It's time for G&T Secret Santa 2007! omg woooooo

G&T Secret Santa is simple. You join in and you get put on a list. Once I get all the names, I jumble them up and you get assigned someone else from the list at random (your Santee). I tell you who that person is, in secret, and you buy them a present and mail it to them (you are their Santa). What they are getting and who it's from remains a secret until they receive the present.

So, here's how it works:

To join up, send an email to gtsecretsanta@gmail.com with your forum name as the subject (if you're cool you're format it the exact same way it's formatted on the forum.

In the email body include your full mailing address, including your full name, because some places won't deliver mail unless there's a real name with the address. Make sure you include all the information necessary for someone from another country to be able to easily enter your mailing address without having to do any detective work--it's possible your Santa may be from a different country than the one you live in.

Feel free to say "I'm in" in this thread, but remember that unless you send me the email described above, you're not participating.

YOU MUST SEND THIS EMAIL OR YOU WON'T GET PUT ON THE LIST

Also: this year I'm not going to accept anybody whose forum join date is September 1, 2007 or later. Sorry. In the past, people have registered accounts just to get free presents, with no intention of sending a gift themselves. Once again, I'm taking no such chances. If your forum join date is August 30, 2007 or earlier, you're eligible for G&T Secret Santa. (If you didn't make the cut this time, just wait till next year!)

Suggested minimum gift value: $10. This isn't a hard and fast rule, but if you're not willing to give somebody a gift worth at least ten bucks then you honestly shouldn't even be signing up. There's no maximum gift value--if you decide to buy someone an $80 import game, or a $400 game console, that's fine, but keep in mind that you might end up getting a $10 action figure from your Santa.

Make sure gifts are "appropriate". No porn, no racist hate literature, no snuff cinema, nothing like that. If you really think you can't participate without sending someone a doujin manga, then just don't sign up. If you're 100% sure that someone will appreciate you giving them an off-color gift, and 100% sure that nobody else in that person's household will object to the gift in the event it's opened in front of friends or family, then you might be able to take a chance. If there's any doubt, err on the safe side.

Deadlines
November 1: signups for G&T Secret Santa end
December 31: your Santee must receive his or her gift by this date

Don't complain about who you get as a Santee. It may be someone you don't know. If you're not comfortable with taking that chance, don't sign up. It may also be someone who lives in another country, and you may have to pay international shipping to mail your gift to that person. If you're not comfortable with taking that chance, don't sign up. (A note on international gift-giving: if you get assigned a Santee from another country, you may be able to purchase something directly from Amazon or a similar online retailer located in that person's country, to save on shipping. But if you can't, the responsibility to send them a gift still lies with you.) After you get assigned a Santee, you'll have more than a month and a half to try and come up with something that person might like. If you're not comfortable with the thought of having to put some effort into coming up with a good gift for your Santee, don't sign up.

Also also, don't complain about what your Secret Santa gives you. It may be something you don't particularly like. If you're not comfortable with taking that chance, don't sign up.

After all those warnings, everybody should keep in mind that this has been a total blast every year we've done it and I strongly encourage as many people to join in as possible.

The rest of the thread can be used to post such drivel as "omg I'm so in this year" or to give potential Santas an idea what you might like to receive. Personally, I think it's much more fun to just let your Santa give you something random that they think you might like, but if you feel the need to post a wishlist here, go for it.

The first year I was in I got a gentleman in Europe, and my gift to him was returned broken (smashed to bits, really), so I had my santa send him my gift.

The second year I got a lady in Canada, who's gift spent an eternity in Customs Limbo.

I think I might give it a pass this year, out of fear of getting the "You got fucked by the postal service" hat trick.

As noted in the OP, no max value, but recognize that giving excessively is done purely out of the goodness of your heart. The person sending you a gift might be on a far stricter budget.

Honestly, if you get a foreigner, I really think Amazon.local is the way to go. Sure it's not as personal as possible, but it does take 99% of the hastle out of it.

I got some awesome stuff last year too. LightReaper sent me the Phoenix Wright 2 import for G&T SS, and PolaGo sent me an insanely heavy box filled with goodies, including several awesome hardcover collections of the first years of the Superman daily newspaper comic strip.

Pola's box was so heavy that when I signed for it I thought it might be an Xbox. Or two Xboxes.

Last year I sent a bunch of fun books and also Settlers of Catan.

Last year I sent off what I felt would be an appreciated comic for the GV SS, and DS Breakout for G&T. The former only because I did something silly like 'following the rules', as my first thought was a TPB. I'm not gonna make THAT mistake this year! Some fucker's getting something awesome, I'll tell you that!

I received an absolutely hillarious Teen Titans comic (done entirely in the style of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas) for the GV SS, and my G&T SS sent me 2 starter boxes for the WoW CCG and a book.

Combined, they were among my most treasured gifts that year.

This year I'm joining D&D as well. SE++ still scares me, however.

PS: am I the only one refreshing Graphic Violence for their SS post?

My Santa hailed from England last year, and was generous enough to give me some DVDs.

Sadly, the PAL format is not supported here in the NTSC-land of North America.

I didn't have the heart to tell him that his gift was nice but I couldn't use it.

Would it be possible to us to limit our santa/santees to our continent/region-code to account for the shipping and format problems?

    I'm in again this year.

Last year was a lot of fun. I tried to get my Santee something they'd like, and then something that I like that I thought they would enjoy and was something I could share with them. I'm probably going to do the same thing this year.

I know I'm kind of a lurker, but this year I have a Amazon wishlist. I also have a myspace that I never check out. They should give you an idea of what I like, but I would suggest that you don't buy me any games. I have a decent amount of disposable income and one of the things that constantly shifts and changes is my game wish list. I pretty much have all the games that I would enjoy and want. That's it for suggestions. I mean last year I didn't really give any and yet my Santa was able to figure out some awesome gifts to get me... check out the recap:
Stewie Action Figure, Super Mushroom Pillow, and...

No, I don't know what that's supposed to mean. I just like rhyming things.

I did this in '05 and it was AWESOME. I forgot about it in '06 and only remembered ONE DAY PAST the cut-off date. A sad year.

And good news for whomever is drawn for me: I just started a new job with a bitchin' paycheque and the Canuck dollar is soaring. Expect something cool.
