The Epic Apple fight

ElaroElaro ApologeticRegistered User regular
So.

Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite, wanted special permissions for it on Apple devices so that kids gamers could buy their virtual currency quicker buy their virtual currency quicker, but Apple was all "nah".

So Epic is suing them!

During the battle, rebel spies escaped with the plans to the DEATH STAR (Sorry, bad reflex) court proceedings, which are not over with, Epic had the court reveal, among other things: Valve's 2018-ish? financial reports, some of Microsoft's plan for the future, the facts that Sony really hates cross-play, the secret plan to the DEATH STAR, Nintendo won't work with the Yakuza, and other juicy tidbits.

I hear they're debating the definition of video games on May 4th!

Anyway, please discuss all matters relating to the Big Epic Apple Outdoor Fight, and please post tweets and links to articles, so I can add them to the OP.

I think you're misrepresenting Epic's case a bit there, but I agree with the "let them fight" stance... mostly.

I'm all for the courts putting a door in Apple's walled garden. The lockdown they pull on their devices is ridiculous.

it came out during the trial that Epic was soliciting a special deal between them and Apple. Their whole "crusade for the industry" is horseshit; they're just looking for more money.

If Apple wins, nothing changes except strengthening their control over iOS devices.
If Epic wins, you'll be able to do more with your iDevices without jailbreaking them. Apple's store would have to compete, they'd probably lower their fees and developers would make more money. Maybe that game you liked that didn't quite make the sales it needed would be able to make a sequel now.

More people stand to benefit if Epic wins, even if they don't care about forkknife.

epic is wildly hypocritical in their stance here and tim sweeney just wanted to fish for a judge that doesn't understand technology

    but also? fuck apple

the funniest outcome would be the judge somehow bulldozing the walled garden but also compelling independent entities to offer in app purchases in fortnite

also if tim sweeneys dick fell off and he slipped on it

Oh, I knew it was about money, I just didn't realize they'd actually done that. Though while it looks bad it shouldn't impact their core case (emphasis shouldn't, because...)

since you're here, I wrote a thing about how stupidly secret the games industry is and how the courts weren't prepared for apparently ten or so third-parties descending on them to redact their secrets from evidence:

The judge is currently struggling to get Sweeney to, I guess, define the parameters of what Fortnite is. She just asked him, "How would you define a 'game'?"

The judge startles as enormous spikes begin to emerge from the earth. A deep voice intones, "This message is a warning about danger. The danger is in a particular location... it increases towards a center... the center of danger is here..."

Now that we can finally nail down what a game is next the judge can verify if it is art or not.

So I seriously slept on Willow Smith; It's been a minute since she whipped her hair back and forth.
    Recently she came back in to my music sphere with this one;

And I've listened to it a few times, and can say it's not exactly my speed of music anymore, but I really like the experimentation phase she is in and look forward to seeing where she goes.

She's done a lot to distinguish herself from her father in the last few years and I respect that.

You think there's a chance of them being forced to allow non-appstore app installations on iOS?

Of the people that have installed Android apps not from Google Play, I wonder how many it was just to get Fortnite.

I think part of their challenge is that the warning messages you get for sideloading apps on android is anti-competitive too. Don't know if they'll get any traction with that, but if they prove that Apple's walled garden counts as a monopoly Apple would have to open another method for installing apps(probably as complicated as they can get away with).
