches of dungeon get to feel pretty Groundhog Day. That box under a table has gold in it. That box under a table has a nasty surprise. Every time. Different characters get a different subquest on the way to the warlock (retrieve this gem, get this amulet, etc.), but it's still super-samey.

Character progression is not satisfying. There's no leveling up, no allocation of skill points and no new abilities unlocked. At least as far as I got in the game, your character was your character for the whole game. You might have an encounter that gives you +1 or -1 of the two stats (Skill and Luck), but that's about it.

And the loot isn't loot in the classic dungeon crawler sense. There are few items, like a potion of invisibility, that you can find in the same place every time, that lets you bypass certain, proscribed later encounters. But you never open a chest to find a suit of scale mail to replace your tatty studded leather. You especially never raid an armory to get a sweet scimitar to replace your shortsword. My longest run was an hour, and at an hour in my character was still doing the same damage with her attacks that she was in those first few chambers. (And all of my characters went through two armories in the first 20 minutes of the game and came away with nothing. That's just cruel. I felt like Milhouse wanting to get to the fireworks factory.)

There are 8 characters to unlock, but they don't seem that differentiated from the 4 default characters and the cost is high. You earn "souls" in combat, that accumulate across characters. In almost three hours, I accumulated 197 souls, which is 3 shy of unlocking the weakest of the unlockable characters. I peeked ahead, and some of the ones that cost 500 or 550 to unlock have some abilities like a weak attack with a stun or a whirling, multi-space attack that leaves enemies hitting at -1 the next turn. But the default characters and most of the first tier of unlocks are just hitting different grid spaces or patterns for slightly different amounts. Given how repetitious the gameplay is, that seems like an extraordinarily high bar for grinding out those better characters.

So I said the first time you play, it feels like a DMed adventure. After that, though, it feels like reading a choose-your-own-adventure book, over and over again. You can make a game like that (cf. To Be Or Not To Be for a good one), but this one has all the trappings (and the price point) of games with some randomization and progression. Not having those leaves it feeling a bit hollow. It's possible that that's all being true to the source material. I never played the pen and paper version. But as a gaming experience, that's where it left me. There is fun to be had, here, but maybe not at the full $20 monty.

In any case, huge thanks to @Orivon for the gift. I did have fun exploring the game, and very much appreciate the gift!

Still enjoying The Witcher 3, though I can only really play it on the weekend. Played a lot today, though, since I was at home. I think I'm just about ready to move to Skellige. Did they really have to name a character Dudu?

I'm constantly amazed by the sound in the game. I wear headphones when I play it, so the sound pops a lot more, but it's really amazing. All of the little sounds that lead to you feeling like you're in a city, or a village, or a cave, or the middle of the woods.

So far I'm doing way more space fights than on the ground and while that's not a bad thing, it certainly doesn't incentivise putting precious skill points into buffing your ground combat abilities. I hope I don't get stomped if they suddenly return.

I think the ship technology goes up to level 5 and at level 2 and I already have so many options in combat it's gonna be kinda nuts to see how more complex it's going to get.
