Far Cry 2 is based in virtual Africa, jungles, Savannah, desert and so forth. You are not Jack Carver and there are no mutants, there are many reasons for these changes, I believe the main one being that Far Cry 2 is aimed at setting itself as far from the forthcoming Uwe Boll train-wreck based on the original. Whilst Far Cry 2 still contains plenty of action, it is far more lethal than its predecessor, you're not Rambo.
Caught between two rival factions in war-torn Africa, you are sent to take out "The Jackal", a mysterious character who has rekindled the conflict between the warlords, jeopardizing thousands of lives. In order to fulfill your mission you will have to play the factions against each other, identify and exploit their weaknesses, and neutralize their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning and, of course, brute force.
Features include:
- A realistic weather system, the wind effects all particles, vegetation and fire.
- Fire simulation, start a fire and watch as it spreads, burns down vegetation and blackens the landscape, fire can be used to take out enemy installations as well.
- Plant growth and regeneration, small plants will grow into trees as time progresses and broken branches will grow back in a realistic manner.
- No med packs, the player will have to heal his/her own wounds, whether it be removing a bullet from your arm or stitching up a nasty gash. Each of these actions has it's own unique animation.
- Weapons need maintenance, if you don't look after your weapon, it won't look after you.
- Unique NPCs, enemy and friendly NPCs have a choice of over 50 seperate heads and differing bodies with random skin tones and clothing. This means you won't be running into the same clone every five minutes.
- Day/Night cycles with proper dynamic soft shadowing and god rays.
- Large selection of vehicles (16+) and weapons (50+)
- Enormous game world, 50 square kilometers of sandbox featuring Savannah, jungle and desert.
- Neutral/Friendly NPCs that you can buddy up with. They will treat you according to how you treat them.
The Game Engine
The game engine goes by the name "Dunia Engine." Videos of the engine are available
here. The engine is capable of some amazing feats, including textures detailed right down to a grain of sand, dirt and dust buildup on vehicles and buildings, complex global illumination and wind affecting complex particles. The list goes on, we do know that mod development tools will ship with the game. Sadly not much else is known about the engine at this time, it is likely that Ubisoft will do their usual marketing blitz leading up to the title's release.
The Following are screen shots from Far Cry 2 at differing levels of development, but are all old.
Here are some more.

Then hope no more, because there won't be any of that. It's all humans, baby.
Not often that a game's twist is kept totally secret from me.
But it got old fast.
What.
How long does it take to play this game?
Yeah I was going to upgrade for Crysis, but I played it through once on Delta and I don't see any reason to go back any time soon. The aliens ruined it for me, I knew they were coming but it all just didn't fit. Crytek can't seem to stop this whole "B-Grade" storyline thing.
As for Far Cry 2 it has been confirmed to be all human
Maybe the game takes place over the span of many years?
Looking back at their other games though, story and character is what always fail at
I don't think it'll run on my PC.
Sigh...
edit: does fog occour in africa often? I saw a tech demo, and they wont show off rain, so I am assuming that it dosen't occour in this game, and I can understand that becuase of wet and dry seasons, but fog?
It´s developed by Ubisoft Montreal (you know, Splinter Cell, Assassins Creed, etc.), not by Crytek.
I want to be blinded by the glare off the sand bouncing off my car dammit.
I'm sure I read somewhere that although the engine can do it, it won't be in the game since, y'know, it doesn't actually add anything to the gameplay of an FPS.
Particle-level sand effects?
Realistic weather and fire effects?
Guns that actually jam in sand storms and whatnot?
It sounds like they're trying to create a parallel reality within the confines of every gaming pc/360/PS3.
I don't see this ending well. I'm too afraid my PC will turn into a black hole.
It will devour your social life, or whatever it is that black holes do.
If they want to distance themselves from Uwe Boll's FarCry, why the fuck did they give him the rights to make the movie?

Mad dollaz?
Because that's not the real reason.
In polling players of the first game when trying to decide what to do with the sequel, Ubisoft learned that people didn't find Jack Carver a very memorable character and didn't seem to find the idea of having him replaced a big deal or a bad thing.
So they decided to go with a roster of several selectable characters.
No, I mean I am terrified that trying to recreate reality in such a frail machine will cause a real time-space anomaly and end existence as we know it.
At which point we will all be reborn as transgendered paul newmans.
So now we have several selectable and forgettable characters? Woo....
I never asked for this!
Despite the fact that if you say Uwe Boll's name to a gamer they will create a string of obscenities relating to his mothers goat some companies actually think we want to see these fucking shitpile movies.
But no mutants or aliens to fight! I really like the direction that Ubisoft is going. New location, no more fucking tri-gens. What is with Crytek with ruining the experience by making the second half of their games linear with monsters? Fighting humans in big environments has always been the funnest parts of the game, and I'm glad that's what Ubisoft is focusing on.
Exactly.
I mean, seriously, how many people even know the main character from Far Cry's name?
He's always been "The guy in the Hawaiian shirt who shoots people".
newman?

Isn't it on the same engine??
I never asked for this!
And designed to run on 360/PS3 too.
